View Full Version : What modifications have you done?

I assume that most of you guys/gals that purchase a new BMW motorcycle are so happy with it that you never have to make any modifications to it at all. You just hop on and ride off into the sunset like happy campers. I mean what could you modify on such an excellent brand of motorcycle? Well, I guess some of you could splash on some chrome if you have one of those R1200 jobs. But what else could you possibly spend money on?
When I first bought my R1150GS I didn’t think I would need to buy anything else except a little premium unleaded gas and items for maintenance. This was my first BMW and also my first bike I’ve had in quite awhile (that’s my excuse, and I’m sticking to it).
So as I was driving my new bike home from the dealer, I immediately noticed that 1st gear was a bit too tall. Then after a few highway miles, I noticed my head was constantly bobbing around. My butt didn’t start getting sore till I was almost home. As I was crawling off my new pride and joy, I also noticed that there was a distinct pain in my shoulders and a very tense place in the lower part of my neck. But I was a very happy camper. Then I went across the street to show off my new bike to my Harley friends and they said the bike was too quiet! Duh! Well, that’s coming from Harley people.
Well, a few thousand dollars later, I now have a new lower final drive, a pope-mo-bile windscreen, heated corbin seats, ricky pro-taper handle bars, pia driving lights, two brothers exhaust system and probably a couple things I can’t even remember. But, I’m a very happy camper with my bike. Well, o.k., I might get a set of ohlin shocks next year.
So finally, my question. What different modifications have you guys/gals done to your bikes? And I’m interested in all models here, not just a GS. I might buy a different model sometime in the very far future and I just want to see what I might be looking forward to. If you got a GS, then maybe there’s something I’ve forgot!

I'm the third owner of mine. It came with:
Ohlins shock
Corbin Seat
Tall parabellum
I've added:
Running lights F/R
Enhanced brake light (Kisan flashing light)
Front fender extender
Progressive front springs
Replaced tall parabellum for short
Replaced handlebars to late K100 style with weights and heat
Sta-in-tune muffler (used)
Wow, I have definitely spent too much money on this thing.

I have an '03 1150GS. To date I have the system bags, tank bag, cylinder protection tubes, PIAA 520's (due to the totally inadequate stock lights), 100 watt high bulb to replace factory 55W. Corbin heated seats with rear back rest.
I am next going to add an aftermarket windscreen.
Oh, and I also had the local Sign Pro add "Ole Yeller" to the tank, and I go in tomorrow to add "Block Heads Rule!" to each system bag.
I know the lettering may not be traditional BMW, but it's my bike and I'll red neck it out if I want too. And that's exactly what I told my wife.
Here's a link to my photo album on Ofoto, showing the
'76 R90S I have been building:
http://www.ofoto.com/I.jsp?m=30502374103.67887770903&n=1562122508
You'll need to register, but it's free.
This bike is a kind of "test mule", for practice in
the riding position anticipated on the Special that
Dick Casey is building from an '81 R80 G/S.
I did about everything I could to this bike without
changing the basic arrangement of frame, forks, and
motor. It's not a restoration; in fact it's guaranteed
to upset the purists.
First is the /7 frame. It's stiffer, and I like that.
It carries aluminum side braces, a rear frame cross
brace, big tube swingarm, Raask rearset controls
installed in the passenger peg holes, 10mm subframe
mounting screws, and Works aluminum shocks. The front
end features Craig Vechorik's stainless fork brace,
Braking floating discs, Progressive springs, 10 weight
Spectro fork oil, deep aluminum top clamp, and braided
stainless hydraulic lines.
The cockpit is much changed: I took off the R90S
fairing and handlebars. New bars are Pro-Tek clip-ons,
which are pretty comfortable. I made a new instrument
mounting bracket to tuck the cluster in tight to the
top clamp, and made some headlight mounting plates to
lower the headlight. There is a vintage flyscreen
above the headlight and Hella bar-end signals in the
bars. Bumm mirrors do the rear-view duty, mounted in
the stock position.
When I bought the bike I took it to Hansen's BMW in
Medford. They rebuilt the motor (at 105,000 miles)
with these changes: 336 cam; offset cam key; flowed &
ported, big valve heads w/ ti valve retainers; Dyna
dual-plug ignition; Malossi intake velocity stacks;
and Hoske mufflers with the baffle knocked out.
Crankcase breathing is handled by a K&N breather. I
put in a oil cooler, meaning that I had to change out
the filter housing, with Oak's help, in order to fit
the thermostat.
Power delivery goes through a lightened flywheel,
stock clutch with a spacer behind the spring, and a
new transmission from the BMW catalog. This bike
shifts VERY well even with the extra-long linkage.
The wheels are pretty special: Buchanan's made them
for me with deep-section rims. The front is a 18"-2.15
with a Dunlop GT-501F. The rear is an 18"-3.0 rim,
laced offset so I can fit a 130-80 Dunlop GT501.
I cut down the front fender somewhat. The seat is an
aftermarket item that I worked over. The saddle was
upholstered by NBI, who did a great job. I made the
LED tail light to fit a lens I bought on ebay. Paint
is '78 R100RS gold in honor of my brother Nels'
fantastic crowd-pleasing bike.
Jettisoned the centerstand, side covers, steering
damper, rear turn signals, clock, and ammeter.
Ooooohhh, it runs nice. And sounds fabulous! There's
no lack of bottom end, and above 5K rpm it takes off,
fast enough to ALMOST keep up with my brother's Suzuki
Bandit 1200S.
At least he doesn't disappear on the horizon.
That's the story. Hope you enjoy the photos.
Later,
Jon-Lars Sorenson

I've put 17K on the bike (1150gs) in one year, including one trip across the continent.
Only mods: light upgrades (not optional on a gs, you gotta do it),
throttle lock, sheepskin seat rag.
That's it. Works for me.

I just bought my '96 R850R in April (4.5k on it already with the wet spring we have had) it came with motolights and bmw windshield, and givi bags. I have added nelson rigg's cruiser tankbag, and new headlight, bright blue/bright white. I also purchased a chatterbox intercom and an mp3 player for tunes, which I decided I didnt need on the bike. I would like to try the national cycle touring windshield, and some sheepskin seat covers. :thumb

we believe modifications are of the devil. Fer instance you got all them men becoming women and what not - that my friends is where the slippery slope of modifications can take you.
One minute you are installing an Uncle Remus exhaust extender valve cover nodule and the next you are signing up for a gender change or something.
Stock rocks.
When I find myself asking WWJDrive, I know in my heart of hearts (by the burning in my bosom) that He would modify not.

I have an '02 R1100S I bought used..it's my first BMW.
I have done the following meager things....
1. Replaced the stock "seat" with a Corbin. A most wise decision and a thrifty one, too since I got it on EBAY. My butt is still thanking me.
2. Put an accessory extension cord leading out from the battery so I can hook up a maint. charger without spending an hour taking off the fairings for access!
3. Ripped out the stock headlight bulbs and replaced them with Sylvania's Silverstar HP bulbs.
4. Put in a K&N air filter (that will out live me probably).
5. Clear turn signal lenses replaced stock amber ones. I'm still on the fence with whether or not to keep foolin' with the tail light LED/ clear lens ass'y (see my post in the Oilhead section) or keep the orig bulb/red lens one in place.

I like my silverstar headlight. Have you noticed any improvement?
mcholt212
06-22-2004, 07:33 PM
I first started using Silverstars in a Chev p/u I had..sold it and bought a Mits Diamante....I'm such a freak that I took the bulbs OUT of the truck before selling it so I could put them in the Diamante!!!! I would not go go back to any other bulb. I've tried alot of bulbs in the last 3 years...trying to get that HID look w/o dropping huge bucks. Silverstars not only LOOK good, they actually do throw more light down than their predecesor, Sylvania's Cool Blue. 2 days after I got my S I was online ordering high and low beams for it. For us poor folk who spent all our money just buying our bikes and now we have nothing left for HID upgrades, the Silverstar is the closet thing you can get to the real deal!:lol

I've added a bunch of stuff to my 1150 RT such as Autocom, Bill Mayer saddle, Motolights, push to talk switch etc, but the one cool modification that you may not have heard about is built in running rear lights for the RT.
The RT has a single center red tail light/brake light that's always on while running. The two bulb sockets on the outside turn signals are a single stage where the lights are either off or flashing when the turn signal is on. By switching those sockets to the sockets that are made for the K1200LT outside rear lights, the outside lights on the RT will stay on and still flash for turn signals just like the LT.
Here's the unbelievable part: Those sockets from the LT cost about $2 each at the BMW parts counter.
The LT socket might need a slight filing to fit in the hole on the RT, but it works great!

They're a stock BMW part. Just order them from your local dealer. They raise the bars about 2" or so.
If you're crafty, you might be able to find someone that wants to trade the low bars for the comfort bars. Try the IBMWR marketplace at www.ibmwr.org.

Adventure 30 liter gas tank
Touratech panniers
PIAA 910 driving lights
PIAA 1400 fog lights
Touratech steering stop protector
Givi windscreen
Aeroflow windscreen (swap these two around as needed depending on season)
Touratech panniers

Wunderlich tall seat
Touratech GPS V mount on RAM base (for Pro Tapers)
Speedo drive replacement (reduced error)
Gerbring heated jacket
Ricardo's pro-tapers but removed these last week due to problems with my wrists (I spend waay too much time on computer keyboards etc.)
In the tankbag I have an Autocomm system and a Sirius satellite radio.
On the handlebars I run a Garmin GPS V

I bought the Audiovox SIR-PNP2 with the auto kit. The docking unit has a built in FM transceiver. Currently I leave the receiver in the tankbag and have a small Sony walkman FM radio hooked up to the autocom which I use for listening. The receiver antenna is placed in the tankbag map pocket. I went for this model due to the bigger controls on it which is easier to handle with a gloved hand. I will work on a mounting system etc. once I have more time to look at it. Current workload forced me to go for a quick and dirty solution. It works great, I did two 750 mile days with non-stop music / news / commedy etc.
I looked at both options (both XM and Sirius) and price wise they work out pretty much the same as far as sbuscriptions are concerned. The only thing that really drove me to Sirius was the channel line up.

It is best to look for parts on IBMWR.org http://www.ibmwr.org/ or put an advertisement in the Flea Market http://www.bmwmoa.org/ownersnews/fleamarketsubmission.htm. The current approach is to try and keep the forums noncommercial as there are other tools out there that already do a great job.

So finally, my question. What different modifications have you guys/gals done to your bikes?
Not so much modifications, but additions to both my R1150 GS Adventures...
- BMW System Cases and Mounts.
- Giva E52 Maxi top case mounted on an owner fabricated GiVi custom topcase mount (http://www.bmwmoa.org/forum/showthread.php?t=17518).
- 3M High Grade Prismatic Reflective Sheeting (http://edelweiss.smugmug.com/gallery/6232040_VS6Bw#393360218_wchtp) was installed behind the reflectors of my GiVi E52 Maxia top case.
- Hella FF50 driving lights mounted on a TerraNova light bar.
- AutoSwitch (http://www.bmwmoa.org/forum/showthread.php?t=8669) and Blue Sea Systems 5025 fuse block (http://www.bmwmoa.org/forum/showthread.php?t=8659).
- custom installation of a RAM Ball (http://www.bmwmoa.org/forum/showthread.php?p=118049#post118049) to mount my Garmin GPS and various other RAM accessories. I installed a 2nd RAM Ball (http://edelweiss.smugmug.com/gallery/6232466_hj9cz#393390675_nwgtB) so that I could also attach a camera.
- Datel LCD digital voltage panel meter (http://edelweiss.smugmug.com/gallery/7261107_z4apt#466706719_xovAp).
- YUASA Battery Analyzer (http://edelweiss.smugmug.com/gallery/7392858_UXrck#475610646_hMaWX) attached to the battery to facilitate charging and hook-up of my Gerbings electric gear.
- cigarette lighter outlet for powering electronic devices.
- digital ambient air temperature gauge (http://img369.imageshack.us/img369/6026/digitalthermometer6xe.jpg).

- 3M Stone Guard applied to the frontal surfaces of those nice anodized GS Adventure forks.
- oil radiator bug screen owner fabricated out of black fiberglass screening.

I recently changed bikes, ok 2 1/2 months ago, and transferred most of the stuff from my 04 RT to my 05 LT.
Sofar I have done;
Motolights,
Piaa 910 on BMR brackets under the mirror,
Sylvania Silverstar bulb on low beam, H9 doesn't exist yet,
Autocom,
GPS,
Electronic deerwhistle, flame me but it saved my Heiney twice. :clap
These previous items came from my 'old' bike.
New stuff added;
Rick Meyer seat, soon to be here I hope,
BMR luggage shelf, had one on the RT and it rocks :thumb
XM radio.
That will be all too as the LT is pretty loaded as is :D

The only mod I put on the R1100RS that I bought new in 1994 was a taller windscreen. I think most riders personalize their bikes to varying degrees.
BTW, my former bike was exactly like Kbasa's pilfered RS.

Hmmm. When I was buying the new bike to replace the wreck, I made a to do list to get it ready to ride. Usually these things evolve, but not this time. I was getting the same model, a K12RS. I was a bit surprised how much work I had to do. And my Ortho Doc was a bit surprised how dirty my cast was.
Bike had heated grips and cruise control eliminating 2 things I needed to do.
Airhawk (that was easy)
2 sets of driving lights (wow look at all those wires)
Gerbings back-up power supply (battery connector)
Widder back-up power supply (battery connector)
Additional power outlet
Shelf for radar detector
Power cleanser (for the next item)
CB
CB no ground plane antenna
Wiring for Autocom
Held waterproof tank bag
EZ Pass (placement important)
Hyperlights

Non-Mod ergo's:
Lower bars
To do yet:
Givi top box, had one on the old bike.
Tank bag electrification kit (salvaged from old bike)
Maybe one day:
Shocks, wilbers or Ohlins

Lets see...
on my 73 r60/5
I've scraped the valve covers
(at 80K) modified the valves to burn oil
bent the side stand so it leans WAY over when used
threw away the nasty old airbox and stuffed some K&N filers on the carbs
bent the frame (ever ever SO slighty) no wait, it came that way..
had someone mangle the rear fender so I could duct tape it back on
put a 2-into-1 Mac exhaust on it after the headers rusted thru
changed the oil once ( I think :dunno )
painted the valve covers with BBQgrill paint ( to hide the scrapes)
and modified the odometer so it now reads a higher number than before it broke.
put a set of R90s bars and R90s fairing on it
air shocks on the rear that were lying about my mech's shop
Front end rebuild ( even used NEW parts for this, a first for me!)
replaced the timing chain with a couple of REALLY thick rubber bands (much much quieter now!)
other than that not much that I can think of
:D

On a frame up restoration of a hard ridden bike with 120K miles I have strayed from factory specs as follows:
New paint (Black w/ Orange double stripes)
R12C roundels
Corbin Seat
Pia 595 driving lights
400W charging system
Wilber Shocks
Progressive springs
Heated grips
Police front fender
Epco sport mufflers (ceramic coated titanium gray)
Spiegler brake rotors (on black powder coated carriers)
Spiegler brake lines
Gel Battery
Wudo handle bars
Black powder coated wheels (w/ rims polished), fork lowers (w/ front rib polished) diferential (w/ round accent polished) valve covers (w/ ribs polished), starter cover (w/ BMW polished) and alternator base (w/ ribs polished)
Also Bob's upper triple clamp.

1995 R100R
Stuff the previous owner did:
*S-fairing
*Heated grips
*GS hand-fairings
*Progressive fork springs
*Instrument cluster painted to match bodywork
*Air pump system removed
Stuff I did:
*400W alternator
*Gel battery
*Motolights
*Rewired heated grips to run from battery instead of low beam curcuit (would love to give a piece of my mind to whoever wired them that way!)
*Personalised license plate (BAT BYK)
*Relocated license plate with one-off aluminum bracket
*Motorrad Elektrik 52-LED tail light
*Larger main & idle jets
*Rick Mayer seat
Stuff I'm thinking of doing:
*Get heads ported, maybe larger valves &/or dual-plugged. Maybe get expert work done as a package of several mods.
*Taller 5th gear
*Replace heated grips with better ones, and improved handgrip rubbers
*New windscreen with Laminar Lip
*Eliminate fuel filler flap
*Aftermarket rear shock
*Convert rear brake from drum to disc (MAYBE- benefit may not be worth trouble & $$$- and drum does a pretty good job anyway)
*Eliminate exhaust collector box with Y-pipe
*Different muffler?
*LED enhancement of turn signals
*Maybe swap big goofy rear mudguard for hugger?
*Swap trimmed S-fairing dashboard for intact one w/voltmetre, clock, accessory switches, place to mount toll-tag, etc.
*Second fusebox & relay-board for accessories
*MAYBE repaint in metallic black with pearl-white pinstripes?
*MAYBE acquire & modify a second rear subframe with a sportier, rackless
look, maybe with tail cowl, to use when not touring?
*Steel-braid brake line
*Speed Bleeders
*Opaque material inside upper surface of front turn signal lenses so I don't get blinded by them at night
*Dual horns
*Sexy bit of crumpet for the pillion (now taking applications!) :bliss
I'm sure I'll think of some more stuff too.

rob - are you sure two GPS units are enough? ;)

Gee I sure hope so. :brow
Remember that we are talking setting up for the Iron Butt Rally which is a timed event.
Here are my reasons for two GPS units.
For me one of the primary functions of the GPS is to track time. IMO the most important number is overall average rate of advance. So long as the GPS is never turned off it will tell you that over a period of time your net average speed is xx. While I am not there yet, the best rally riders can look at a map and quickly determine what their average speed will be from point a to b including stops for gas, rest etc. Having this number accurately calculated and displayed means that so long as you are on your planned route you can see quickly if you are ahead or behind of your estimate. For example to do a Saddle Sore 1000 (1k miles in 24 hrs) you need to have an average of 42mph over the 24 hrs. If your magic number is reading 40 you need to speed up, if the number is 42 you have a good cushion. FWIW, the overall average for IB riders is in the mid 40's for the 11 days.
While both GPS units will be powered from the bike regardless of key position, the V takes batteries so if I need to remove it from the bike, disconnect the battery etc. my time calcs will remain accurate. The V will also be sending out data.
For pure navigation the V is limited by small screen size and most of all 19mb of internal memory with no way to expand. There is no time to upload maps during the rally.
The 2610 has the capability of holding the entire country, has a nice screen and while it will handle all the time functions of the V, it does not take batteries, which makes it unsuitable for tracking the magic number.
So, I will keep the V on for the data screen where I display time of day, average speed moving, time moving, time stopped, current speed and sunset.
The 2610 will always display maps, time to next turn and time to destination.
Yes I could do all this from one unit but I also need the data feed which can come from either unit. I want this aspect badly enough that some redundancy is in order.
There ya have it.
Best,
Rob

Sorry you couldn't make DVD!
Greg,
The Touratechs do fit with the tank correct? Is there some movement of the tank between empty and full?
The bars that came with the bike will not work with the Touratech tank plus the welds at the top aft mount were broken. Max noted that this is a known failure point with the stock adventure carshbars.
I was really looking forward to DVD, although given that I would have camped next to Kbasa (and been flooded too) and the weather wasn't good enough to have provided the necessary escape from the frozen N.E. I am happy to have saved the $$$ for another trip west. I would really like to come out for a weekend of camping or if it could work the 49'er.

'O2 1150 GS. My love.
Swapped stock screen for Adventure screen...
then added Tobinators. (They work)!
Since I don't ride off-road anymore, I changes to
changed to 17" rims. Better choice of tires and the
handling (already great ) is even better. It runs on Metzler Z6's.
New wheels meant matching front and a rear fender.
Took off the Mudguard.
Tried a StaIntune system. OK. Sold it and put on a Remus.
Throttle a bit more responsive even at higher speeds. Bit more
sound. Very pleasant.
Had a Bill Mayer seat made for a 4 Corner ride. Not pleased. He and I have talked and he'll do whatever he'll do. Did find a solution that seems to suit...
remound seat mounts and added a 1/2" bar/spacer that seems to raise the seat in front a bit. Now the stock seat is firm but quite comfortable.
PIAA mounted on GTM brackets. Very clean install and lots of light at night.
Also added some sort of high intensity brake light/license plate thing.
XM Radio is great. SkyFi with MixIt drive custom ear bud speakers from E.A.R. Sound is great.
Added Kissan Signal Minder. It keeps the green signal lights on full time.
Bothered me at firsty. Now it doesn't.
Stebel compact dual airhorn is really a horn+.
Use a Wunderlich expandle/removable pack in place of passenger seat.
Only use the system cases on a longer trip. Little bag on handles bars and on
back rack.
Love this motorcycle.

I just put the EZ-pass on MY K12GT. Wow, AlanZ, sure quite a few gadgets for a "C"ruiser, maybe you forgot you purchased a "C"ruiser and not a R/L"T"ourer. Does anyone think that perhaps, some of these toys could be more of a hazard then asset? I happen to think that the distractions caused by all these gadgets may be more hazardous than the whole mess is worth. Most of us already have our sense of hearing vastly attenuated by full face helmets, and now adding Ipod's and Sat radio's, etc, which ultimately take that sense completely out of the situational awareness equation. Motorcyclists are already at a disadvantage to other vehicles, why make it more........? <vbseg>

I can hear things just as well with my sat radio playing in the cage or on the bike. If I didnt have tunes, I would go nuts traveling across the plains on my bike.
Just dont let the radio and the other geegaws take away from your attention to the road.

'92 K75S came with a ripped Corbin, Staintune exhaust, & Performance rear shock.
Since taking possession, I've added:
PIAA 1100x fork-mount driving lights
Heated grips
Aeroflow windscreen
New Corbin Gunfighter saddle
Replaced after-market mirrors with new stock mirrors
New side stand
Kisan headlight modulator
Hyper-lite rear brake enhancement
Dual FIAMM horns (one high tone, one low tone)
New radiator and fan
Accessory plug
I've also replaced various screws, nuts, bolts, clips and other hardware that have fallen off over the past 16 years the bike has been around.
I tried adding "bar backs" but discovered I'd also need a new front brake line. Decided I didn't want bar backs that badly so I returned them. Since then I've gotten used to the "stock" riding position and am very comfortable on the bike.http://dvandkq.net/images/20061231-001.jpg

I purchased an '04 RTL in March. So far I have:
Ohlins Shocks
Bar Backs
Throttlemeister
Autocom W/phone, gps and GMRS
Givi 52 with toprack and backrest pad
Wheelin TIR3 brake light
Garmin GPS
3 Function Meter
Big Mak Tank Bag
Peg Lowering Kit
Passenger Peg Lowering Kit
Sargent Low Seat
HID headlight conversion
Cee Bailey’s Headlight Protector
Motolights with 50W conversion
Powerlet Adaptors
Mirror Cables
New Odessey Battery
New Marathon Tires
BMW Logo Valve Caps
Bushtec Trailer Hitch
2 Bros complete system. (Took back off though….)
What I have determined is that owning a BMW is kind of like owning a boat. You just seem to throw money at it for some reason.
On a side note, I hate the Sargent seat. The 2 Bros pipe is stupid loud. The HID conversion is awesome. The motolights where awesome until I did the HID conversion and now they sort of dissapear in the headlights output. And I do not like the Ohlins as much as I liked the Wilbers on my last bike due to a more abrupt response on sharp bumps. But, they where cheaper....

What have I added to my R1200CL? Let's see:
Garmin Quest GPS
Alaska Leather Sheepskin Butt Pad
Icon Urban Tank Bag
MOA Sticker on the windshield
Me with a big freakin' smile
What was added by the previous owner?
Z-Technik luggage rack on the top case
Thermometer on the right side of the dash
Flashing LED brake light
Lots of black reflective tape
Chrome engine and luggage guards
An extra inch of stuff welded onto the side stand to make lifting it off easier.
Do I have a wish list? Yeah, I do. I'm thinking I might want:
Either a Parabellum or Cee Bailey windshield (so far, I'm not a fan of the M shape of the stock windshield)
Bar backs (we'll see how I hold up on a long ride)
Who knows what else.

Wow, Quigly,
That's a classic post. In a few paragraphs it nails exactly what is wrong with BMW.
Before the flames start let me say that I am a really long-time BMW fan.
I will maintain my BMWMOA membership (#101) to honor my former enthusiasms,
I will probably move from new Beemers to antiques. But I will never again
buy a new one.
Too big, too tall, too expensive to retrofit to ride comfortably if you are
not the size of a Prussian Grenadier Guard.
Look through posts here and see the bikes that are suggested for the
vertically impaired: The Cruiser and the F650CS...neither bike is made
any more! I have owened, in my aging lifetime, seven BMWs (some
hacked, some solo) but the most recent Beemers are an F650CS and
my recently hacked 1990 K75.
I owned a Harley once...an flhtc... and it was pefectly comfortable and
dead reliable until it was stolen. Never Owned a Beemer that was as
easy to do 700 mile days on.

I ride them bone stock (well OK, my 93 GS has a steel braided brake line)
A lot of you seem to have another motorcycle, at least dollar wise, added in the form of accessories to your machine. Yes my seat can get uncomfortable, so I just swing home and pick a different bike, problem solved,
I was thinking about buying a Road King earlier this year. I was going to make sure it was a really rare one. I wasn't going to bolt on a buch of chrome doodads. See many stock HD's?

When I picked up "Maureen", an '04 RT, from the previous owner, the only non-stock items with the bike were an Odyssey battery, a throttle rocker and a saddle bag helmet lock.
I have discarded the throttle rocker and the helmet lock-hook-thing and added:
Bobs Wrist Rest
Helmet lanyard with padlock
Chicane Baja XL tank bag
Garmin c330 GPS
RAM mount, arm and cradle for GPS
Saddle bag liners (off EBay, don't remember the brand)
Diamond plate steel side stand disk with lanyard
Bungee Buddies (not yet mounted)
Roadgear digital tire pressure gauge/tread depth gauge (rally door prize)
New Metzler front tire when needed (also rally door prize, thanks Jim at Neds!)
Some other farkles are on my wish list, but I am going to refrain from further purchases until the National.
I need an excuse to troll the vendors, don't I? ;)

Nice, I like the blue. I'm considering a GPS for my ST, maybe you could send me a few more details on the PIAA's and Garmin via a PM ?

There are a few things that many owners seem to do that BMW should take note of:
Seats
Enhanced lighting
Side stand feet
Handle bar adjustments
Comm systems.
Mounting system for other electronics
I find the handle bar issue very frustrating - just cannot get them to be comfortable - now bought 3 at +/- $90 a pop. I would suggest an adjustable bar of some kind.
