I have a 1982 R100RT with a strange ignition problem. The bike starts fine but after warming up (20-30 mins) the ignition system dies. The local BMW shop guys thought it was the ignition module. I on my third module now, same problem. Any ideas?
Thanks!!!

I would respectfully request the parts changers that are working on your bike got off their as*es and find out what is causing the modules to die. Possibly a bad connection or short to ground in the ignition system. There is a difference between changing parts only to have them die again, and actually addresing the problem. I would insist that they give you a free module until the find the source of the failures. It is bull crap to have to keep spending that kind of money when it will happen again .

A little trick.
The next time your ignition quits, pull over and do the following test immediately while in a safe location.
Pull the right ignition cap off the spark plug.
Insert a spare spark plug into the ignition wire cap.
Hold the casing to the cylinder head.
Turn the ignition switch to ON.
Flick the kill switch ON and OFF repeatedly.
Do you see a spark? If so, your ignition coil and module are fine. Your ignition sensor (Hall effect coil) has failed.
If you don't see a spark, it might be the coil, module, sensor or wiring.
To make sure it hasn't fixed itself by cooling off while you do this, put everything back as it was and try to start the motorcycle. If it fails to start, then you likely have found your problem. No, this doesn't mean you should go off and buy an ignition can ($$$). Test it to double check it.
Needless to say, check all the connectors under your gas tank. Those pins within the connector housings need to be opened up with an awl every once in a while to get a good contact. I know this from experience.
If the shop has been charging you to "replace parts" (any yahoo can do that....diagnosing is the art), they should refund you your money.
