It suddenly dawned on me what is missing!! Chat!! This site needs an online chat! anyone with me on this?

Back in the olden days, there were no smileys. Just stuff like ;-). a 14 modem was hot stuff.

Geoff -- we had a chatroom on this site from 1999 - 2002 (or 3...). Ted Verrill installed it.

It was a freeware product... a java applet. Pretty much the standard stuff you talk about above.

The airheads used to get on every Wednesday night and shoot the sh**.

Other than that, it didn't gain widespread acceptance.

I tried it once as part of my volunteer work for the 2001 Rally. It was, um, outside the skillset of most of the rally chairs at the time.

I'm guessing that the evolving broadband IP network might bring us a resurgence in this technology.
