I just checked and found I need to add a little oil to my 1997 650. Dumb question: do I use standard 5w30 or 10w30 engine oil?
Thanks
Use 20 w 50, :thumb the lighter oils would be ok for very cold temps.

I had this discussion with the local dealers parts guy. BMW recommends the lighter weight 10wXX oils because it causes less "jump" when you put the bike in first from neutral. Obviously the clutch is in oil, and I suppose the lighter weight oil allows for a little less drag, however I've been running 20w50 in my wifes F650GS for a while, and she didn't notice a thing when I changed it.

Here is what my local BMW-dealer recommand for my 2002 Scarver:
''Castrol GPS SAE 15w-50, synthetic.''
After 10 000 kilometres the clutch did not release easy, so the dealer say I better change oil after 7 000 kilometres.
