Ok engineers out there:

Our Airheads put out approx 50-65 ftlb of peak torque at the rear wheel, or is it engine. Anyways comparing the above torque figures, tightening a fastener at the above specs isnt a whole lot. If say we tighten our output flange bolt less than the desired 165ftlb of torque it will spin slightly and gall the shaft taper. How does engine torque of 50-65 ftlb over come say 100ftlb of tightening torque applied to the output shaft flange bolt. Galling does happen when they arent tight enough, and how does a "lesser engine torque" overcome this. I am puzzled and probably looking at this the wrong way. I would like to hear someones technical opinion, point me in the right direction.

Not having my torque tables with me, but the amount of torque applied to a fastener is that required to exert a given amount of clampling force. This clamping force comes about by the threads actually causing the fasteners to elongate (stretch), and it is that elastic deformation of the fasteners that produce the clamping force. Torque is the amount of twist that is applied. Now, in a lot of applications, this ammounts to greater than 45000lb of clamping force on the fastener. If the torque of the rotating elements exceeds the clamping force, things slip.

Just don't use the old method of torquing - torque it until it strips, then back off half a turn.

I know it's hard to justify $100 + on a torque wrench you will hardley ever use. If anybody is SERIOUS about doing their own wrenching, three torque wrenches is the only way to go.

What was the question? I kan't know.

Snow was gone until 2 hours ago. I imagine you're getting the same. The trans is being put back together. Putting all of the internals in is a piece of cake. Shimming the shafts is a P.I.T.A. for me. Im lacking a depth micrometer, only have a digital caliper with a depth guage. Ive shimmed and pulled the lid off 3 times now. Clymer says the shafts need .05mm end play. Haynes says .1mm end play. I take it that when the cover is on tight, the shims visible on the output shaft should rotate slightly i.e. the end play. I want to get this done right cause I dont want to do it again!!!!!!!

I got off of work at 4am worked on it until 8 am ,its too light outside and I cant fall asleep and have to go back to work at 2pm until 8pm. Did I mention im riding a NyQuil wave......fuzzy. I sent the pipes out to be jet-hot coated should be gettin them next week. having the bike apart for this long is killin me!
So, what you up to?

All our snow was gone until last night and this morning. Other than that, sunny and cold all week. Been getting a day here and there for work.
Fixing dads sno-blower (rebuild), momma's van had a vaccum leak.... took all day to find that.
Going to local BM club meeting,'cycle show looking at the bikes, and doing the auto show.
Since all the rain last week cleaned the streets, have managed to get out and do a few miles. Waiting for the warmth to come so I can prepare the GS with upgrades for the coming riding season. Carbs need rebuilding, new alt brushes, new alt regulator for lower RPM charging, new handle bars (no missing paint),stuff like that.
Trying to keep busy is all. :type
