OK, I got to vent.

Its March 11th, tomorrow is the St. Patrick's Day Parade here in Pittsburgh PA.

I am sitting in front of my fireplace with three logs burning.

It is 30 degrees F. and snowing.

The forecast for the next two weeks is COLD and more Snow.

I have a 04 R1200CLC in my garage, purchased in December.

I am sick of winter.

I think I need a sidecar.

I feel better now

Thanks for listening

With maybe one day above freezing in the last month, I have begun to believe the ice age is upon us again. I am beginning to understand the line Jimmy Buffett sang "I just shot six holes in my freezer, I think I've got cabin fever".
It is so bad, I was even looking at Orange county chopper jackets.

No kidding, I take a seasonal layoff from beginning of Dec. until late in Apr. and am just going stir crazy. My driveway is fairly steep and gravel, and although I plow it with my tractor, it's just too icy to get out on a bike. I sit in front of the PC and watch "The mountain Coarse" when it gets bad, helps a bit. When it gets really bad and even the dog is going nuts, we put on the gerbings, put the top down on the Z3, and head for the twisties (HWY55)

Then it snows again, and I'm glad my jacket ain't got no gun pocket!

:brow - we are having a bit of a hot spell. :stick

Today. Sunny and warm. Breezy in the hills during the morning. Highs in the 70s coastside to the mid 80s inland. East winds 5 to 15 mph during the morning. Except 15 to 25 mph with gusts to 35 mph in the hills. A 5 to 15 mph seabreeze developing during the afternoon.

On the other side of that coin a 1300 Sq Ft starter house is about $650K :doh

Just got back from Arizona where we rode a little over 800 miles in much milder weather (although I wouldn't say warm). Now, nothing but cold and rain/snow mix here. Thought we were going to have a sunny day this weekend, but it changed to snow and cold. It's usually crappy weather for St. Patrick's Day, so I am sure the good weather is coming next weekend! :nod

All that wonderful riding in Arizona has given me more Spring fever than I had before I left. :banghead

this has been one of the nicest winters we have had in years. Less than 7 inches of snow so far (in my part of the state anyway) and temps way above normal. So it's really hard for me to complain too loudly. Besides, Spring is right around the corner! Hopefully we have a normal spring, sometimes the patterns get a little confused and we go straight into a hot summer. I am one of those people that prefers 50 degrees over 100 degrees anyday. One thing about cool is that you can dress for it. Not so with heat, you can only shed so much.

i was sooo happy when i left my house tuesday morning for work, the ice and snow finally melted off the driveway. the weather prediction was for rain, great, wash the salt and sand off the roads. it started snowing around noon and the temps dropped drastically. took me 2 hours to go the 13 miles home at 4pm, grrrrr.

Can you feel the love?

Currently I am in nice sunny Orlando where the high was 70F. The sucky part. I am stuck in a convention center and have no motorcycle. I have not even been able to make a run to Daytona. This situation is what Tantalus must have felt like. There are only 30 bikes parked in front of the hotel we are staying at.

If Saturday and Sunday continues the 38-44 degree trend of this past week I will be forced to put some early March Rounder Miles on the ole GS. The main roads are dry and the residential streets are melting fast. Although, the roads may be a little wet, the GS can handle it. It kinda makes me giddy. :D

Early Spring is not unheard of in Alaska but they are pretty rare.

today the driveway has 4 - 6 inches of snow and it is going to warm up all the way to 19 or so.

Look at the bright side.

When us snowbound riders pull our bikes out every spring, it feels like a new toy. The guys down south can't say that.

And this is what I have to look forward to...the wait is worth it.

Took off this morning for the Detroit area fly fishing show. It's an annual event I don't miss, and the roads were covered with snow and slush this morning as I headed over there. At least the roads were mostly dry when I came home. Maybe a chance to ride this week if the ice clears off.

That may be true Dave, but the greatest gain in my riding skills came from being a flying instructor for many years (judgement, observation and multi tasking) and my numerous summers riding the twisties in the Alps. That riding gives me a workout far more intense than any I get locally. Sometimes, its my first ride of the season...scary, ehh?

Riding here hasn't done much for me other that learning to look out for drivers that don't know motorcyclists exist, but that is another topic.

I'll be spending a bit of time in NY, VT and NH this summer. I'll finally get to ride the Kanc.

Yep, it looks like Sunday is going to be the day for the March miles. The driveway is void of snow and just a little slush at the end of the road.

I will make a scouting run in the cager and then, like an old Grizzly emerging from his winter den, the garage door will slowly rise, and the Emperor (that's the GS) will ease out of its winter enclosure and be off! :clap

I plan to return just before hypothermia sets in.

I woke up this morning grinning like a mule eating briars, gonna put some miles on today! Then..... I heard a strange noise on the skylight in the bathroom. Looked outside and it was raining. Raining? What do you mean raining? It hasn't rained in 5 months! Damn, I hadn't planned on inclement weather. So, in the best interest of safe motorcycling, I scrapped the idea of a March 13th ride. However, the temp is still a balmy 38 degrees and if it holds maybe a ride later in the week.

You northern riders can appreciate this....rain on ice makes for hard to see black ice and black ice + motorcycle = broken bones and chrome.

Speaking of winter sucks when it comes to winter road repair, Last week I was driving down m-14 around Plymouth and the road crews were Slopping Asphalt into the craters with mounds left in their wake. Metro Detroits roads, I bet, look no better than the main attack and convoy roads in Iraq, shelled and all. What a poor excuse for repairs. They went to a lot of trouble last summer to delay traffic and cut out the craters and smooth them over with long flat strips of asplalt. They never covered the whole road after, just left the strips. Water=ice=10% expansion in road cracks=road craters. The sight of the road is disgusting and those who made it happen should be ashamed of this pi$$ poor quality of work. Tax dollars wasted!

Our's are ok-good (WI), its depends on the county or local government, You can usually tell the County line sometimes as far as road condition change. Milwaukee roads are terrible.
Also we pave every road, very few are gravel. I'm pretty happy with 'em.
plus we don't charge tolls.

I'm in a pretty rural area, so most of my roads aren't paved, but the main highways are horrible. They have been doing construction for years on just about every main highway in the area and the ones without construction are in about the same shape as the ones you describe. It's treacherous. The backroads, which aren't even blacktop, are usually better than the paved roads.

But, the good news is the construction companies are making lots of money! Now, how do I start a road construction business? :deal

The stuff they shovel into holes(cold patch)is meant to be temporary. It is senseless and wasteful to do a real repair in cold weather. Reject rock would be almost as good but it has no sticky.

I saw a crew yesterday out sealing cracks.(road snakes) I am very familiar with the roads where D'lilah and STRESS live. They are typical for Illinois except for IL Rt.26, which is a remarkably good road for our area. Over-engineered for truck traffic in and out of the gravel pits along the river.

I can't thank the ROUNDERS enough for providing the motivation to keep a bike ready to roll. It makes winter less......wintery.

I agree, Mr. Strickland! We have been fortunate to get out a few times this winter, but are anxious for the Spring. Supposed to be 50's and sunny this weekend, but we have a whole house full of family that we need to get rid of in order to ride. We are thinking of shutting off the electricity about 8:00am on Sunday (you know, we lose our power all the time out in the country ;) )!

Route 26 is a GREAT road, and a pretty ride as well. The rest of the roads are pretty questionable at best! You'll have to give us a call when you're headed out for a ride. We'd love to get together. Plus, one more person from the forum that we will be able to say we met (and you will be able to add 2 to your list).

there.......winter is over. time to ride everyone. get yer butts out to the garage or barn or what have you and fire them puppies up. now. today. do not put it off, do not pass go. do not wait for all the salt to be offen the roads - beemers need salt in their diet just like we do.
this week i made the quality decision to ride every day and i'm gonna do it. sure, it is still in the low 20's morning and night, but it is a sweltering 34 out there right now. the snow queen is securely tied to the hitching post behind the store and i will be on board by 6:25 pm. (heck, there is even sun light left when i leave here at that time.)
spring has sprung - el dookey sez so. let it be so. lah de dah.
the preceeding represents el dookeys foray into modified christian science. if we all will just cease acknowledging "winter" then it cannot be there and therefore cannot interfere with our riding pleasure. send $4.98 for the audio 8 track which explains how you can enjoy perpetual spring time. don't delay...order yours today.

Maybe not exactly a total lack of power, but rather the weather gods reminding you not to mess around. So for next weekend, maybe you need to assure all of us of another snow storm, and the weather gods, thus once again upset, will do the opposite. It's been highs in the 40s, lows in the 20s with wind and clouds for 2 weeks here. A cold wind is blowing today. The forecast looks much like Loraz's. At least we haven't had any snow that stuck (knock wood). We got teased with one high 60s day a couple Sundays ago and then the Alberta Clipper set in. I guess I'll do a little modest riding and futz with the nearly re-assembled airhead in the garage.

I've been re-reading my Proficient Motorcycling books as an antidote for winter and tune-up for spring. Definitely a good thing. This morning a minvan pulled out of an alley directly in front of me; I saw it coming and pulled a panic stop without engaging the ABS. The driver noticed me only when she was completely in my lane, froze and stopped. So I ended up about a foot from her rear quarter-panel. Wouldn't have been as close if she'd just kept going. Ah well.

Thanks Dave.

Three days later I Had the fireplace roaring. Not much riding for me lately due to other reasons than weather but I'm getting ready to do quite a bit. Winter was mild here this year so I rode all through it. I hope this doesn't mean summer will be unusually hot. The regular summers here are enough to make me want to park the bike for two months.
As for road condition, I almost wish we had frost-heaving here. Then they'd repave more than once a century. As is, the stuff never gets busted up by ice so it has plenty of time to get worn down to a high state of polish. Inner Dallas can be as dangerous in wet weather as more northern places in icy weather. I lowsided a K100 on dry pavement going 10mph because of the smooth-worn surface a few years ago.

i got dooked upon. i made my bold declaration declaring the end of winter and what......how many inches of snow clog my drieway this morning???? two, maybe three. once again my total lack of power is plain for all to see.

High of 61 yesterday, high of 55 expected today and about 50 Saturday and Sunday. Couldn't ride yesterday, didn't get home until 9:00pm. Now, how do I get rid of the guests this weekend so we can at least get a ride in on Sunday? El Dookey can you put a spell on them for me? It worked for the weather. :D

Y'know, after mounting up Mark11LT's tires today, I took the old ones out to the dumpster and figured I'd shovel the snow by the back door. Out there in T-shirt-n-jeans only and 18F didn't feel all that bad!

Speaking of tires. I just replaced the ones we mounted last fall. what's up with that. Found a patch of cord on me rear. Stood around the dealership waiting for them to be mounted and almost had a new GS follow me home. I took all of the responsible adult precautions like wearing a t-shirt, shorts and flip flops so I wouldn't be tempted to ride but I got seduced anyway.

Sunday it got back up in the 40s and I had a chance to bring the bike out of hibernation if only for a short ride. High was only 37 and rain today. The good news is that tomorrow is in the 50s and the next few days should be too, looking very forward to getting in some miles. :clap

This was always the time of year that lead me to despair in New England. Rain. 40F. Days of it.

But in a month or so, the trees will come out and it'll all be so green it'll make your eyes hurt.

Well, the snow we got on Saurday is pretty much gone, rode Sunday, took Punkin' to work Tuesday. On Wednesday got suited up to go to work and Punkin' wouldn't start. The airhead is being reassembled following paint, so took the truck. Investigation shows the fuel pump died, so a new one is on the way. I guess while I wait I can get the fairing wired back up on the airhead and maybe get it running this weekend.

Thanx, folks! After the first thousand they all tend to blur.

As a follow-up to the fuel pump, I took the old one over to my shop today and, just for grins, connected to a battery charger. Heard and felt a little hum from the motor, then saw residual gas bubbling out of the discharge. Disconnected, figured it could have made for an exciting ride if things had been just a leetle different.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled thread.

The weekend snow didn't show up until Saturday night around 11 P.M. By 10:30 Sunday night 14 inches of wet heavy sticky crap and counting.

Forecast for the week: 8"-12" more between now and Thursday. Man I love this place in the Springtime. :clap

However, It sure made hiding the eggs easy....Just threw them off of the deck and didn't even have to dye them. :thumb

Every winter I seem to suffer an incredibly uncomfortable feeling of wanting to get the bike out and ride until my heart is content. However this year was much different for me. I can only attribute the lack of this feeling from being able to ride my snowmobile a few times a week. While twisting my way through the pristine trails of Northwestern Wisconsin and Northeast Minnesota I often feel as if I could be ridding my cycle. Leaning into a corner remembering to keep my inside arm stiff, choosing the right apex, I almost imagine I am on a GS cruising through the woods.
There is not much snow left in my neighborhood right now. However, a two-hour drive north to Grand Marais, MN and there is still three to four feet of snow. I will be heading up there later this week. And until we get a good hard rain to wash all the sand that has accumulated in the roads in the city where I reside, I will keep on sledding.
Sick of winter? Not this year. Thank you Mother Nature

But we do tend to complain about the heat and humidity around July/August.

When I finally decide to move out from Alaska I plan to put my snow brush on the dashboard and leave the engine block plug dangling from the bumper of my cager and drive south until somebody has the nerve to ask me "Hey, what's that brush thingy on your dash and that plug doohicky on your bumper used for?" Then, I will know that I have arrived at my new home. :clap

Who knows, when I get there, Key West may even be considered "Up North" :thumb
