View Full Version : A Challange to all

As I watched last nights special on NBC News about the recent catastrophic events in the far east due to the Tsunami, I was moved by the plight of people that survived, their loss of loved ones, homes, livelihood and the horror of having lived through such an event. While I may have been unable to match many of the generous donations given during the program, some in excess of one million dollars, I none the less felt that I too could certainly afford to make at least a small donation. Having done so I considered how I could maximize the benefit to those who now find themselves in such desperate need. I therefore decided on the following two courses of action:

1: To put forth this challenge to the members of this group as well as other organizations I belong to: If you have not made a contribution I urge you to do so now. The need is readily apparent to anyone who has seen reports of the event, and not withstanding any political, economic or social views of the people or governments of the region you may have, the needs of the people are real, immediate and overwhelming. I choose the amount of $50 to give to UNICEF, but the amount nor the recipient is not as important as the act of giving. No matter the amount or to whatever agency you are most comfortable with or with whom you place the greater trust that the funds you donate will arrive intact and provide the greatest relief, I urge you to act.

2: I have also sent the letter copied below to the president of my company and I would urge all of you to write to the appropriate individual within your respective company or organization and challenge them to match any funds that the employees donate. By doing so I am hoping that I can turn my rather paltry sum into something that can have a much greater impact.

I’ll let you all know if my letter has the desired effect, and I’d be curious of anyone’s success should they also decide to encourage such participation through their company.

Dear Sir

In light of the recent catastrophic events in the far east due to the Tsunami I am putting forth this challenge. That the company provide for a campaign to solicit donations from the employees of SI International and that the Company match the funds thus collected to be given to an agency of the Company’s choosing that it feels would provide the greatest benefit to those who now find themselves in such desperate need.

I will start by offering the sum of $50, matching what I have already donated to UNICEF.

Yours truly

Jeffry L’H. Tank

Greetings,

The CEO of our company has offered a 3-1 match of any funds raised in any of our offices globally. Some of our Singapore staff was on vacation in the area but with zero casualties we beat the odds.

When he raised the ante I stepped up to a C note, all for a good cause.

I believe all our donations are going through the Red Cross of Singapore.

If you can, give.

Best,

Rob Nye

I canvassed my friends and in consequence, sent $3200 to the Canadian Red Cross on Jan.1
A friend of mine who is not included in that total donated $500 on Dec. 27.Clearly his spirit is more evolved than mine. When I put out my appeal to my friends,I asked for $50 each, thinking that would deliver a gallon of clean water to Sri Lanka,or Indonesia,or wherever.

With the blessings I have received in consequence of my membership in some of the world's elites(University graduate,Western hemisphere /North American dweller/professional),I decided that I could afford $250,and it was my plan to donate that as what I could afford, and generate in others, the will to donate more.

I was inspired by my friend,who can't "afford "$500 any more than I can,to donate $500;and so I did.

My belief was, those people have lost more than they can "afford "; what is the actual currency?

I can afford a 27 inch tv;I can't afford a 32 inch tv.Those people need water they can drink, and a place to bury the dead.

What can we afford?

Very cool, I'm still waiting for a response from my company, maybe I should forward this to them as an encourgement!

It's amaizing how "a little can go a long way" with just a little effort. With all the worlds ills, it is refreshing to see a little co-opperation now and then. My only fear is that as the news mongers turn to other issues in the days ahead the funds will dwindle and those that need help to continue to rebuild will be forgotten, guess we will just have to wait and see how it plays out over the coming months.

I forward a letter of the same basic idea and am awaiting a response. I was told today, to expect something Monday.

I got the response today, Holy Cats is it a response. The founder of my company is donating $1,000,000 and the company is donating $1,000,000. So the answer to my question was that I could consider my donation matched, and then some. :clap :clap
