I'm a K-Whiner from way back , know nothing about these airheads but am looking for a project. This machine has a new front fender and 21,000 miles but otherwise is as pictured. Can someone tell me what model 83 R80 this is and what a fair price would be on it. It runs great but cosmetically is in need of much TLC.

Is this a model worth preserving?

Thanks,

Terry

Wow Terry,
That looks like a really cool project! It's an R80 if it has 800cc jugs. You can verify this by running the VIN through several different online references (I do not know the URLS for them). As for what sub-model of R80 it is, I'd hazard a guess that it began like as an RS. The fairing however is not a BMW item, but something added by a previous owner. The front fender of course is NOT in the stock configuration and you may want to do something about that. I'd also like a closer look at that logo on the tank.
If you are new to Airheads, some excellent sources of info are the Airheads Beemer Club and Boxerworks.com, both of which have great forums full of helpful and knowledgable folks. Do a Google on Snowbum too- his tech articles are priceless.

Then it probably started its life as an R80RT, and got the aftermarket fairing sometime during its life. Is that a Hannigan fairing? I dunno, someone here probably does. It's got those funky low bars as well. Do they hit the tank?

Is it worth preserving? Depends on how much someone wants to sell it for. If it does already seem to run good, and the work required is mostly cosmetic, then I'd say no more than $2K. I'd probably offer the person selling it $1500, but I'm a sucker for bikes like that. Change all fluids, lube the splines, and paint that sucker bright glossy red, maybe add some gold pinstripes.

Good Luck!

I'm going to take a look at it tomorrow. After talking with the seller further, it did start as an R80 RT and someone added the Rickman Fairing. He also has the RT Fairings to go with it.

Thanks for the feedback, I agree, as long as it is mechanically ok, it would be a nice project and I always wanted a cafe.

Now to get it into the garage without the wife noticing. :brow

As a 1983 R80RT owner I agree that it is worth no more than $1500. If it was original it would be worth a lot more.
