I am rebuilding the carbs from my 74 R90/6. The bike has 76,000 miles and I am getting very poor gas mileage 32-35 miles per gallon. My thought is to replace the gaskets and update the seals and floats but what about the jets? Someone told me I could get better mileage with a step down from the orginal jets. I know I will loose alittle top end power but how much of an increase in gas mileage will I see?
Has anyone done this? Any sugestions?

I had the same problem with gas mileage years ago on my 73 /5. I went ahead and ordered a complete rebuilding kit from Bing. I also ordered the Bing carb rebuild book.
I did the work myself and the bike ran great. You might want to consider doing the same. Replace every part that is required in a complete rebuild. I do not think you'll be disappointed.
Now this is a fare warning. I did a rebuild on my 40mm carbs for my RS. I did this along with one of my fellow Presidents from the Selected Friends of Wile-E-Coyote. He too has 40mm's on his RS.
Well we started in the morning and worked on mine. We finished just in time for lunch. Well lunch was at the German-American Festival in Auburn Hills,Michigan. Lunch consisted of splitting 4 pitchers of beer, 2 shots of something and knochwurst. We then proceeded back to the grind and rebuilt my friends carbs.
Well my bike ran sooo sweet. My friends bike did not run so well.
The Moral : Do not go to the German-American Festival until you rebuild your carbs.
Another suggestion is to pay the money to Bing and have the pro's do the work. A little pricey but, they do good work. Best of luck to you.

If I remember correctly, the topic was covered by Matt Parkhouse in OWNERS NEWS last year.
