After last year's trip across Canada and back we said "That is the last cross country trip we are going to do".
This year I asked Jean if she wanted to go see Stephanie and Jeff and their twins in Tampa, Florida.( Stephanie grew up next door to us).
Jean was very enthusiastic about that idea so we made all the arrangements and set the date.
On Friday April 18th we were all packed and ready to go. As soon as the snow flurries stopped we were on the road.
Our packing for this trip was the most difficult we have ever encountered. We had to take all of our cold weather clothing and all of our hot weather clothing.
That morning we had everything packed in our saddlebags and top-box except our riding suits and boots. Then we took out what we would be wearing that day. That was the Comfort-Temp underpants, Gerbing electric jackets and our Comfort-Temp gloves. We also put the Gore-Tex liners in our Savanna suits.
We first went to Fallon then made a right on US 95 going South. On the outskirts of Fallon it started raining. Shortly after that it turned to snow. By the time we got to Schurz it had mostly stopped. Except for a little sleet before Tonopah, it was dry the rest of the way to Kingman, AZ.
Along the way, in Schurz we saw a group of riders who stopped to warm up. I found out later that there was a Death Valley ride that weekend. As we rode along I would see riders in various forms of dress; one in particular just North of Tonopah in a leather jacket with a scarf, khaki pants, with white socks and walking shoes. I talked to a friend who went the other day and he
said that many of them turned back. He also said that now after years of telling them about riding clothing and being ignored, if they don't ask he doesn't tell.
The next day From Kingman, AZ to Belen, NM. It was cold in the morning and snowing in Flagstaff, AZ. On I-40 going East we saw 2 burning cars along side the road. They were many miles apart and the fire departments were there. I just thought it was odd to see two burning cars on the same day.
In Belen, NM we stopped to see our friend Mary. She has a new F650CS that she bought last year and she has not ridden it yet. She is 82 years old and I don't think she will be riding again, but after close to 60 years of riding, she can't give up having a bike.
From Belen, NM we went to Carlsbad, NM by way of White Sands National Monument. It is a very white gypsum sand and it was crowded. We asked the Ranger why?. It was Easter Sunday and thousands of people go there to picnic and surf down the dunes. A day at the beach without the water.
We spent the next day at Carlsbad Caverns.
For the next few days we just rode East. I try for at least half of our trip to keep off of the Interstate Highways; it is not as fast but it generally much more pleasant. We worked our way over to US 84 staying in Gatesville, TX then Natchez, MS. From Natchez, MS we got on US 98 through Pensacola, FL.
Our intention was to go along the coast to Panama City, FL but it was so slow and crowded that my only thought was to go North and get on Interstate 10. We spent the night at De Funiak Springs, FL.
I thought that we might be safe, since out friends Mike and Marge weren't in the area. They tend to ride in the rain.
Friday, April 25th. De Funiak Springs to Tampa, FL. I-10 to US 19.
It was raining when we got up and for the next 8 hours we had a steady hard rain. According to the TV News it was a record breaking 4 inches. It stopped about 1 hour before we got to Tampa. It started again that night with more lightning than we have ever seen before. It was hard to sleep through the light show.
We spent the next 6 days in Tampa and Disney World.
Goin' South, actually it's North but it's leaving Florida and going into"The South".
From Orlando we went up to Fargo, GA into the Okefenokee Swamp to the Stephen Foster State Park.
"I don't think we're in Kansas (Nevada) anymore".
This is why we made sure we could pack all of our cold weather riding gear. It was hot and humid. And something was growing there that does not grow out west. Within a couple of hours I got started sneezing repeatedly and got a horrible sinus headache. When we stopped at Valdosta, GA I bought some Benedryl and that stopped that.
The next day it was cooler with some light showers, not bad. We went to Andersonville, GA the National Historic Site and POW Museum. That was interesting but very depressing. That was on Saturday May 3rd. There were lots of bikes, at least 2 clubs. That night we spent in Rome, GA.
We took US 27 North to US 127 through Tennessee. Cool and sunny again. A beautiful ride through the mountains to Cave City, KY. Next to Mammoth Cave, KY. Another huge thunderstorm that night. We had to turn on the heater in the motel. The next morning we took a cave tour. One lady got scared and had to leave. It may have been claustrophobia or the big crickets inside the cave. They did look like things from the movie "8 Legged Freaks".
That night we're watching the weather channel and the major thunderstorms and tornados to the south of us.
We started heading South through Nashville, TN to the Natchez Trace Parkway. It was our intention to take it all the way to Natchez, MS about 400 miles. It is like the Blue Ridge Parkway. A scenic road with no services on the road. You have to leave the Parkway and go to nearby towns. The speed limit is 50 MPH so it's not that bad. Lots of deer and wild turkeys. But then we
got to a section closed because of storm damage. I took almost 100 miles of back roads to get to an open section of it again.
That night in Tupelo, MS we were in bed. I turned on the TV to the local news. They have great radar! They said that the tornado warning was going to be in the north side of Tupelo at 9:46 pm. It was almost 9:30. I shook Jean and said "Lets get our riding clothes on and go downstairs to the lobby." So we did. We sat with others and watched the TV until it had passed. The next
morning there were storm warnings just to the South of us. The TV said that parts of the Natchez Trace were closed because of the storm. To kill some time we went to Elvis's birth place. It's just a small white house. We did buy some stuff at the gift shop. Then I thought about the storms, the Natchez trace being closed and I thought "Screw you guys, I'm going home".
Jean did notice a place "Toad Suck Park". We didn't stop.
I got my maps out. The same maps that I had in Tampa and had spread out all over the room to dry, then taped back together. I found the quickest way home. US 78 up to Memphis Tenn.
then get on I-40 West. We stopped at Clarksville, Arkansas.
We were dressed and packed when the town sirens went off. I think one or more of them was at the motel, LOUD!. We went down to the lobby. I did not see many people around so we went to a restaurant next door. The girl said we could go down in the basement and they could serve us there. After awhile a lady called her husband (the chief of police) and he said it was all
clear. So we went back upstairs and had breakfast. On the road it was getting hot and very windy. We stopped in Oklahoma City about 3:00pm then went on to Shamrock, TX. About 5:00pm the tornados went through Oklahoma City.
Shamrock, TX to Gallup, NM. High Winds all day 40 mph gusting to 50 mph..
Gallup,NM. No wind, great!! But on the morning news they said it was 22 degrees out. I stuck my head out the door, they were right. Change back to winter clothes. On to Beatty, NV. The worst part of that was going through Las Vegas.
Beatty, NV to Reno,NV. Nice, pleasant ride.
It was a great trip. some things of note. The best gas mileage we got was 44mpg on the Natchez Trace, the worst was on I-40 in Oklahoma and Texas in the high winds 24mpg.
All of our riding gear worked very well. It kept us warm and dry when needed.
We did cut our planned trip short by a couple if days because of the storms.
It was 24 days, 6190 miles. It was, " The last time we will go across the country".
Until next year, maybe.
John and Jean Ferris

Maybe it's time to pick up a GPS, Matthew. I use mine all the time when I'm out exploring the back roads. When I want to go home, I just tell the little black box to show me the way, and it does! Amazing technology brought to you by your friendly local Air Force. :thumb

Jetdoc, maybe we will ride with you next time>>>someday I will purchace a little black box, but i was under the impression the GPS that bmw offers only workes on main roads and not backcountry roads, anyway that trip was a blast, turned out to be an ok day even if we were worried allittle for a time, where we went was up fernan lake to the top and down the back side were we ran into this state campgrounds attendant, we asked him for directions and he said to make a right just after this bridge and down the road shortly it turns into pavement, this guy was an old logger up here for years, well 20 miles shortly later the road did turn to asphalt, my poor k1200lt, it needed a bath, we came out at enaville, so we decide to head east to thompson falls for the most unbelievable ice cream found, the place make it with blocks of hard icecream in this machine that they add any type of berries or whatever you want and the machine presses it out into a bowl or waffle cone, wonderful stuff, then we went up to clarkfork to sandpoint for coffee at the local starbucks, this place has a balcony over looking the marina so to enjoy your stay watching all the boats coming in and out... a very fullfilling day...matthew

My understanding is that the GPS BMW offers has the main roads as the base map, then you have to load in the maps you want.

Either way, a Garmin not branded BMW is just as good and usually less expensive.

My GPS Is a Garmin Street Pilot III. (It's the same unit BMW offered last year, without the $600 BMW markup. ) It came with a MapSource program which allows you to download local and regional maps to the memory card of the unit, and covers most forest service roads and trails. There are other brands out there that have similar features and are less expensive.

Even without the extra maps a good GPS can still show you the way home. All you need to do is set a waypoint for your home, and tell the machine to track to the waypoint. You may not have roadmaps, but even the least expensive units will give you a pointer to keep you going in the right direction.

could not rent a BMW in maui, well had to check out the roads in maui, with no luck i had to rent a new harly roadking, we put 250 miles on today and went to the most incredible bike ride of my life, there is a span of 30-40 miles on the coast of maui with 640 curves, thats right 640 corners, the only holdback was i had to force the harly around these corners not like my k1200 at all literaly had to lift and push hard to get this tank to manuver around the bends, but the view was fantastic, i was like being deep in the amizon rain forrest, but riding on the coast overlooking the ocean view but also looking straight up the mountains, as it carved it way thru the dense forest, we stoped and swam in an ocean cove no pictures yet, the beach was wonderful, the water was at least 80deg, all sun and fun all day, we ended up at the 7 pools, which is at the end of our journey, lots of people enjoying the water in these pools i just took pictures of the water and the water falls, well have to go tomorrow , is another day still more crusine on its way..matthew

I live on the Oregon coast and ride here in the winter because it is warmer than other areas I like and because most of the tourists have gone home.

Saturday the storm was to end, still cloudy most of the morning and in the mid 40's. I headed south down the beach checking out the nooks and crannies along the way. By the time I hit Brookings the clouds had parted but still not much warmer, say maybe 50 or so. I headed East up the Smith River (just north of Cresent City, CA) a real nice drive thru the Red Woods, not much traffic always makes it nicer. About ten miles I crossed the river, I was going to take the back way into Cresent City but headed over the mountian instead. I checked with a the local teenagers and was assured the roads did come out on Hwy 199 so I wouldn't get lost. It wound along the river fifteen or so miles then headed up over the mountian. Nice rock road and not many pot holes, no one else here. The higher I got the more snow on the corners, I went as far as I could but without better traction there was just no way, so... Back down the mountian, its getting late and I am headed for home. 302 miles for the day with a high temp spike of 52 degrees. A nice day ride, after all this is only Janurary. I atached a pic, so we'll se if it comes thru.

Brad,

As far as I know, the only difference is that the BMW Navigator (Garmin SPIII) has the BMW dealer GPS locations installed.

Question: can these be updated and if so, can they also be downloaded from the unit to MapSource and then transfered to another Garmin unit?

I cannot figure out BMWs ahole mentality as to keeping the dealer GPS locations secretive. They should all be downloadable from the BMW Motorrad site for every country they operate in. Like they don't want me to know where their dealers are. :dunno

Well kids,am happy to report that I RODE every inch of the way t'Daytona, and back, coverin'just a tick less than 5000 miles, and when i got home, and looked out towards the river, counted 6 vehicles parked on the river ice fishing. Was a blast, screamin'past the loaded trucks, with full dressers, bein'carefully transported,so they wouldn't get dirty, and perish the thought of actually RIDNG them,i mean, the weather has to be suitable for muscle shirts'n'shorts,no?
Getting stranded for 3 nights, waitin'out a late season snow storm only added to the overall adventure. This was my third time attendin';the goings on at Daytona, and I'm proud t'say,I RODE,each and every time, and in 2 weeks,I'll be celebrating my 60th B/day....Nose
ps,if i could figure out how t'add pics,i would,cuz i've got some dandy's...

Well,on the return ride,I ran into a wall of snow,( heavy wet stuff) which required wipin'my face shield'bout every 10 seconds, and the inside was not only foggin'up,but icin'up as well. After 10 miles,I came to a toll booth, and the woman there said I was in the worst of it ( yeah, right), and that I'd be out of it in 19 miles? Anyway,70 miles later, I did get out of the snow, but by then it was gettin'dark, and I'd had enough,so grabbed a room,in Tomah, Wisconsin. I woke up in the middle of the night, flipped the Weather Channel on,and noticed a band of white, from Minneapolis, right'cross where I was,and when I opened the drapes,I saw'bout 3 inches of the white stuff, coverin'the ground. it snowed all night, and the next day,to the tune of over a foot,so, goin'anywhere would've been suicide, therefore, i was forced to stay till it blew over, then was able to continue, and made it home that night. IF I can attach some pics,I will. If not,I'll have to get a third grader over t'show me what t'do...Nose

Wow, looks like a cold ride.

I just got back from a little vacation myself. I bought a R1100 S from my little brother on my way down to Southern California to see my sister. My test ride was a beautiful few hundred miles in the foot hills below Yosemite, where I grew up, with my Dad on his RT and my little bro on his new sporty Yamaha. The valley itself was very rainy, but the rest of the ride was sunny, clear and beautiful. We stopped by the Merced river outside of Mariposa for lunch.

Since I had to take a tile saw and some other tools down to my sisters, I popped the S in the back of my truck and took it with me. My sis was focused on the tile job, but I was able to pry her loose for a short time. She has a little old NightHawk which she rode along for a short tour of Hwy 1. It looks like mudslides have attacked some portions of the road recently, but it was still a gorgeous ride, with the sun setting over the Pacific a few hundred feet to our right. :brow

My dad road his RT down to see how we were doing with our tiling. He also agreed to go for a little Harbor tour with me on our bikes. Unfortunately it was pouring down rain on the trip back to Yosemite. We were a cute little caravan though. Father in front on a RT and Daughter behind with a silver S in a silver toyota tacoma, in the pouring rain, over the Grapevine.

I'm back in Oregon now, back at work, but getting a little ride in every day. I'm new to this touring thing, but I'm just giddy with the possibilities. :D
Next time I'll be leaving the truck at home.

Was fortunate enough to sneek away this weekend from albany area of NY through Mass. on rt. 2 over the mountains to portsmouth,NH. Its been a long winter and felt great to be riding on asphalt rather than snowmobiling the Adirondacks. My wife and myself had some fresh seafood sat. evening then sun. morning crossed into Maine and headed for home over rt. 4 through NH into Concord then rt.9 through VT. There were a lot of bikes out this weekend enjoying the 70 degree weather with very few bugs.Looking forward to many more rides this summer including taking a week off work to go to my 1st international rally in Lima,OH. Can anyone tell me what can be expected at the rally. Ive been to loudon in the past and it was pretty rowdy I would expect the crowd to be a lot more mellow. Should I preregister or can I register when I get there? ps. Im new to the forum and I type real slow. :)

I would recommend preregistering and it helps the process to know how many people are coming. It will be a blast, there is lots of information over in the

If ya look closely,u can see my'lil'magnetic heater...

Oz-those are great pics and they remind me of the time back in 87 when I took off from Michigan on my trusty 550 Honda Nighthawk and drove the southern route into California. The winter that year, as I recall, was a particularly mild one and I was farting around down in Death Valley, Kings Canyon/Sequoia and up around Mono/Yosemite.

An emergency back home had me hitting the road in a hurry and i blasted from somewhere near Lee Vining in Cali all the way to Vail in probably the longest haul I’ve ever done in a day. I was rolling over some 11,000 foot summit at about 1130 that night, freezing my arse off (that ol Eclipse electric vest was great but it would have taken a blast furnace inside my jacket to warm me up at this point).

I was extremely limited on funds as i had scheduled a western union transfer with my girlfriend before the emergency and was unable to pick up the money in Fresno since I was headed in the opposite direction now, and I figured those luxury hotels I was passing there in Vail were waaaay beyond my price range.

The cold had become almost unbearable by then, so i pulled off the freeway and motored into some hotel to see if maybe they could just give me a broom closet for the night. Well, it turned out that because the skiing season had been so crappy due to the lack of snow, the rooms were going for $20/night! AWESOME!

Lord, I was never so happy to throw my shivering body under a hot shower! As soon as I hit that bed I was unconscious.

I was awakened by muted hoots and hollers--it sounded like a party was going on somewhere off in the distance. I pulled my bleary arse from the bed, peeked out the window, and about crapped my drawers--a ton of snow was now on the ground and I had a room that looked dead on to the bottom of a huge ski run that was literally crawling with skiers!!!

Well, to make a long story tolerable, I ended up being snowed in there for 3 days, managed to get my money wired to me in Vail, and ultimately made it home in time to address what had by then become an urgent but non-emergency matter. I have some pics of the incident somewhere buried in my "hard-copy" picture box in the basement and if I can ever find em, maybe I'll post a few here--I did a LOT of touring on that ol 550 over the three years I owned it and I've got enough stories to keep an army of Cossacks bored for months!

Thanks for firing up some great memories for me!

Ride safe!

Exploring local areas seems to be a good idea with gas prices so high. So I
examined my Fla. map and found a good day trip from Daytona to the St.
Johns river near Jacksonville. The intended route was CR13 from Espanola to
Hastings. I soon discovered this to be a brick road built in the 1880s. How
quaint! The road was fairly smoothe to start with, but deteriated with each
mile. At one point, a deer was jogging just ahead of me while I was doing
20mph. Many potholes and sand washes made me stand up and do my best
dirt bike efforts (while piloting this R1200CLC). At mile 14, I decided the road
was getting better, so I sat down and clicked up a gear. Thats when I went
into a broadslide that launched me 20' from where the bike stopped. I landed
on my head and neck, then back. After checking myself for broken bones, I
got up and tried to bring the bike upright. I only managed to bring it to a 45
degree angle. The loose sand prevented better traction for my feet. I prayed for someone to come along to help--it came after 45 min. as a dump
truck driver. A true miracle considering that no one uses this road! I rode
the remaining 3 miles to civilization and found a Jiffy store. After recouping,I
rode 50 miles home on the interstate. Xrays confirmed no broken bones and
the bike is in the shop getting new fiberglass. My brother said now I was
ready for a GS and South America. I disagreed.

My understanding is that the GPS BMW offers has the main roads as the base map, then you have to load in the maps you want.

Either way, a Garmin not branded BMW is just as good and usually less expensive.

I have the BMW Navigator II ( AKA Garmin 2610 ). It is a wonder. After loading the western US into a 512 compact flash chip we rode all over the western US without a hitch, even looked up motels and resaurants as we traveled.
Incidently it has all of the little county dirt roads around where we live in Texas Hill Country. Try it you'll like it! :heart

I just got back from riding down to see my son in the Marines. It was beautiful. I rode south east from Mi. Down 340 through Viginia. East to Chesapke. Took US 17 to NC. :bikes Hung with my son a few days. Then headed west to Gatlinburg. The Smokeys were spectacular even in the rain. I wasn't happy about my 93 mile an hour ticket outside of Nashville but what are you going to do. Then I rode the smaller roads up to Chicago hung out with some freinds for a few days. Then accross US 20 through a hail storm. I ate at this cool Amish restruant at 5 and 20. Then back towards home. It was a great, peaceful trip. Staying mostly on the smaller roads with all the small towns and all the freindly people. Man I love my LT. It felt like it was smiling right along with me the whole 3000 miles.

From Boston:

I-93N (MA) to I-95N (MA) to Rt. 9N (ME) to I-95N (ME) to Rt. 201 (ME) to

Rt. 16E (ME) to Rt. 15N (ME) to Rts. 15N/6N (ME) to Rt. 201 (ME) to

Canadian Border to Rt. 173N (CAN) to I-73N (CAN) to Quebec (Centre Ville exit, just after bridge.)

Right off exit towards Centre Ville. Follow the boulevard straight to Old Quebec.

I-73N to Rt. 138N/E to Forestville, over the river on the ferry (make reservations) to Rimouski (Rt. 132.)

Rt. 132S/W to I-20W to I-73S and back home.

**********

In Maine, get off heading towards Kennebunkport and Rt. 9.

Follow Rt. 9N past Kennebunkport and into Porpoise Cove (eat breakfast at the Wayfairer Restaurant, a good local place.)

In Greenville, ME (at the south end of Moosehead Lake---what a beautiful lake...you will take lots of pictures) there are restaurants and pubs. The Black Frog was good (although their t-shirts sport a green frog...don't ask.)

Don't breakfast in Greenville (unless you want to.) Instead, head on up
Rt. 15N/6N to Jackman, ME (on Rt. 201N) and eat at the Four Seasons Restaurant.

After that is the border with Canada. (Gas up In Jackman, it is much less expensive than gas in Canada [1.09$ to 1.16$ CAN/liter]). Except for a money exchange stop, I went straight through to Quebec.

The Old Quebec section is quite beautiful. I believe it is the only walled city in North America. The area is much like wandering around a town in France (without the expense---a great bargain in relation.) Plenty of good restaurants and little hotels in which to stay. Plenty of shopping---reasonable to very expensive. The folks and the food were great. Part of the old section is closed to motor vehicles, making the site seeing much more relaxing. (You will take lots of pictures here too.).

I stayed at a little hotel called the Charles-Alexandre (just after the park and the Museum of Fine Arts). There was a restaurant whose name I cannot for the life of me remember (Nouveau or Nouvelle France, perhaps), but it was located off a small alley that was packed with artists and their drawings and paintings. (The Carribou Stew was great, and try some of the local brews!)

After that I headed up the St. Lawrence River I-70N to Rt. 138N/E, hopping off briefly to check out the island just north of Quebec (lots of farm land.) I then proceeded to Forestville (great scenery along the way) for the ferry accross the St. Lawrence to Rimouski (Rt. 132.) Rimouski is a small city with plenty of good eats and little shops. Lots of good places to stay as well.

Trois Pistole (Three Pistols) was my next destination, not too far down the road (Rt. 132 S/W). I loved the name so I stopped there for a coffee and a quick look-see for Clint. The coffe was good but, sadly, no Clint Eastwood.

After that it was a highway ride on I-20 back to I-73 and home.

Rimouski to Boston: 12-12.5 hours with stops for gasoline and a coffee break in Portsmouth, ME.

Been riding my 1991 K75 for a month back and forth to work on the back roads of Maine.
Sited and waved to my first siting of another K75 with a "geared-up" rider on the bridge between Brunswick and Topsham, Maine heading north on 201. He low waved back...Parabellum windshield and bike setup for long rides.

Any one out there fit that discription???

It's not where I've been but where I'm going . Insane , it's winter here in the N.W. and that means rain, rain, and more rain oh and some snow thrown in for good measure. This time every year I begin my spring ride plans to give me something to look forward to . In the past it has been Phoenix,Az. , Banff B.C once solo and the following year my 15 yr. old daughter joined me for the Icefields Parkway . It was great and what made it more difficult was we camped instead of luxury. Call me cheap but I prefer to pitch a tent ,see who else rides into camp and inquire as to where the came and where they go. One year I put a thread on K-Bikes .com and 4 guys joined me for a ride to Ensenata , Mexico . In 08 my trip is called " Coast to Coast Baby" Portland,Or. to Key West this will take some planning due to the weather variables that will be encountered. I leave the last week of May and return to be home 06/14 . The ride down not so bad , some heat in Az and such but the return through Colorado , Wy., or Utah and Idaho might be on the white side if you know what I mean . I ride an 03 GT with now 80K on her ticker and by the end of this trip I hope to have put close to the triple digit on her . This bike has only brought me nothing but joy and smiles . I love this bike .Therapy who needs it , just get on your bike and it all seems so distant . :bolt

Weaselled out of work for the day to watch the AHMRA (American Historic Motorcycling Racing Assoc) races at Roebling Road Raceway (near Savannah GA)
Many beautifully prepared bikes, older bikes performing extremely well. A lot of time, effort and money go into the sport, and the good riders are very competitive.
A great venue, weather was cool (for the south) and bright. A few pics:

Here is a short movie clip of our ride through Central America to Panama.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VSZx86EZGKY

The plan was to airfreight the bikes to Ecuador, but my buddy Goran (tall guy) did not have the requisite visa to get into Panama, so we turned back.
Nevertheless, we had a great time. The people are wonderful, food and lodging dirt cheap, and no misadventures came our way. The Mayan ruins are fascinating, the geography ever changing, the border beaurocracy unbelievable.
We did about 15k kms in 5 weeks. The weather was perfect (winter), warm at low altitudes, cool in the mountains. The return ride through the USA was very cold (first week of January) Highway droning in 30 degrees was a bit of an ordeal.
My F650gs did not miss a beat, and proved to be the better tool when the going got tough. Those 3 bedroom 1200's are just too heavy, although you could really load them up.
A memorable ride!

Since there has been very little to do as we have been waiting for the coders to recue us,satelite is down. I thought today would be a nice day to go for a pleasant ride On my BMW."Tink"

A nice trip to a small town noth east of Oshawa, Ontario it was a bit chiily as it is just the start of May. Went up the Chimong road, this road was the way the early Irish settlers used when the Canadian govenment of the 1830's. Gave grants to the imigrations from Ireland with 70 acer parcel's of land along with the way to help settle the town of Peterbough,Ontario. there you can find on the Ashbunam road, the famous Lift locks of the Trent Canal. And while I was there I had a chance to go into the Peterborogh Museum. There it has the history of the town, The founding fathers who were Irish settlers(Roberts, Adams) and business men. Also the history of the Thomas Edoson Company you may know it by it's current name, General Electric. Also anothe famous Company who has been there for @100 years,is the Quaker Oats Company nice display's for both Companies. There also is anther Company to note and it was mad famous for their Canoes, anothe exellent showing, the displays are rotated and new ones introduced every 3mths. if you ever get a chance go, great time was had
so I am home now and writing this little story. hope you liked it.:gerg :ca :ca

I just bought my new 2004 R1150RT, one week later I decided to take short trip.
Started on Saturday Oct 24 with sunny clear sky's and 45 degrees. (Murfreesboro TN)
Rode from Nashville, through KY, IL, MO, KS, CO, NM, TX, OK, AR, MS, AL and finally back to TN. 12 states and 3169 miles.
My Mother and sister live in Colorado Springs and used that as my turning point. I took a day trip up into the Rockies, through South Park, over Hoosier pass, Breckenridge, Leadville... a perfect ride in the mountains, the pavement was dry but there was snow on the side of the road.
I took interstate all the way to Colorado but on the way home I stuck to the two lane backroads. Travelling down to NM then crossing over the pan handle of TX. working my way through OK, then back into TX. Spent one night in Texarkana, then over to MS where I picked up the Natchez Trace and followed that home.

Looking forward to finding some riding buddies. My wife like to ride but just day trips right now.

I got to ride my K100 today, first time since mid november! I got to go.... a whole 20 feet! I know, this is sad. :cry I just wanted to make sure it would start and move it to a different spot in the shop. If it weren't for 200 feet of ice/snow and 50 feet of mud, I might have been able to make it to the road for a quick, cold ride. I will just have to stick to riding my horses for now. Darn

The good news however, started right up! My boyfriends cold blooded beast (Honda Magna) took more than 10 tries, and some choice words.

Our annual fishing trip was scheduled for January 16- 19 in Naples Fl. (840 miles) A two year work project was due to go live on the same dates, so I had to decline and did not book any airline tickets. However as the date approached and seeing delays with the project launch I started looking at riding down to Naples. Then I checked the weather map. The high for Murfreesboro TN was going to be 28, (just too cold for me) but Wednesday Jan 14 the high for the day was 44 degrees, which is not too bad to ride in. So I took off a day early with the cold front chasing me all the way south. I fugured the faster I headed south the warmer it would be. I left around noon on Wed. and pulled into a hotel about a hour north of the Florida state line on I 75. (400 miles). The next day was an easy ride as temperatures got better during the day and ended up in Naples around 5pm.
I spend Thursday night and Friday in Naples, got one fishing trip in then headed home on Saturday. (Monday was the new launch date and I had to be home) I wanted to leave room for delays as the cold front still lingered around. There is a pass north of Chattanooga that can get iced up easly and I needed to hit that during the warmest part of the day.
From Naples I rode to Atlanta. As I was going through the Atlanta bypass it started to sprinkle/ rain. At 9 pm the air was cold and with wet roads I decided to pull in for the night. Sunday I slept in and waited for dry roads, I was home in just a few hours, a pretty easy ride and sunshine to warm me up.
I wore my Tourmaster series 2 jacket and pants. When it got cold I wore a fleece jacket under the Tourmaster which kept me warm. I could have used heated pants, but with layers on it was okay. The problem was keeping my hands warm. My gloves would heat up with the heated hand grips and then sweat a little. When I pulled over and took my gloves off the moisture in the gloves would freeze and it was hard to get my hands warm again. I also took a pair of leather mittens which worked out perfect. I was afraid that it would be hard to clutch or brake but that wasn't an issue.
Temps ranged from 70 in south Florida to 30's in GA.
The total trip was about 1770 miles.
If I can do this trip in the coldest part of the year... I'm getting the map out and looking at Daytona, it's closer and it would be warmer!

Hi everyone,
I've been a member for a couple of years, but am still new to posting here. Staciebug, that must have been really nerve wracking! Glad you're OK.

I live in VT and I decided to take my RT in yesterday (2/27) for the annual service (still under warranty) while the roads and my driveway were ice free. The temp was around 42F, had gotten to 50F earlier, it was now dark, raining and the crosswind was blowing an honest 50mph! Not as hairy as what most of you have done, but for a returning newbie it was wild!

That was the first of many rides of the year.
Cheers!

:blahI rode about 1400 miles this week. Started with a day ride around Cour'd'elene Lake in northern ID. Wonderful, long curvy roads full of sweeping corners and u turns... but... I was already shaken from the night before. I was coming home on the freeway, there was some confusion in a construcion zone and the person ahead of me slammed on the brakes and swerved. My front rotars are bad, and I unfortunately went for the back break first. I locked it up and slid sideways past the car, then fish-tailed to a stop. Then, when we were going around a u-turn the next day at CDA lake, a car was completely in my lane, head on, coming around the corner, I cut to the inside, and was lucky I was NOT in a car, or I would not have fit. About 60 miles down the road, we approached a sweeping, blind corner, I slowed to about 42mph and thought I saw a dog out of the corner of my eye. It was a deer. She ran to the front left of me then tried to jump, she cleared the windshield only to have her hip and legs nail the left side of my upper body and head. Miraculously, I had leaned into her, and when she almost peeled me from the handle bars, I think I gave my bike more gas. The deer flipped off into a ditch and ran, I pulled over safely down the road. My fingers were swollen before I got my glove off, my whole left arm was on fire and my neck and shoulder hurt, but I know how lucky I am. We picked up the broken pieces of my old K-bike and continued on. The next morning, though I was a little sore, we took off for Klammath falls OR. The weather was fair and the ride went fine. The only wild life I hit was a bird and it was not as lucky as the deer. I will try to post some pics. We took I-90, then down towards Pendleton to Hwy 84, then hit Hwy 97 alll the way down. One the way home we stayed on 97 all the way to I-90. Beautiful views from above the river, and some nice curvy hwys.

You were very lucky in the incidents you described. Hopefully you future rides won't be so eventful. Many more experienced riders have had worse outcomes in similar situations. you don't sound discouraged so keep riding, in my experience it is unusual to have so many close call is such a short period of time. But then I like to hang on the back-roads.

Several family members who have ridden a long time are very worried about me, even though the only incident that was my fault was the first, the rest were flukes. If it weren't for the safety course, and some books I have read on riding, I might not be here. I still ride my bike 5 days a week or more. My car sits around in summer. Hopefully I have had enough close calls for this year. I know poeple who have had one close call and haven't ridden since. Good thing I am young and stubborn. :brad

the disks on the front are both a little warped, they have a grabby spot, I can't hardly use them below 20mph, thats why I went for the back brake. I found some used brakes disks, they are for an 86 K100, does anyone know if they would fit my bike 85 K100RS?

Staciebug you might not get a response since the rally is going on at this time, you could shurley try dave hopkins at beaudrys on tuesday, or sometimes i use the parts fiche at bobs bmw, just do a year search for replacement rotors and see it the part numbers align-up....matthew

Thank you Matt, I ordered the parts on ebay, they were said to be in great condition, no warp etc. I will see you at the rally in republic if you are there, my dad's rental LT arrives this afternoon from Classic Rides. We might ride around to Harrison and St. Maries, (where I hit the deer last week) wish me luck! I still have to get one of my turn signals working though, stupid deer. Still missing a mirror too... sad:scratch

I buy a lotto ticket every week, no money to be had!! I just want one million, thats all. I went to the Republic Rally and managed to not hit anything, except the keg during the keg push. :drink
