Howdy All,
I need the tool to replace the old rivets on my 78 R 100 RS windshield. Any good deals out there ? I'm being cheap and want to avoid spending $100.00 on one from the dealer.
If you have one you would like to sell. E-mail me supersonicus@core.com
Thank You
Pat Carol
:D
I have had one of these in my tool box for over 20 years.

They have tools for those things? I always waste a couple pushing them in with some blunt ended tool.

i'd say given the amount of times you have to do that job... a blunt tool (i believe i used the heavy pliers in the tool kit for doing mine) and twice as many rivets is about $92 better than the dedicated BMW tool. this one ain't rocket science, you can fudge your data ;)

Are you talking about what connects the shield to the fairing? I use nylon screws, pennies each at any hardware or home improvement store.
No special tools needed, unless you count a screw driver.
You can even get a set on eBay.

I'm with Braddog, nylon screws are way easier to work with. Home Depot has them.

Use of nylon screws means when you crash you'll maybe be well and thoroughly slashed by the broken plastic of the windshield. With the OEM plastic rivets, the windshield will go with you and not shatter. Screws are a VERY BAD idea.
You need a special tool for sure to affix the dashboard to the fairing with the hollow metal rivets, but the plastic windshield rivets can be installed--as noted above--with just a push with a blunt tool. I "lube" 'em with WD-40. It's ok to just cut off remaining portions of the middle shaft.
BTW, these things are called "Nylon Poly Drive Rivets."

I recently replaced the dashboard on my 77RS. The original rivets are made of copper, so I went to Lowes and bought some 1/4 inch copper tubing for refrigerators. I cut this into approx. 1/2 inch lengths. You need 14 of them.
A pipe cutter works well. Clean them up so that you can fit a screw of same dimention through these. The screw should be tapered so that it will expand the exposed end of each cut pipe/rivet. Fit the new piece into the dashboard/fairing hole and tighten a nut onto the screw through the new rivet. Because the taper is only on the head of the screw you must turn in around to insure that the rivet is expanding on both side. Use patience and work both sides until the pipe expands into a tightly fit rivet. This worked beautifully for me and ended up looking just like the original. Good luck!
