The recent Bob's BMW email newsletter had this bit of news:
BMW Oil Price Increase
We've just received a bulletin from BMW to the effect that, on or about March 1st, prices for many BMW oil products are going up on average about 35%!
Bob's is recommending buying oil before March 1st. How long can you store oil?

of course, you could always choose to use something other than BMW branded oils. it's really not a problem- and some are rated better for our particular needs.

Good God! Isn't it expensive enough already? I stopped at the dealer Saturday for some transmission/rear end oil. It was 14.75 a bottle (liter/quart?). I went over to Auto Zone and picked up some Mobil 1 75w90 for $6-something a jug. Enough already!

Walmart and Costco are my least favourite stores as far as shopping there, with all the crowds involved. However their prices can't be beat, if they have what you need :stick .

Oil storage for a decade or longer is no problem so long as it tightly sealed so that moisture can't accumulate in the container.
There any number of superior oils that are FAR less costly. You pay a HUGE premium to have that BMW roundel on the container. For BMW cars, the oil is Castrol oil and packaged by them for BMW. On newer cars it even has a note about using Castrol on the oil filler cap!
I plan on switching to synthetics on my next oil change. I try to stick with "dinosaur" oil until the engine is well broken-in. Then I make the move to synthetics which I feel are superior in many ways, particularly in warm environments with heavy traffic where oil temps may approach the upper limits of conservative operations.

Doesn't this BMW oil work in F650s, Airheads, and K-bikes, too?
This is a "Gear" topic.

Heck my '04 owners manual says BMW recommends Castrol for use. I have used Castrol for years in all my machines, and never had a problem with any oil related failure.

Just so it isn't USA Castrol, of course.

I have put over 200k on 4.3l v6 engines using Syntec with 8k change intervals with no troubles whatsoever. It is a shame that a substandard product such as syntec works so well.

so, that's a metric oil? is there a difference?

There are only a couple of "true" synthetic oils out there anymore, but dinosaur oil technology has improved to the point that they can provide synthetic oil performance. Porsche uses Mobil 1 as OEM oil with a 15K mile change interval. Mobil 1 is no longer a true synthetic. If it's good enough for Porsche, it's likely good enough for a BMW bike.
Bottom line ... you can get a good quality oil for your bike for a helluva lot less than the highway robbery prices BMW charges for its slippery stuff.

Cool...A metric oil!!!...Now if I can find a metric adjustable I'm in business :stick
BMW oil was already outrageously priced. Now it sounds as if it's going to be insanely over-priced.
But....it don't bother me one bit! :D
I've been using MOBIL 1 15w/50 in my '03 RT since mile 1200. :thumb
Can you say $3.39 per qt. at Wal-Mart or Target stores. :clap
For those of you insisting on using BMW oil, I have a 300' long ocean front beach property, w/two-story condo, for sale.....in Colorado. :p :wave
