I realize that I am almost perfect in every way but that slight bit of imperfection that I have, manifests itself in my lack of attention to turn off the BMW turn signals.
Now for those of you who like to blast out at Harleys, my Harleys for the last 25 years have rendered that slight imperfection in me harmless by putting self cancelling turn signals on the bike.
BMW with all their world class technology, (ABS, Integrated brakes) see fit to let me ride around all day with a flashing turn signal.
My last three Harleys had true self cancelling turn signals and before them my 1980 yes 1980 Harley when you took your thumb off the button it quit flashing. Not technologically self cancelling but cancelling all the same.
Those of you who have been riding BMW all your life will say that I am just not smart enough to ride a BMW, but I say that Harley has spoiled me and now I must get my mind back to yesteryear when riding the BMW.
OK guys (and gals) go ahead and take your pot shots, I can take it. :clap

mine self-cancel??
Buy the way those harley ones were self cancelling because the vibration would just cause it to come undone(similiar to there self-loosening bolts all over the bike)

Stinky bait. :brow
Seriously, I can't tell you the number of times I have left my signal on. Everyone does it until they break the habit. It is especially tough coming from bikes with self-canceling flashers.
I just got in the habit of cancelling them manually.

uhhhmmm, my rockster has self canceling signals. i freaking love them, but in the interest of bmw purity i have disconnected the self-canceling feature along with that pesky set of extra spark plugs and those high tech brakes and heated handle grips. daniel boone didn't have any of that junk of his motorcycle.
am i incorrect in guessing that most of the new beemers cancel their own signals??

As far as I can tell you are incorrect. None of the RTs have self cancelling signals

I usually leave mine flashing because I will eventually make another turn in that same direction. It sort of becomes a premonition of the turn.
Come to think of it, those BMWs really are techologically advanced especially when a machine can anticipate your turns. Now, if I can just get it to figure out where I'm going.

My GS has self cancellers, as did my S and my K75s.
Our RS and Tina's R don't, which I suspect is because they have a manual speedo feed. I think the bikes with electronic speedo feeds can do a calculation on distance traveled, which seems to be part of the self canelling calculation.
FWIW, my VFR doesn't have them either.

my S only cancels the turn signals on its own when the oil is fresh, its sorta like a "thank you", as the oil gets older, it stops doing it, i know its time for a change when i signal right and the left signal comes on or if they don't cancel at all even when i do it manually
but seriously, no, really, if my bike has self canceling turn signals i have only seen them work once, and it was in a hard turn, maybe things will improve once the sand and ice are gone and i stop babying it into the turns

BOOFER,
Man you are a life saver. You must be an old Harley rider. I'll be ordering the signal minder tomorrow morning. Thanks

This doesn't make any sense, I thought all the recent year BMWs have self-canceling signals? Of course, that doesn't mean anything if yours are broken.
Kbasa, even the C has self-cancelers (most years but not the earliest) and that's an electrical not electronic speedo; there's a little wheel inside the hub that sends an AC voltage (yes, a separate curcuit) and this sends the distance signal to the self-cancelers. When my speedo stopped working my signals never canceled, but once I fixed the DC ground break, the odo and the self-cancelers worked again.

Signals? We don't need no stanking signals!
Wait till you try to blow the horn. People will think you want to turn left instead :wave for a long time :brow

I know what you mean, bro - my 1983 GoldWing had self-cancelling sigs! The Kisan Signal Minder, set for 8 seconds and wired to the brake light, is the way to go on your BMW.

I had a 1985 K100 that would cancel after 30 seconds or so. Now I have a 1995 (yes ten years newer) R100 that does not. Sure it's an Airhead but it has a lot of stuff borrowed from the other product lines, including the switch gear and and a few smaller electrical doodads.
