Hello Vintage BMW experts! I have a question about the ChangJiang cj750. Is it comparable in quality, including any replacement parts, to the real thing? I am wondering because I am pondering a trade for a '69 cj750. I would be giving up my '06 Triumph America in return.

My main bike is my '07 R1200R, so I am good as far as everyday transportation and the long trips are covered. I use the America on local rides. Is the cj750 something that would make a good "Sunday rider"? Does this trade make since? It is in very good mechanical condition, and shows only 225 miles. So both bikes are in great shape.

I am wondering about the reliability of the BMW knockoff. Do any of you have any experience with these? Any advice? I appreciate it!

Thanks!

Hey T,
The quality is very poor on the few I have seen. It is a cheaper copy of the Ural with a lot of casting marks in things one would hope were forged. I don't know if any parts truly cross over.
I am sure more have some info, but I ran away from the one I looked at recently...it caught my eye as it was sitting on the side of the road and had BMW emblems on it. Upon closer look, it was a very rough looking bike.

Yes it will be great for Sunday rides.

As long as you enjoy waving to all the Sunday riders as they pass you on the side of the road!!! :laugh

Then you can spend Monday thru Friday getting it fixed for next Sunday!!! :bolt

Rough copy of a BMW design - Good design but bad copy!!!! :doh

My 2 cents worth of opinion!!!!

Thanks for the input! That was kinda what I was wondering about those things. It looks so nice in the pictures...

I studied Chinese at the Defense Language Institute, and have many friends that have traveled there, and they have had a lot of the same opinions about things that were "copied". We all had experiences with the lack of respect for copyright laws, etc.

It was to good to be true, as usual!

Thanks a lot! I am extremely appreciative of your warnings!

Henzilla, hope to see you in a couple weeks at the Llano rally!

I have one bought it several years ago, not the most comfortable bike by a long shot, changed the chinese carbs out for chinese makuni's runs well, brakes are marginal.
overall a lot of fun. I limit it to very short rides.

Actually both models are copied after the WWII Zundapp 750 and very poorly to boot.
