as many of you put together your summer reading list, might i recommend that you add a book or two by bertrand russell? here are a few selected quotes from him that will give you a flavor of his thinking and writing.

the 6th one down is perhaps my favorite of all of them all. number 8 is pretty good too.

warning: if you like your thinking done for you and your opinions spoon-fed into your skull, stop reading right now.

----------------------------------------------

A stupid man's report of what a clever man says can never be accurate, because he unconsciously translates what he hears into something he can understand.
Bertrand Russell

In all affairs it's a healthy thing now and then to hang a question mark on the things you have long taken for granted.
Bertrand Russell

Our great democracies still tend to think that a stupid man is more likely to be honest than a clever man.
Bertrand Russell

Passive acceptance of the teacher's wisdom is easy to most boys and girls. It involves no effort of independent thought, and seems rational because the teacher knows more than his pupils; it is moreover the way to win the favour of the teacher unless he is a very exceptional man. Yet the habit of passive acceptance is a disastrous one in later life. It causes man to seek and to accept a leader, and to accept as a leader whoever is established in that position.
Bertrand Russell

So far as I can remember, there is not one word in the Gospels in praise of intelligence.
Bertrand Russell

The time you enjoy wasting is not wasted time.
Bertrand Russell

The people who are regarded as moral luminaries are those who forego ordinary pleasures themselves and find compensation in interfering with the pleasures of others.
Bertrand Russell

The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts.
Bertrand Russell

There is no nonsense so errant that it cannot be made the creed of the vast majority by adequate governmental action.
Bertrand Russell

One should as a rule respect public opinion in so far as is necessary to avoid starvation and to keep out of prison, but anything that goes beyond this is voluntary submission to an unnecessary tyranny, and is likely to interfere with happiness in all kinds of ways.
Bertrand Russell, Conquest of Happiness (1930) ch. 9

The fact that an opinion has been widely held is no evidence whatever that it is not utterly absurd; indeed in view of the silliness of the majority of mankind, a widespread belief is more likely to be foolish than sensible.
Bertrand Russell, Marriage and Morals (1929) ch. 5

I would have to say that this is one of my favorite quotes, too.

A lot of my work life involves time. Production Timetables. Deadlines. Man-days. Dollars/hour.

Each year, I make a valiant effort to completely "waste" at least one day of time. I've laid out in Tuolumne Meadows in Yosemite, staring at the sky. Read motorcycle magazines all day while laying in a hammock at Turkey Toms. Spent the entire day floating in a raft out in Lake Tahoe. Watched the shepherds work their flock in The Yorkshire Dales.

etc.... :D

Thanks for the advice, lee.

Passive acceptance of the teacher's wisdom . . . .

Lee,

It's rare that one of your posts doesn't give me something to think about. Thanks for this cool list. I took a course on The Essay, but Russell didn't figure too prominently. I'll have to revisit some of his work.

I posted the quote above outside my (teacher's) office. You have no idea how apt it is for my department, or--in my opinion--for our larger society.

Thanks. :type

I'm extraordinarly busy most of the time, but I like to "waste" at least a day a month.

In my life, with email, phones of all varieties, instant messaging and the like, I don't often enough have a chance to sit and reflect on what's going on in my life. A day of "doing nothing" often gives me a chance to gain some perspective on the activities that comprise my day.

actually the rejection by some of that which is commonly accepted merely makes me want to accept it all the more, unless of course i disagree or something in which case i accept (i.e. embrace) the rejection as if it were my own.

only once, and they were the only ones there. rumor has it that bertrand inquired, "the title of one of your films was 'man-proof.' i've pondered that as a potential title to some of my books. i have a notion that the most beautiful ideals of existence are beyond the grasp of most humans, and as such are man-proof. it's also a back-handed compliment to the existentialists, which i never pass up the opportunity to deliver." she reportedly replied, "you're dorky and talk fancy. i like that. let's shag."
