Hey, Phil
I picked up an Alaskan at the Spokane gathering last year, and strapped it on my '02 1150RT. The ride home to Southern California was a lot more comfortable than the ride up there. Given a choice, I would go for the Alaskan rather than a new custom seat.

Get one, you won't be sorry.

I have one as well. They work exactly as advertised. The only problem that I have with mine is that eventually the nylon strap starts to wear out and will stretch. I usually tighten it up at about every gas stop, but it's no big deal. Also if you stand up at speed the front of the pad will fly up and fold over on itself. Again, not a big problem, but sometimes an annoyance. It's a cheap fix though for a seat problem if you have one.

I didn't have any issues with the OEM "comfort" seat. I like to get off the bike every couple of hours anyways to stretch, eat, drink, etc.

But....I knew that I wanted a backrest eventually. And.....I wasn't going to pay upwards of $300.00 or so, for a bolt-on backrest.

So....I looked to after-market seats. I chose CORBIN for their ease of backrest use. I found a used seat, in like new condition....for $250.00. :clap

Best $$ I've spent in a good while. :thumb

The Alaska Leather sheepskin "buttpad" is the best on the market. Call their 800 number and talk to Barb - she knows BMW's and will set you up with the right item. I have a slightly bigger pad and I tuck the front between the gas tank and the body so it never lifts up with wind, and I am sure Barb would replace a strap which loses its elasticity. Here's mine, in gray:

I too have an Alaska Leather Buttpad, the more expensive one with no seams. It takes out a little of the K100 vibration and is a cooler ride.
The only things I had to add is some clear vinyl to the backside of the clasp so it doesn't wear against the side of seat and some vinyl to the side plastic near the clasps for the same reason.
A well spent addition to comfort.

you can order a replacement strap from them for $4.99.

I got one at the rally last july in Spokane. I also had just put on a new Bill Mayer saddle. It is much cooler with the sheepskin cover. By all means get one, you wont be sorry. PS I rode home to Arkansas with it and it has not come off of the bike yet, an R1150GS

You guys are kind of convincing me to look into one. I currently have a CORBIN saddle, but even the best can be made better. :thumb

I must agree with the rest of the board. The Buttpad was a fantastic inexpensive fix for me as well.

I've heard people talk of bad service with CORBIN. I've called them a couple of times, and I've never been disappointed that I did. :dunno

Is there something that I don't know....or should be made aware of? :brow

I've never had a smooth transaction with Corbin and I can't say that I was overwhelmed with the quality, especially for the price. I owned my own bike shop and I personally owned three of their seats. Delivery was never on time and, God forbid, you ask for anything special like an extra inch for the long legged. "Two more weeks" would turn into 4 months or more. They burned their last bridge when my last seat split just above the stitching at the nose when it was about 7 months old. Their response was, "sure, for $117 we'll take care it... ...just give us two weeks :stick

I hate to sound like a sniveler so let me point out that my last transaction with them was over ten years ago so maybe they've gotten better, but I'm done with them.

Just mention Corbin around the campfire at your next rally, get comfy and listen to the stories. Good and Bad. I have both. Only good one's with Sargent's Seats so far though. :thumb

Initially, I was going to buy (order) a new CORBIN. Price was going to be right about $550.00 or so, the way I wanted it.

Found a used one in like new condition for $250.00. The couple of times I did speak with CORBIN on the phone, they were friendly, personable, and patient with me.....as I had a ton of questions to be asked. :thumb

As far as the build quality of CORBIN goes, I have been very happy with them, as I have two CORBINS......one on my RT and one on my Kawasaki ZRX1200R.

Has anybody had experience with the airhawk seat pads? I see them on various pictures of GS and alike...they seem as though they are comfy.

Phil

Take a look at Hartco International. I have R1100RT with sheepskin pads for both front/back seats. Got them a couple of years ago from BMW Orlando.

They are full coverage not just a pad so look good and don't fall off. Feel great for long trips!

Don't remember what they cost. Might be more, but the full seat coverage is good for looks and feel. Just looked at the website hartcoseats.com--it's not great but has phone numbers.

ps: They are listed in Crescent City FL so might be good for you to deal with.
(Just looked at mine and there is a stamp with the mailing address in Satsuma, FL. Quick--all those who know what a satsuma is raise your hand. :) )

I tried an AirHawk- not bad but kind of a hassle and only added a couple of hours to the day before my butt hurt. Tried sheepskin- not Alaska, another vendor, can't remember name right now but they advertise in ON- and it was nice but still didn't make me really happy. had a Corbin- pretty good when I was riding daily but if I didn't ride for a few weeks it felt hard and the first couple of days and the last week on a long trip were miserable. Bought a Russell and voila!! no more issues with the seat. I ride an R1100RT.

Orange you going to tell them what a satsuma is? Or citrus on your tangerine and keep them guessing? :dunno

I've used a sheepskin pad for more hours than I care to think about. It makes a dramatic difference in comfort both on hot and cold days. If you haven't tried one, even with a comfortable saddle, you don't know what you're missing. Just make sure it's attatched to the bike and won't slide around.

It's just something that's commonplace in Florida. And even though we have a lot of them here, no, it doesn't stand for "fat tourist".

Rather, Orange you glad I told you! ;)

I don’t get it, are you guys all crazy? :hide Why are you spending the extra dough for the deluxe seat pad? :dunno I have an Alaska Leather seat pad with a big seam in it, musta shot the sheep with a 50 cal, it’s so big. I don’t feel it and I don’t feel the pocket stitched on my back of my jeans either. Save your money, your butt won’t know the difference. :thumb

I gotta say you're absolutely right. I probably could have gotten away with the standard pad but I couldn't find one to check out in person to see how much of an affect the seam would have so just to play it safe... I'm sure AlaskLeather would have made it good but I figured why the hassle :dunno

I also bought a seat pad from Alaska Leather, for sure very nice. I was in Cosco one day and "'ell I be" you could get the whole durned sheep skin for $32.00 WAY NICE. I kept mine around for about six months before I cut it up. It was a conversation piece in the office, way fuzzy. You could get about four one piece pads out of one sheep, and to think they died for my aching ass?...
