I was putting the oil filter cover back on my wife's 87 K75. Screwing in the first of the 3 Allens.

Then I did it. I thought "just a little bit more" and then....(THE DREADED SOUND)

*tink* :cry

I know the old saying "Tighten it until it breaks and then back it off a bit :stick

So I removed the oil pan and I'm thinking just to be on the safe side I'll take the pan up to the BMW dealer and have them extract the remains.

I'm sure that I'm not the first idiot to do this and I want to get 3 new screws right away.

Anyone else pull this move?

I broke mine about a year ago but was able to remove it after taking the oil pan cover off where I could see the broke bolt. I don't remember having any trouble getting it out or how I did it. I seem to remember that it took a couple of minutes to remove after taking the oil pan cover off.

I took the pan to a machine shop and they were able to back out the broke stud.

Moral of the story: There's a reason your tool kit has allen wrenches that are short: Too much torque simply isn't needed. :D
