Always loved Pink Floyd!

I felt that the lyrical content was far more consistently dark than the Dead's.

Deadheads love Pink Floyd too. Can never have enough. The Floyd always puts you in another but very familiar place.

The following albums are on my Ipod now!!
Animals
Atom Heart of Mother
Dark Side of the Moon
Meddle
Obscured by Clouds
Pipers at the Gates of Dawn
Relics
The Final Cut
Ummagumma

Dude - Pink Floyd rocks! They live on the Dark Star! I like to put on the bootleg VCD of "Pulse" I got for 2.00 in Kuala Lumpur and rock out after Saturday Night Live. Also think Roger's "In The Flesh" DVD is fan-tas-ti-co.

Any advice - Amazon keeps "reccomending" the DVD "Live at Pompeii" to me. Is it worth buying?

Have Dark SIde on the iPOD and listen to it on long, transoceanic flights.....

It was pretty cool even totally straight !

I watched it years ago and it was very, very good. There's some footage of the band in the studio recording Dark Side.

Also for those with XM radios...Channel 40, Deep Tracks is running a six-part history of the band. Sundays at 6:00 Eastern. Last night covered the early years, how they came together, their early shows in the London clubs.

See if you can find the movie "Obscured By Clouds" which has the soundtrack by PF of the same name. It is a bit dated, but pretty cool none the less. It involves a tour lead by a visionary looking for paradise in a region of New Guinea that is not mapped becaues it is obscured by clouds. Very beautiful scenery. :wave

Have Floyd on the I-Pod!! :thumb As the mood changes, I listen either to classical(my favourite), rock, heavy metal, dance (XM 82) or Jazz.
Eclectic choices for sure, but then again it all depends on my mood :D

I like the album from that. It and Meddle(?) and Wish You Were Here are my favorite floyd albums.

Everytime I hear "Shine on You crazy Diamonds" kicks in a flashback to "high" school, and college. Oh those fun times.....
By the way "Veggie Tale's Silly Songs" aren't bad either.

Does good music pass the "test of time"? I turned 40 this past June and for Christmas bought my 17 year old son "The Wall" movie. He loved it, as I did back in the early 80's. The movie had been re-mastered and the sound was awesome.

I sailed my 50' ketch from NY to San Francisco.

There were many nights that I took the 12am - 4am watch.

The boat had speakers both on deck and on the spreaders facing down, for that FULL STERO EFFECT.

Ocean, Stars, sailboat, Cognac, music of choice- Pink Floyd- Darkside of the Moon.

Oh yeah, auto-pilot...

A few years ago I was in Cleveland, OH at the RnR HoF and there was a display featuring "The Wall" honoring Pink Floyd. I'm not sure if it was a temporary or permenant display but it was "Oh So Cool" There for a minute, I was lost in time. :wow

If any of you people going to Lima, OH this year, you really should put that stop on your itinerary. If I remember correctly Lima is about an hour or so drive from the RnR HoF. (the posted speed limit in OH is whatever the traffic is doing) And while you are in Cleveland, the Pro Football HoF in Canton is only about an hour south of there on I-77. Drive at your on risk!

Hey - "The Dead" covered "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" on this past summer tour. It was a free download on the summer tour site a few months ago and may still be. It really rocks - I have it on my iPOD and use it as the first song on my workout set, as it eases me in to the workout - great stuff.

By the way - I'm 47 and none of my kids are in to the Dead, but they all know what to buy me at Christmas and birthdays - Garcia ties, Dead Tee-shirts, etc.

Oh - is this the Dead thread???

They're both okay I guess. If I had to choose, I'd probably take Floyd. I always thought both were overrated.
I think I was the only American white boy in Germany in the summer of '88 who didn't go to the Floyd show in Munich that June.
I always found Floyd's music to be just so damn depressing. I've heard people say that it's a subtle way of them expressing joy by taking the opposite tack, so to speak. I don't buy that. What little I've heard of '60s Floyd I like though, as it's an entirely different animal. Not that I really dislike the stuff that came after- I just don't go for it most of the time.
The Dead- Hmmmmm. Never gravitated to them much. For original psychedelic era, I always MUCH preferred the Jefferson Airplane! When I was in college in the early- and mid-90s, Dead fans in my neck of the woods were mostly republican frat boys. That seems oxymoronic somehow.
I *NEVER* liked all the hubris that came with the Dead though. And I STILL rant about the time that I almost ran over a Deadhead who walked backwards into the street in front of my car when The Fates made me have to be somewhere near the arena where the Dead were playing on what would be the last tour with Jerry. I did decide maybe I'd go to a show next tour just to check out the atmosphere and see what it's all about. Then Jerry died. Scratch that plan!
Despite all the less than gracious stuff I can say about the Dead though, I still wish that I hadn't parted with whatever CD they released in '87, the one with Touch Of Grey on it. I actually did like some of the other songs on it.

I still have all my Jefferson Airplane CDs. :D

Yeah, really. When I was in college in the mid-70s, I cannot recall a single conversation about who was Dem or Repub or what. Of course, there is much that I cannot recall from that time... :jester

I feel kind of bad for those who, for whatever reason, didn't discover the Dead until after 1987's Touch of Grey. The whole scene exploded into a massive thing then and the sheer number of people made things very difficult. Jerry was also on that long slow decline, albeit with occasional peaks of brilliant playing.

Some Floyd trivia:

If you fly into Gatwick ( The other London airport besides Heathrow) and take the train from Gatwick into London or vise versa, you'll pass this unusual building that looks like some kind of weird giant power plant. It's the building on the cover of their Animals album.

I was in Cleveland over the weekend for the International Motorcycle show and took time on Sunday to visit the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame.

www.rockhall.com

I've been there several times and always enjoy myself. The Pink Floyd display is still there but I'm disappointed there isn't more attention paid to the group.

I'd agree that the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame should be on your short list of items to see while at the BMW National.

Maybe there will be a discount for rally attendees?

Keep this point in mind, they only let a certain amount of people in the hall of fame per hour to controll congestion inside. So, if you're going for sure I'd recommend that you order tickets ahead of time via the web or phone. You'll need to allow 3 to 4 hours for your visit.

Well, Pink Floyd certainly outlived the Dead! At least physically!

Did anybody see their performance over the weekend? I missed all the TV coverage and just saw a brief clip of Roger Waters singing on a highlight show. It sounded terrible - but I'm sure once it is mixed and matered it will sound great. Can anyone tell me what Floyd performed, and if there is a video of the performance available anywhere?

Rock on...

I sat and watched the whole thing just to see Pink Floyd. It was fricking awesome to see them together again. They started with "Breath" which made me get excited as a schoolgirl. They then went into a kick-ass performance of "Money", played an okay performance of "Wish You Were Here", adn then ended with "Comfortably Numb". It was really cool at the end because they had the wall set on the big screens in the background. I'm sure that somewhere on the net there is a video of the performance floating around.

I'd go to a Fleetwood Mac reunion tour if Stevie Nicks would take her top off and Christine mcVeigh would keep hers on.

Thanks for the link and info on the Floyd show. I imagine Sir Bob Geldof will be seling DVD's of the event to make money to pay his taxes, and to help the children in Africa.

Saw them on PBS a while back with full orchestra accompanyment and they were very good. I think that since they were not a "hard rock" but more in the "big-band" like Chicago they can still pull it off. Have to give credit to
Gracy Slick though...she said she wouldn't be a 55 year 'rock star' and she stood by her word. Some others should do the same. Bob Dylan was in Greenville last month with Willie Nelson and Bob was not good.

P.S.
The term 'put them on the trailer' is a drag racing term meaning to beat the other guy thereby sending him home...car on the trailer.

I doubt that will happen. I think that they barely got together for this one show. I think that they still hate each other too much to do a full blown tour.

My favorite "Floyd" album actually isn't. It's David Gilmour's debut solo album from 1978. In an interview he stated he used a lot of the sonic sound ideas from that album for the "Walls" album the next year.

Dylan is very uneven from show to show. I have seen him be so pedestrian and boring that I left in the middle of the show. I have also seen him several times where he was just unbelievably good. On fire. Kind of like the Grateful Dead were; you never knew what you were going to get on any given night...

I confess I never developed a taste for the Dead but I love Floyd. I found the Dead plodding and boring and Floyd also plodding at times but less boring ... and Gilmour's guitar work brilliant in its economy.

Only reason Floyd is less boring than the Dead is because of their shag-a-licious backup singers.

I have not seen Stevie for a while - and I understand she lives around me here in the Phoenix area. So the hot, dry air has turned those things in to raisins, huh? Too bad!

Concur on FM never being the same after Peter Green left. Early version of "Then Play On" - sublime...
