My favorite one from where I work is PEBCAK.

I work in IT, and when we've eliminated all possibility of the problem being in the computers, and it works fine for everyone but the person involved, even at their workstation, the diagnosis is PEBCAK.

Problem Exists Between Chair And Keyboard.

When I was a two-way radio technician in the army we had favourites like OHS- Operator Head Space, and ESO- Equipment Smarter than Operator. In my current job we pretty much set our own hours and work without the supervision of our coprorate parent, who are for the most part unaware of what we do, when we do it and where we are most of the time. One guy we used to have on our team described certain days as 'PFNW' days- Paid For Not Working. He said that that was the code they used when he worked for the railroad to justify slack time on timesheets.

Heh.. We used head-space and timing as a reference in the Marines, too. (Originally in reference to how you had to set a M-2 .50 cal to fire, but worked just fine for anything/anyone else too.)
If you're prior service you know all the obvious ones then.. SNAFU, TARFU, FUBAR, REMF, etc..etc...

Ownership of these brands made me run across these 2:
CHEVROLET - Can Hear Every Valve Rattle On Long Extended Trips
DODGE - Drips Oil, Drops Grease, Everywhere

MICROSOFT: Most Intelligent Customers Realize Our Software Only Fools Teenagers
IBM: I Blame Microsoft

MSU - process used to arrive at an answer. How did you arrive at those figures? Oh, I used MSU (Make Sh*t Up).

RCH - unit of measure, most of those that have worked in electronics know what this level of adjustment is. Just tweak it one RCH, and we're there! Not going to explain it, this is a family board.

We use SWAG here as well, the "guess" definition, that is.

At work one of my sister companies has a Frequency Dividing System series of products, they call them the FDS series. They happen to be based in England, so they are no familiar with the femine product by the same name. So that was an interesting call with them about the naming on the US brochures.

In addition to the femine product it also has another meaning at work "F Dat Sh*t"

Then there is POS, that also means point of sale, but I had to explain to a coworker how the new marketing programming should not be called POS Signage Program.

When I managed advertising for a satellite and cable communications equipment maker, I used to marvel at the technology and how well it worked. We had a video encryption system, a cool acronym in and of itself: B-MAC for the B version of Mulitplexed Analog Component video transmission format.

When I asked the guy how it worked, he said "FM."

****ing Magic.

Very similiar to our more friendly format of AM

"Amazing Magic"

What is funny is there is a one page document at the office of "company TLA" Three Letter Acronyms, my personal favorite is a BOM (pronounced bomb) Bill of Materials.

In the telecom business, there is an acronym called BOM/BOT.

It is used to describe how professional services organization create and manage infrastructure or applications. Build, operate and manage/Build, owner turnkey.

I have vanity plates on my main cage that say "FM". When asked about what that means, I explain I'm a computer guy and those letters stand for what makes computers work, and what makes them not work. When they work, i's "****ing Magic." When they don't, its "****ing Microsoft." Always gets a big laugh.

yeah I know what you mean.
SWAG in my line of work means "Scientific Wild Ass Guess."

I would dare say that most if not all of the acronyms listed (other than microsoft referals) originated in the military.
When I was an IC tech with a job code for telephones and I guessed at something about phones it was a SWAG. If the guess was made by an EM (electrician mate) it was simply a Wild Ass Guess. No science involved what so ever.

One we use in the aviation business is funny because USUALLY we're so anally accurate about numbers, speeds, and distances.

HOWEVER... sometimes you just have to say: T.L.A.R.

That Looks About Right

A couple of my favorites from the system administration world:

BOFH: Bastard Operator From Hell. (This means basically, a guy who's really good at systems with a vicious mean streak. Don't mess with a BOFH.)

LART: Luser (user) Attitude Readjustmant Tool. (Something a BOFH uses when a luser gets on his (or her) nerves. Usually blunt and heavy.)

If you find someone that has called for an obvious problem they should have fixed, or find nothing wrong but technique, we will write DFO. The last word being operator. I will end up in a technical sentence, and is normally not detected by those who sign workorders.

We use that a lot in the oilfield, only it's a BFH. Quite the tool, it's called on quite a little!

"Give it a tap with the BFH, that'll fix anything".

I work for the FAA in ATC I know lots of acronyms.
Like PWC "Professional Women Controllers. COBC "Collation of Black Controllers" COHC "Collation of Hispanic Controllers" Well before 9/11 we would sometime give tours of our facility to pilots that would visit us. Some controllers gave very detailed tours, like you know how many cieling tiles we have and such. We considered these people as "milking the tour" to avoid work. We also use operating intials around here. So when a controller whose intials were MC milked a tour some one drew a cow with headset and labeled it COWMC (pronounced COW MUCK) this was displayed in a prominent place someone asked me if I knew what COWMC stood for I couldn't resist "Yes I know it's Coalation of White Male Controllers. Eventually this took off and was severely dealt with by management. "I don't ever want to hear COW MUCK mentioned again."

I work at OLU AFSS in Ne.
