I ride an '03 R1150R and have the sport screen. I'm satisfied with the blast it normally keeps off my chest at highway speeds. However, when riding into gusty winds I still get the crap beat out of me at 70+ mph. So, I'm considering getting the BMW Touring screen for long trips. BTW, I'm 6'0" with normal inseam, etc...

My questions:

1. Is it true that the mounting systems for the sport and touring screens are identical so that all one has to do is unscrew, remove one, replace with the other, re-screw, and you're done? Convenience is a big deal to me.

2. Anybody have experience with touring screen particularly relating it to the sport screen?

Any other thoughts, please fire away. And I know this can be an emotional topic, but I sure don't mean it that way! :D

Interesting - I have a 50R with the touring screen and was wondering how the sport screen might do. Am also 6'0", 32" inseam. Very still air from waist to about top of face shield, but very noisy. Was thinking that maybe the shorter sport version might fix that problem.
Tonight is coffee gathering at Shoemaker/Hardt in Plano (2709 W 15th St) about 7:30. If you can come, we can compare. If you can't come, pm me and we can meet another time to put the bikes next to each other. Maybe we can both learn something here.
By the way, there is a fellow constantly telling us that the problem is not the screen, but the oil coolers, and that an Aeroflow lower will fix the noise problem. Not quite ready to pop another $200 just to find out, and they do look pretty funny, but that just might be the answer to noise.

I also ride a 50R with a sports screen. At 5'8" i can tuck behind the screen at 80+ and suffer little discomfort.I will be at the local dealer tomorrow and will check if it can be a straight swap between the two screens.

I have no personal experience. I know that the subject has been covered at various times on r1150r.net web site.

I've got an 02 1150r w/touring screen that I'm quite happy with..the only "issues" I've had are w/the mounting bolts that went up into the triple tree kept loosening, even w/loc-tite..sooo after puting in 10mm longer bolts nomore loosening "issues"...geting the longer bolts in was a little more involved than a simple swap because of clearance problems, but once the inst. cluster was loosened everything went smoothly...as far as noise goes ..35yrs of work around vehicles has left me w/tinitis and I don't notice any exessive noise...what,huh ,hello,oh its the phone ringing ,well ya don't hafta yell!!!! :doh

I put a Laminar Lip (www.laminarlip.com) on the BMW touring screen on my R1150R and I think it helped a little. It directs the wind coming over the top of the screen almost off the top of my helmet. I know this is true because I get fewer bugs on my helmet visor. I'm 5'7".

However, I have to agree with the guy who says it's the oil coolers. The coolers funnel the wind straight over the top of the tank and onto the rider. While you are riding at a high speed, place one hand into the air flow coming over one of the coolers and follow it up to where it hits you. Now do that with the wind coming over a BMW touring shield; there isn't as much wind there.

The best solution to the noise is a good set of earplugs or a faired bike (but we don't need no steeking faired bikes!).

Last Saturday I bought the Sport screen thinking I can extend my riding season by eliminating getting beat up by the wind. I was wrong. The noise was horrible and the wind, although reduced, was still pretty bad. I'm 6'0". I spoke to the dealer and he was willing to exchange the sport screen for the touring screen. The mounting hardware is the same. So on Thursday, I installed the Touring screen. It gave me a little more wind protection but the wind noise was still horrible. One thing different is that at highway speeds, it feels like someone is hitting you in the head with a mallet. I don't know if there is an acceptable solution for this bike. I'm debating on whether to return this screen as well. If anyone has a solution, other than buying a different bike, please let me know.

Call Cee Bailey and tell them your height, bike and what you hope to accomplish. They have many different heights and widths. Just because 2 sizes don't fit all.

Thanks Mark,
I'll talk to Cliff's BMW in danbury later today. They deal with Cee Baileys. But I'm starting to think that the bike was never meant to be a touring bike. It's a naked roadster and I should lave it like that. o you have a windscreen on your R1000R?

I got a S style fairing that takes pressure off my chest but leaves my neck and helmet in the wind. Works for me! Is your R a silver 2004? LUST!

The Bike is Red. Just talked with Cliff's BMW. They were nice enough to take back the shield. I must be very sensitive to wind noise. I would gladly trade off having the wind pressure spread across my head and chest rather than having the pressure concentrated on my head.

I'm 5' 11' on a 2002 R1150R with the touring screen, and it works fine for me. You'll always get some noise with a screen you're looking over, but I find the touring screen to provide relatively little buffeting -- far, far less than the stock screen on my former R1100R. Still use earplugs for speed/distance.

But I'm starting to think that the bike was never meant to be a touring bike.

My R1150R is a wonderful touring bike. In fact, my K75 has been relegated to a commuter bike except that I usually take it to the Falling Leaf Rally. I always take the R on trips of any length. I have a touring windscreen with an attached Laminar Lip (see my post above), and I'm 5'7".

i think it's a great touring bike, you just get some wind is all. plenty of motor, easy to load/pack, decent fuel range - this adds up to happiness for me.

i use my r1150r for all my long trips.

i think it's about expectations. lots of people seem surprised at the amount of wind/weather they can feel on a nekkid bike. i am pleased by it. i've also found that when i first rode mine, it seemed like a lot of air and force was hitting me. as i rode more and more, my muscles adapted, and unless i'm in a gnarly wake of a big truck, or a heinous crosswind, i don't even notice the wind.

it sounds to me like you're getting ready to rationalize the purchase of another bike. :thumb

No new bikes for me for a while. Still paying off college for 3 kids!! However, I returned the touring windshield to the dealer. I was delighted to ride home without one. The 1150R is just a fun bike. Having a windshield on, for me anyhow, took the fun out of it. I like the wind spread evenly accross my torso. I also noticed the bike is more nimble without the windshield. So I'm back to not wanting to put this bike away for winter!

Wow! I see my thread of so long ago has been revived! Let me update it. Shortly after I started this thread I bought a touring screen. It has eliminated almost all of the dirty air/buffeting I got with the sports screen. I now get the occasional dirty air, but only at high speeds into high winds coming at me and at an angle, and then its not that bad. Its a heckuva nice improvement over the sports screen. I still get plenty of clean air, though, which I like. It works very well.
