My 1100GS came with Distanzia's last year, got about 10K. Replaced with Tourances, about 8K on them so far and lots of tread left. I'm runing 30psi front and rear. I've also got another set of Tourances in the basement for when these are finished. I did use the Pirelli MT90's on my Cagiva 900 Elefant, and I liked them, but the sizes were not available for the GS.

Tourances last long. Anakees stick well on pavement but have a 7-8000 mile life.
Bridgestone TW's good on pavement buy not offroad.

I had Pirelli Scorpians on mine 95 GS when I bought it and didn't much care for them. Not very good in dirt / gravel.
Changed to Tourances and have had very good results. Have had over 10K on a couple of set, one close to 12K and run rear at 34 and front at 32.
I buy through MAW, http://www.accwhse.com/

The basic summation of the three most recommended tires for the GS:
Metzeler Tourance: Good solid all 'round tire. Good mileage. Decent 'stick' and handling. Not great off pavement. Some report as high as 13,000 miles from a rear tire. I've been seeing closer to 9,000 miles, but the mileage depends greatly on where and how you ride.
Michelin Anakee: Somewhat better than the Tourance in every way, except mileage is down 25%.
Continental TKC 80s: By far the best off pavement. These are as close to an offroad tire as you'll find for the big GS. Street manners suffer accordingly, but they perform admirably for something with knobs.
For more GS riders that I know of, it's a question of Tourance vs. Anakee. Compare prices and consider how many miles you ride per year. FWIW, I use Tourances.
As to where to get them, look locally first. For example, there's a shop in my area that gets both excellent prices - both on the tires and mounting them (they handle some of the police RTs). Where are you? maybe someone knows of a place in your neck of the woods. If that isn't an option...

Ive tried them all over the years, I now stick to Metzler. One BUT, they are not very good in the mud,

I consistantly get over 20K miles from Metzler Tourance on the rear. I usually change the front about 15K due to cupping. They stick good enough to drag my boots with no drama.

Been running the metzler tourance for over 26,000 miles now. Mostly with full Jesse bags, tankbag, panniers, and a bag on the back rack, and yes with my wife on the back seat. 90% asphalt and the rest on dirt shortcuts and backroads, (camping, etc.) I've been getting over 12,000 miles wear on these. I've been able to replace these for half price every 2 years, but I still think that they're a great tire. Let us know if you find something worth reporting.
Long live the greatest (yet topheavy) bike ever.
Stay safe ya'll

Yea, yea this is a late response but I've been busy getting a new computer and missed a lot while I've been gone.
Hey Pirelli Scorpians are back this year in a BIG way with a new MT90ST radial just for the GS and Aprilla. I bought and waited two-months for them to make them; they are that new. So far I'm very happy with performace, wear and wet grip. They have a meatier block tread pattern over the Tourance, should wear longer, and are slightly better off road. Take a fresh look...
I got 18K before I ditched the OEM Metzlers and went with Michelin Anakee's.
I won't buy the Anakee's again, worn out in under 12K and they (rear tire) wears the edge block in a way that makes the tire feel flat/squirrelly in corners at slow speed. Very uncomfortable feeling. Maybe I flogged it too hard in the twisties, but rode it just like the Metzlers.
If I couldn't find the new Pirelli's in the future, I'd buy the Metzlers again.
Hope this isn't too late, or starts a new thread.

I'll second that. I've had great luck with SWMoto.

Not my experience at all. I've bought from them 5 times and they've always had tires on my doorstep in two days. The ONE time they didn't (4 days), I called and complained because the front Anakee was 4 months old and Blaine told me they were back-ordered and that was the reason for the delay. He had to scour the country for a front, bought one from PU and had THEM drop ship it to me. All of which he explained in an email that I received in less than 24 hours along with an offer to take the tires back if I wasn't 100% satisfied.
Great folks in my book.

I have run a couple sets of Tourances and am considering the new Scorpion but am concerned about the soft compound and short wear life.? Is there any evidence that the new S/T is really better than it was?
