View Full Version : Need Help - Right Side Turn Signal

Don't laugh - I took my RT to a track day at Firebird Raceway today. It is an 04. I removed the mirrors from the fairing, stuffed the wires back in to the fairing, and taped them over. When I was done on the track I reconnected the left and right mirrors - the left turn signal worked, but the right did not - all three bulbs on the right side - the indicator bulb in the dash, the right front and rear turn sigs are all inop. The left side works fine. I asked a BMW mechanic at the track to look at it and he suspects that the two ends of the right turn connectors came into contact with each other while disconnected from the light and that shorted out the relay. I am supposed to leave on a long trip tomorrow and would appreciate any help. The right front bulb is fine - I will check the rear and the indicator bulbs but other than that I suspect it is a relay and I can't fix that without a replacement.
Thanks.

But there's only one turn signal relay: if the left side turn signals work OK, then the relay's good.
I think the RF bulb's wonky, or one of the connections you removed and replaced didn't re-connect properly.

Hi All - problem fixed - in my troubleshooting I replaced my Kisan Signalminder SM-5 module with the stock Delphi module and now everything works fine. I will follow up with Kisan and let you know what they have to say. Thanks!

Bob,
Glad you got that fixed.
What's your feeling about taking your RT on the track? I've done it a couple of times and decided to get a second bike just for the track. I couldn't bare the thought of low siding an RT and watching all that Tupperware go sliding accross the track. I also found with the high RPM's all day, that it seemed to use more oil plus running the tires at lower pressure probably accelerated the wear for the short amount of miles.
There's been some LT's on the track as well, but it could make for an expensive hobby.

Here's the replacement for my future track days. He's less than a third of the price of the RT and certainly a high fun factor. The rear seat is gone since this photo and he's getting ready to have the rear fender removed soon.

Hey Randy -
It would never have occurred to me to take my RT to the track, as that is what I use my Ducati SuperSport for almost exclusiely. This past weekend my son was in town and I had a free trackday from a promotion, so I put my son on the Ducati and took the RT out rather than ride one of those trashed rental sport bikes. I have a fairly new set of Z-6's on the RT and I just wanted to get a feel for taking the braking and suspension up close to the limits. To be honest with you, I did it once on the RT and that is enough. I would recommend that any so-inclined RT owner give it a go but it is really to find out more about the bike and is certainly not an exercise in which you will hone your technical (ie track) riding skills. There was one guy there on a fairly new ST4 and he smoked me in to the turn at the end of the main straightaway - I think between his bike being lighter and him looking pretty light, he had a much shorter braking zone. You are right about buring oil, at the end of the day the sight glass was empty. In terms of wear on the tires, I usually don't spend too much time leaned over at 40-45 degrees on the RT, so my tires got some wear in unusual areas! I started out slow to warm them up and prevent unusual sidewall stresses and pressures.
I agree that the thought of that beautiful bike sliding through the kitty litter was sufficiently horrifying as to induce some very conservative track riding - I was not going to even come close to getting it out from under me!
In a nutshell - nice thing to have done once, but the track is for sportbikes, IMHO.
