There have been articles about K bike driveshaft splines and U joints in Owners News. There are some specialty shops who will rebuild a K driveshaft with new U joints. I don't remember the names, but others might.

Here's the rub: your current driveshaft has wear on the splines. Assuming your U joints are loose, those splines may have taken a beating as well. So, best advice is to pony up the 400 presidents and get the whole shebang brand new.

I just went through this with my K1 sidecar rig. Scuttlebutt from the K1 guys was that U joints were known to fail (with no warning) at under 50,000 miles. That got me worried, so I pulled everything apart. The shaft and U joints felt good, but I'd feel awfully stupid if I went to all the trouble of pulling it apart and didn't change the shaft, and then had a failure on the road.

So, I've got a used K1 shaft with good splines and U joints that don't have any slop. I believe the K1 shaft is identical to other K shafts, but don't know for sure. If you want it, send me $20 for shipping, and an address, and it's yours for free.

I had my shaft/final drive rebuilt at Bruno's (www.brunos.us).

He did a great job, had a quick turnaround, and he saved me half the cost of new BMW components.

Check out the website for details. :thumb
