Well guys I finally went and did it. I closed the deal today. On Saturday I will be picking up a new 2004 R1150RT. I will lpick it up Sat. and on Sunday I am heading to Fla for a week.

I have a question for the BMW gurus. This dealer offers a prepaid maintenance agreement. For $2000 bucks up front he will do all seven services. He said that the services average $300. That comes to $2100.
That doesn't sound like a great savings but he thought it was terrific.

I was hoping to do some of the services myself, but he said that it is necessary to hook up a computor to the RT to run most of the checks.

I have done alot of wrenching during my life but I am not a mechanic and I sure don't have the electronics needed for that.

Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Bill

Congrats on your new scoot!! :thumb I had an 04 RT and loved that machine. I put 26K on it in a year! Being up on maintainance is a good thing. If I may advice you on one thing, it would be to change the oil at 3000 miles also. You will notice that with time and miles the bike will ride better and the engine will smooth out :clap
The prepaid deal is good as long as your dealer is around to do the service :stick
I wish you good riding and keep the rubber down :clap :clap

I don't think it's a good enough deal to trap me (or you) into one BMW service shop. And you CAN do a lot of the stuff yourself, no problem. Just be sure to document it during the warranty period.

If you tour a lot, you're going to find yourself who-knows-where when it comes time for some service. If another dealer is recommended and nearby when that time comes, you're going to want to consider getting it done.

Dunno where you are in PA, but I've got a great dealer just across the line in OH.

Don't go for the "upfront service fee".

Who knows, the dealer you bought your RT from, may not be to your liking, when it comes to servicing your bike. It's been known to happen.

And......much of the servicing can be done by yourself, with the right tech info., and advice from this forum.

A $100.00 savings on a $2100.00 fee is no-big deal in my book.

I'm not sure how long it will take to go through seven services. . . You got a 600 and then a 6,000 mile and then there would still be five more to go. Two or three years?

You'd be parting with 2 grand long term while the dealer is earning interest on your money. I'd say Passadina. Plus everyone's right, there's no telling where you might end up and want an oil change or throttle body adjustment while far from home.

Congrats on your RT. What color is he?

congrats. i have an 04 as well and love it. i would pass on the service deal. i'm not very mechanical but changing the oil, tranny and rear drive fluids is easy. once you learn (and me too) how to adjust valves that's most of the service. make sure you get the 600 mi service performed. plenty of dealers in florida. i live on east coast of florida and have 2 dealers equidistant from here. also, after the 600, ride the crap out of it and watch your oil use. you'll probably be adding some on a frequent basis. :type

Thanks to one and all for the replies. I was nottoo fond of the prepurchased maint agrerement. However, we did cover the fact that I may be in timbuctu when I needed service, and he said they would pay another BMW dealer with pre arrangements. I still don't like it because I do plan on doing some of it myself.

Oh yeah, it is gray. I could have had blue. I really wanted silver but they didn't have that. Just my luck. So since it made no difference blue or gray, I simply flipped a coin and the gray won.

Thanks alot guys

Congrats on the new bike and welcome to a totally different "Lifestyle". Pretty soon your former life will be but a mere blur fading darker and darker with each passing day and you will be wondering to yourself why it took you so long to get here. Your new assignment will be, should you choose to accept it, is to shift from 4th to 5th at 100mph under full throttle as you silently motor past the "loud pipes save lives" riders, grinning from ear to ear knowing full well you've got one more gear to go! Enjoy the ride! :D
