Lawrance of Arabia. The movie opens with the kick start of a JAP engine on a Brough Superior. The scenery is great, the sound track gives one goose bumps and the film won about 10 oscars. It's sorta weak on the small screen, but epic on a big screen with surround dolby. It is also true. :thumb

I *really* enjoyed The Motorcycle Diaries (here's a paraphrase):
Couple: Are you looking for work?
Ernesto: No.
Couple: Then why do you travel?
Ernesto: We travel to be traveling.
The Blob (here's a paraphrase):
Steve McQueen: How do you get people to protect themselves from something they don't believe exists?

Jeebus, dude. When was the last time you went to a movie? :ha
The last time we went to the theater was to see Passion of The Christ. Very good film with an extremly well behaved audiance.
I can't remember how long it's been before that, I only know that the people in the shows around here will converse on the cell phone and with each other during the show at a high enough volume level to be heard above the movie. and thry will not stop. So, after the 4th cell call the man received I just went to the off-duty cop who worked security there and told him there was a man with something in his hand that might be an auto-feed pistol and he was waving it around. End of problem.
The cop received a round of applause when he took the guy outside! We just rent DVD's now and don't bother with the walk-ins.
That wasen't my TOP 10, just 10 of my favorites.

i'm a netflix worshipper, err, customer. if you dont have it, get it, and check out some of the ones you havent heard of. a lot of them are more "films" than "movies" and have plots and good acting and that sort of thing. i also really like dopey films with explosions, great special effects, and all that. but these are movies that i think were great. i define a good movie as one where i forget i'm watching a movie, and a great movie is a good one that causes me to think really hard about something, evokes a strong emotional response (i dont cry, but i get dust in my eye sometimes) or i want to see over and over.
one i left off was office space. i was rushed to put cover sheets on my TPS reports, so i forgot to list it!
cliffy - you had excellent picks as well. i'm going to need to check some of those out! ;)

i go to movies and experience similar frustrations as you and the princes do. for purposes of this post, consider me a devout christian who wakes up every day trying to embody the spirit of christian teachings in my every day activities.
next time someone bugs you at the movie:
1. try to love thy neighbor. you must learn to forgive those trespasses against you, my friend. would jesus run and lie to the security guard, or would he have a kind word for the man using the phone? try showing this man some love and compassion, and see if he can take his calls outside the theater, or turn off his telephone.
2. do not bear false witness! that's a big sin! if the guy is talking on the phone, and disturbing you, i think it is wrong to tell the security folks that you think he might have a gun! if you can't do #1 above, at the very least you must be truthful when speaking to the authorities.
thanks!

Interesting, since it was filmed in Dallas. The opening scene was done on I-635 if I remember correctly. I once worked in one of the buildings in the background in one shot. BTW I think my company's office is in the office park that was used for all the exteriour shots. It looks *SO* dead-on. I'll have to watch again and nail down some landmarks so I can test this theory.
Brad, the red Swingline is now available. It was actually not produced before the film (they painted one that was originally another colour), but there was enough demand to see it get produced.

I was just looking over my little list and noticed that 3 out of my 4 favorite John Wayne movies co-star Maureen O'Harra... Maybe I'm not so much a John Wayne fan as I am a Maureen O'Harra fan??? I'd certainly rate her near the top of the list for all time "Hollywood Hotties". Another old time star that was so stunningly attractive that it nearly boggles the mind was Grace Kelly..

The original Ghostbusters just cracks me up. Especially the scene on top of the building when they are getting their butts kicks and they are asked if they are a god. With a no answer and more butt kicking the retort is: "If anyone asks you if you are a god, say YES!" :)

"Them" had giant ants
"The Tingler" was a fun Vincent Price film with a giant rubber centipede
"The Blob" with Steve Mcqueen had a very catchy title song and a reverse drag race
"Plan 9 from Outer Space" is beyond schmaltzie
Other really bad films would include any film where women are jailed, Moonshine running films, and old hot rod films. The king of the hot rod film is "Hot Rods from Hell" (or was it "Palm Springs Weekend?) with Robert Conrad, Tuesday Weld and Tab Hunter.
The reigning champion of recent bad films is "Show Girls" It is so bad that it goes beyond bad to funny then beyond funny back to just plain bad. :lurk

Speaking of Midnight Cowboy. Saw it in 1969 in Chicago, thought it was sad. Told The Princess about it when we met in 1974, she had been too young for an "X" rated in 1969, so we had to wait for the late night showing at the Ultra-vision for her to see it. Said she thought it was one of the BEST movies she had ever seen! Told me about all these underlyig meanings and "chick-flick" stuff. whoever thought Midnight Cowboy was a "CF"?
After that I made her watch "The Wild Bunch" with William Holden, no "CF" there.

Oz, m'man. . .Brando in a Western, eh? Not bad, not bad. (Slim Pickens in that one as well.) How 'bout 'The Missouri Breaks' from '76 with Brando and Jack Nicholson in starring roles. My list of Westerns (above) should've included 'Once Upon a Time In The West' with Bronson/Fonda/Robards/Jack Elam/Woody Strode and that magnificent chunk of Italian womanhood, Claudia Cardinale. The 2-DVD Special Collector's Edition is a whole evening's entertainment with excellent interviews with surviving cast and crew members. The producers even went back to Monument Valley, Arizona (John Wayne Country!) to reminisce at the exact same locations where some of the movie exteriors were shot in 1968. Wonderful stuff! I didn't know until I got this 2-DVD set that most of the film was actually shot in SPAIN and ITALY.
Ahhh, MOVIES! ` ` ` :thumb

Many of the movies that I like have been mentioned.
I would like to add:
The Limey
Sliding doors
Memento
and about 25 foreign films that I do not have the time to list.
I do not mean to hijack this thread, but related to this (entertainment) is the BBC Mystery Series on cable. I am a British movie and mystery junky. My wife teaches Spanish, so we see alot of Spanish films, and French films, and Asian films, and .....
btw, my wife is Cuban, and she has some unusual opinions about "The Motorcycle Diaries". Che G. is not one of her favorite people.
Referring to a previous post, how did they get that Jap engine on Lawrenc's bike? (also one of my favorite movies).

When I was at college, the university would rent movies and send them around to the meeting rooms in the dorms. Every week a different movie made the rounds.
Three years running, the flick for the week before Easter was Life of Brian. Someone had a sense of humor....
Good stuff in the posts. Glad to see that someone mentioned Buckaroo Banzai , even if it wound up in the "so bad it's good" list. Definitely one of my all-time faves.

1. "The Party" w peter sellers. hard to find, but the first 5 minutes will make you
laff so hard you'll pee
2. "My Favorite Year" Several great perfs,and some great lines;
''What are those? His drinking socks?" ..but Lani Kazan and Lou Jacobi
are genius
3. "The Iron Giant" a terriffic animated feature that Warner's stupidly tried to bury
4. "The Sting" I'll watch those two guys and Bob Shaw anytime (It
would've been "BC and The SdK", except for the "Raindrops Keep..." number)
5. "Syriana" the gub'mint scares the crap out of me
6. "Waiting For Guffman" too close for comfort
7. "Singin' in the Rain" Best movie musical ever
8. "It's A Wonderful Life" ..."You want the moon, Mary?"
9. "Star Wars" but ONLY the first time I saw it
10. "Alien" I think it's a chick flick. I can't believe she went back for the effing cat!
I don't think even Steve McQueen would've gone back for the cat!
and one for free: "The Babe" w John Goodman... the father of the dying boy for whom the Bambino hits two is brilliant!
