An incredible man.
Rest in Peace, indeed.

What a sad passing. A true loss of a great man and hero.
The Army's answer to Chesty Puller. Enough said. Where will we find more such as he.

Though he and I didn't see eye to eye on many things we exchanged emails and I answered a few questions that he had about security. It was interesting that here was a hero that answered his own email and offered to call me to verify it was him.
I really think he was an old style class act when I dealt with him. I won't be getting anymore emails I guess.

Did you have to ask that question? I think we may have (sadly) ran out. I hope not. Den

Hero's....
They aren't born to it.
They aren't made to it.
They aren't raised, cajoled, or trained to it.
A hero is an average man in a position where failure may be inevitable, but perserverance and tenancity win over the forces of failure. Likely many won't survive that test, but then again where will our next geneartion of heros be tested?

A great American hero. His website says his memorial is scheduled for less than 30 minutes. It could have lasted for days! I treasure my autographed copy of the Vietnam Primer. Authored by the man who should have been General but instead quit and moved to the outback. That's how America used to treat their heros.

"Moved to the outback?" Hey, that's my old neighborhood you're libeling. Hackworth contributed a lot while he was in Montana, like getting involved in the Freemen situation, gotta hand him credit, when he lived in Whitefish he didn't just sit back and count the trees.

No libel - I think he moved to Aussy in the 70's

That's not exactly isolating yourself, either. I visited Alice Springs in the mid-1980s and everyone kept warning us how "outback" it was. Hell, they had a Kmart! Whitefish had about 3,000 residents at that time, including Hackworth.
