Bock beer was celebrated in Cincinnati every year. It is like crocus and Robins, one of the signs of spring.

They spelled it BACH (no *not* confusing with the composer) in the part of Deutschland in which I used to live. But no matter, it is good.
Even better yet was a special brew that was available in the winter. It was known as DoppelBach-Dunkel (double-dark-darker if you very roughly translate) and the only place in town it could be had was the grimy little restaurant at the train station. One Saturday I went with a couple of buddies up to Stuttgart for an evening of carousing and fruitless hoping but we had to wait for our train. We went into the restaurant and odered a round of DoppelBach-Dunkels. After a bottle each we were all slowly sliding way down in our chairs and wondering if we'd make the train. I glanced over and noticed a table of the typical crusty old guys who seem to hang out at the stations over there- they had a veritable forest of empty DoppelBach-Dunkel bottles between them and they sat quite upright and giggled heartily as they observed us succumbing to the effects of ours.

I feel slightly more at home here in the Bock thread than I did in the Wheat thread. Bock is more my usual swill and there is *nothing* like a really well-done Maibock. I'm picky about them though. Mark, I'm jealous of your keg-conditioned home brew!
Tonight I am drinking "Uff-Da" Bock from (you guessed it) the New Glarus Brewing Company. Here is the description from the label:
"Here is a Bock brewed to appease the Gods of Winter. Hearty and full-bodied, this is a "Big" bier. Brewed in the Reinheitagebot tradition, our Bock comes by its mahogany hue naturally. You can expect this bier to be complex and smooth with deep chocolate and coffee undertones, complementing the rich bouquet. No matter if you choose to enjoy our Bock before, during or after dinner, remember to serve at about 48 degrees F. Because like many good things in life, the warmer Bock is, the sweeter it gets.
Cheers! :yum

When I was a kid I used to swipe my Dad's Pabst Blue Ribbon Bock every Spring when it came out. Had a little picture of a goat on it. Dee-licious!
Oh yes - thank God we're off that wheat p*ss thread, I was about to spew....

"Bock" is often used to mean "goat" in German at least in context of "Sündenbock" which means "scape goat".

Darryl - You wrote a book on beer - you are a GOD!Please, there's no need to give me a swelled head... Demigod will do nicely, thanks. ;-)
Just to pique your possible interests, Bock and Doppelbock have completely unrelated histories, other than they are both linked to Munich. One is a tale of greed, power and envy; the other was developed for use during Lent and Advent.
As Chacifer notes, bock is a German word for billy goat, and there are some fanciful stories about the origin of the name, but it's probably a corruption of the name of the town where it was first created.
Don't forget, April 23rd is Reinheitsgebot Day! (The Reinheitsgebot is the German beer purity law, enacted originally by the Duke of Bavaria in 1516, after an even older Munich town law.)
(PS - I'm a fighting Banana Slug - class of 79)Fight on, mighty Santa Cruz Banana Slugs! My niece just graduated from UCSC. She was on the varsity tennis team.

markGiving a lecture on beer is sort of like a eunuch expounding on sexual technique, don't you think? ;-)
OTOH, it is a dry business, and requires keeping one's whistle wet. ;-)

Reading this thread made me want a beer, so I went out and got myself a Köstrizer Schwarzbier. Delicious!
