I have an LED tail/stop light replacement board for my 78 R100/7 last summer. Want to buy another one for the 91 R100RT I just bought. Can not remember where I got it and can not find my old BMW ON where I believe the add and article was for the LED light. Anybody remember?

Thanks Bob. Got it ordered. Also making auxillary LED tail/stop lights for the bikes.

Direct 1157 etc, also from Digi-Key in MN. www.digikey.com I've made sequential turn signal replacements, for 3 of mine, using a National LM3914. Toughest for me was cutting & fitting the LED array into the stock bezel with the LEDs aimed properly, the circuit is pretty easy. I can email a copy if curious. Good Hunting... <<<)))

I've installed LED taillights on two of my bikes, starting with the R75. Airheads need to conserve all the watts you can. I think LEDs are great. Low current draw, resistance to jolts and bumps, very reliable, and if one diode burns out, the rest keep on shining. I plan to put an LED board in the R100, too.

I wish all BMWs had LED tail and turn lights.

Note I have not installed an LED tail light on the K1, which has a light sensing black box. I suspect it would think a bulb was burned out, and start flashing the big red light on the dash.

All K & R259s have the bulb failure sense relay. They work by sensing the stock bulb amperage, and LEDs are WAY under that. Two options:
1> put a load resistor in parallel with LED, but you have to size & place it for the heat it'll put out: ~15 ohm @ 10W for run, ~7 ohm @ 20W for each brake & turn signal.
2> open up the bulb sense relay & change the sensor strips. It wouldn't have been worth the effort, but I went all LED (exc headlight 'course) on the R11HR.
I'm a big fan of LED arrays & sequentials grab attention. <<<)))

I'll also vouch for the Motrrad Elektrik LED unit. I have installed it on The BatBike and it is very bright (*52* LEDs!) and very well-made. I had the luxury of seeing it before I bought it as I was at Morrrad Elektrik World Headquarters (read: Rick Jones' garage) back in November. I ws impressed at first sight and have not looked back.
Rick also has LED units for Oilheads, and they are even easier to install than the Airhead unit. The Oilhead one isn't listed on his website as yet due to his WebMeister being stuck on an Antarctic icebreaker until May, but they are in stock so give Rick a call if you have an Oilhead.

I'm considering adding LEDS to my turnsignals too. I've heard that just like the bulb-failure sensors, blinker circuits don't like to work if the resistance is not right so I'm planning to keep the bulbs but augment them with the LEDs.

Thank you for all the input. I ordered the LED replacement unit.

Here is one more really slick LED Brake/Tail Light
