On my 85 K100RT one of the four mounting ears is broken off of the main fairing body. The threaded metal insert is not exposed so there is plastic to plastic contact on both surfaces to be joined.

Can any answer the following questions about this fairing.

1) What type of material is the fairing made from? ABS Plastic, Fiber Glass, Etc..

2) Can a body shop repair this?

3) Is their a type of glue that I can purchase and repair this myself?

4) Other suggestions?

Thanks

1> It's a fiber-filled resin that can be fiberglassed to.
2> A body shop can do it.
3> Here's the short tour if you want to try it. Scuff the area around the piece and the piece itself to give the glass resin better bite. Cut a section of fiberglass mat (cloth ok, mat better) 1+" bigger all around. Orient the fairing body so the glass area is level as possible. Put RTV (silicone caulk) in the threaded insert. Mix up the glass resin, soak the mat, wet the area, put the piece in place & cover with mat. Chip out, or Dremel the threaded opening out & pull RTV plug. Good Hunting... <<<)))

First, I'll always defer to "Custom Sarge"

But:

Having had to have "repairs" done to an '85 K100RT fairing in the past, I would advise making sure all the mounting hardware hasn't "sacrificed" itself during whatever act damaged the fairing.

Mine was only a four inch "crack" from a "Tommy Tipover" - and the insurance company picked up a tab in excess of $2500.00! Repair to the upper fairing (actually replaced with a used one because of cost, with my concurrence) was the "cheapest" part of the bill. All the mounting hardware needed to be replaced and some other "body work" accomplished.

Knowing that sometime you might be temped to check the 135 mph limit (on a closed course), not having to deal with strange handling is always nice.

Thanks Custom Sarge, since I have know experience with fiber glass and really do not need another hobby, I think this is going to the local body shop.

Don, I have removed all of the mounting hardware and I can't see any signs of damage. I took the actual mounting braket off of the bike to use a pattern for mounting the broken ear. All of the bolts and the broken ear all line up with no force required.

I do appreciate the advice from both of you.

Thanks

I had a similar problem with the attaching point of the fairing on my 79 R100RT. I got the tip to use rifle bedding compound, namely Brownells Acraglas to glue the broken off piece back on, from a source that I have long since forgotten. It worked like a damn, and has for the last 3 years. This should be a lpot cheaper then professional help.

Don hit a point that's harder to fix & I missed: mount bracket "skew". The stamped steel mount yoke can be off to one side & still bolt up to the fairing just fine. I "adjusted" one back in line by:
1> put bracket on bike, centered on bolts in neck tube.
2> being a precise as possible, measure the upper & lower bolt points for identical distance to various center points on the frame and to ground. Clamping extensions off the bolt points can help.
3> tweak the bracket until square. If you can't get it square, buy a new one. I wouldn't easily trust a used one. Good Hunting... <<<)))

Custom Sarge

Would all of the other fairing components fit up properly if this bracket was all bent out of shape?

Take a look at this stuff at: www.plastex.net for your fairing repair. It was mentioned over on BMW Sport Touring a long time ago and the writer had good results. Quite pricey though.
