Since I posted my first message under the "Post Your Mug," I suppose I ought to introduce myself. My name is Russell Lambert and I ride a 1998 K1200RS which I bought used in 1999 with 4500 miles. I turned 60,000 this past weekend. I average about 10,000 miles a year on the RS. Other motorcycles I've owned include KLR650, EX500, and CBR600F3.

My K1200RS, which was originally Marrakech, now sports a custom blue and silver paint job (see Post Your Mug, page 9). It has a full Remus carbon fiber exhaust, Bitubo shocks, and Sargent seat. My primary accessories are an Escort 8500 radar detector, XM radio and Autocom for b2b communications.

I'm a late comer to motorcycles having started riding only 6 years ago at the age of 42. I grew up in southwest Florida, moved to Richmond, VA after college where I lived 18 years before landing in Phoenix in 2000. Been up and down the the length of the Blue Ridge Parkway, Cherohala Pwy and Deals Gap in NC, but most of my riding has been in Arizona and southern Utah. I love to sport tour, with an emphasis on the "sport" side of riding. The southwest is a magnificent place to ride, with great roads and year round weather.

My local club is the Arizona Rim Riders www.geocities.com/azbmwrr/ which boasts several accomplished LD riders and one of the newest MOA Ambassadors, Shelly Hogan. The Rim Riders is definitely a riding club; we ride almost every weekend of the year.

I also hang out (lurk) at www.bmwst.com and www.i-bmw.com under the same handle (RUSSL), but don't post much.

That's about it for me. I look forward to meeting some new folks and participating on the board.

Al and I are very good friends. I got my custom earplugs and Autocom from him, which he helped me install over the holidays. He is a super nice guy and a wealth of information. I almost went to Death Valley last weekend, but just completely forgot about it.

Man, the LEO's in your neck of the woods must be busy! :p

Welcome to the Board. You can type as fast as you want!:wave

MikeThere are a lot of sparsely inhabited high desert curvy roads in AZ of which many have a posted speed limit of 70 or 75 mph. Since we don't have much of a winter, the roads are in great shape. You can pretty much get away with 10 over the speed limit without risking a ticket, which allows for some decent sport touring. Great scenery, too!

I agree that the Arizona state flag is very cool and it is very appropriate. The sun shines here probably 300+ days out of the year and has some fabulous sun rises and sun sets. My avatar is the logo of my local BMW motorcycle club. It is the AZ state flag embedded in the shape of Arizona with a BMW logo on top.

I downloaded a pic of your K off of Vic's site awhile back........just in case I would ever drop mine. Rest assured that it would not be a copy, just an idea. May one assume that mutiple shades of blue and silver w/red pinstriping over marrakech contributes to an addition in peformance? (bunch of fastest colors)

I get laid off from the end of november untill sometime in late april every year, and have considered heading your way. Would like to trailor my R1100RSL & K1200RS and find a place to camp, where I could day ride and test those speed limits you mentioned. If you have any good places in mind, let me know.

TFCUH ( too frickin cold up here) Yea, I still ride when the roads are dry but only on the K100RS as it has become the "salt bike" (black w/slop)

All the great riding is north and east of the Phoenix metro area. Overnight temps here in the valley can get chilly during the winter (in the 30's). I would recommend camping on the outskirts on the east side during the winter months, because that is where most of the riding is done due to lower elevation and higher temps. Of course, cold is relative to what you're used to, and compared to Wisconsin, it ain't cold here. :)
