Bleieve it or not, it's VERY likely it's cheaper to buy new than have repaired.
Check it out.

Need my 1971 R75/5 tach/speedo rebuilt is Palo Alto my only option?Depending on what's wrong with it, you CAN disassemble it, lube it and reassemble it yourself. I've done it on several instruments. Here's a how-to (http://faq.f650.com/FAQs/SpeedoClassicFAQ.htm) for the F650 Funduro. Different instrument, sure. But the process is still pretty much the same.

Flash thanks for the link but my problem is actually with the tach. The needle broke off and you can see a small spool of wire sticking out of the needle mount opening.

Flash thanks for the link but my problem is actually with the tach. The needle broke off and you can see a small spool of wire sticking out of the needle mount opening. That's because nobody bothered to lubricate a 30 year old instrument and the grease dried out. What you should do is find a trashed speedo for cheap, remove the tach from it and install it in your instrument. Be SURE to lube the speedo and tach while you have it apart.

I'm sure your right about the lack of lube Flash. The hard part is finding a cheap speedo.

Cheap? I don't know, but they turn up on ebay regularly. They don't go for $10-$20, but the most expensive one I've ever seen was a completely rebuilt one with a white face (by P.A.S. btw) for ~$300. (complete instrument including housing)
I've used, and would recomend, Palo Alto. You might want to give them a call and see if they have one someone never paid for for sale.

I have the exact same problem with my 72 R75/5. Have you received any price quotes for a repair yet?
Thanks

I just recently bought a wiring harness from an R60/5. I bought it from a seller on IBMWR. He was parting out a wrecked bike and only listed the frame and some other parts. By asking several questions, I was able to get the wiring harness by itself, and for $3 extra he included a crushed headlight shell. In that crushed shell was a wrecked speedo with a good tach. My advice; look at everything and scratch deep.

Mike to date I have not gotten any rebuild quotes. My bike is mechanically sound and I just finished repainting it. I'll ride it without a tech until a good deal on a used one comes along.

I just dismantled the afore mentioned wrecked headlight. I think...no....I know I can rebuild one of these. A few pointers needed. Removing and replacing the bezel without breaking the glass. Does anyone know where to procure new indicator needles?

A few pointers needed. Removing and replacing the bezel without breaking the glass. Here (http://faq.f650.com/FAQs/SpeedoClassicFAQ.htm) is a procedure that works on /5 speedos, too.

Thanks flash412. Now, about those indicator needles, how to obtain? Or, do I carefully grind them off of the hubs and super-glue replacements on there?

James I read somewhere that the best thing to do is replace the needles with painted piano wire superglued in place.
