undefinedMy 96 RT will shut down instantly! No missing, no staggering, the dash lights stay on. It happens in the first hour of riding. It will sometimes start by popping the clutch (if I am still moving). Sometimes I have to sit by the side of the road for as much as 15 minutes and then it will start. I have replaced the Hall sensor and have by- passed the side stand switch to no avail. My Ace mechanic is also stumped. Any ideas anyone?

Coil pack? Is it weather dependent?

Not weather dependent. The wrench (a good one) is checking that and all other switches and contacts - he even had the BMW rep. check it out. As you well know these type of problems never show up for the wrench!

Flash412 has a voodoo doll of a 96RT and he has been sticking a pin in it off and on. If you ask him nicely, he will stop doing it.

I'm thinking Hall Effect Sensors are beginning to fail.

My opinion is that it is a failing shutoff switch some place - as far as I know hall effect sputters before failing and tends to go in wet conditions. Check the kill and side stand switchs ...

Ditto on the kill switch. I had an 89 Pacific Coast that started to have the same problem. It would just die, often as I began to accelerate from a stop. Turns out that there was corrosion inside the switch. I got some contact cleaner and sprayed into the switch (careful not to get it all over the plastic or the paint), rocked aabout 20-30 times and it solved the problem.

I'd try this out first if you haven't already.
