So, the gear shift indicator LCD on my K75 goes out.

I've had the bike for about 18 months and got so used to seeing the gear I was in I was totally confused without it. I actually had to remember my gear like on my /5?

No way.

A real dope I am.

Should this have been posted in the Gear Forum?

Anyone else done any doozies lately or am I the only one????????

I have been making mistakes all my life. I don't plan on stopping now. :clap

I never worry about which gear it's in... As long as the speed is good for the road you're on and the engine RPMs sound right, who cares what gear you're using. The only time it's a problem is when I forget to put it back in first at a stop light. :burnout

I understand what you are saying, as one who "grew" up with a digital read out. I rode an R1150R last year on an Edelweiss tour, it was the first time I'd ridden a bike without a digital display...I had to....well...pay attention to my shifting! Now, had it been my own K bike, I would have cared less, being familiar with the tune the engine plays, but I was not familiar with the song of the R and had to work off the tach.

That's pretty much the way I am as well. I probably watch the tach closer than the speedo, I can ride by sound/feel pretty easily. And for starting out at a stoplight, I'm OK as long as I'm no higher than 2nd. I can start from 2nd without killing it.

That said, I really don't like digital readouts for cycle gauges. Give me clocks, round clocks with dials and numbers. It doesn't matter if it's white on black, or black on white, as long as they're round with pointers and numbers.

What earthly difference can it possibly make what NUMBER gear you are in as long as the tach is in the right place? When you can't shift up any more, you are in top gear, whether 4th, 5th or 6th. When you can't shift down any more, you are in first. Neutral is one half-step up from first. What's the big deal?

Everyone makes mistakes.

Difference is.....a dope doesn't learn from them.

it's Friday and it's a little light hearted humour...In that case, you can fix it with duct tape. Every time you get on a bike that has one of those silly gear-number readouts, cover it with duct tape.

I have traveled many different routes in my life and this picture seems to sum up one of the most important things I have learned......"When you come to a fork in the road.......Take It! :thumb

Following up to a few different ideas posted here.

1)... I have a roll of black electric tape in my pocket right now. I never leave home without it. It's actually better than duct tape because it will fit in a pocket.

2)....I currently have 3 running BMW's only one of which has a working tach. One didn't even come with a tach. The high gear/low gear thing is the main issue.

3)....If I taped over a non-functioning tach, would that be redundant?

Scott, that picture looks like my driveway and road. Snow covered gravel and mud. I figured I needed to get used to gravel if I wanted to go visit Cliffy again. He had 4" of fresh gravel delivered on the road he lives on in my honor the last visit.

When I was 19 I bought a 1971 Bonneville and crashed it shortly after(not my fault, but inexperience and exuberance certainly played their parts).

Picked it up after it was fixed 3 weeks later and had to beetle to get to work on time.It stopped dead,4 miles from the dealer. This was in the days before cell phones, mind.Rush hour traffic in winterpeg and me by the roadside.I kicked and kicked and fiddled and did my imitation of trouble shooting.

Finally for some unknown reason,a light bulb glowed dimly.I wouldn't go so far as to say,it lit up.A voice said,Check the gas taps!!!

I did. They were off.I turned them on,tickled the carbs, kicked some more, and off I went.On time for work too.

Sure,I'm a dope. :D
