Expect to have the rear drive splines on the /6 replaced/refinished shortly and as usual have some conflicting information on the best way to go about it. Some say used with low miles, some say replace the ring gear some say have it rebuilt(recut). Any information/experiences/machine shops would be sincerely appreciated.

It is time for me to lube the input shaft splines on my R100. I had it done about 20,000 miles ago and I don't know if it is something I should attempt, or if I need professional help. My mechanical skill is moderate, and my tool collection is also moderate. Everything that I have attempted thus far on the bike suprised me with its elegant simplicity, but I seem to be uniquely qualified to make simple issues complicated.
Any thoughts?
Thanx

I just lubed the splines for the first time on my r65 following the following instructions:
http://home.jps.net/~snowbum/inputsplinesthrowout.htm
I began by securely fastening the front wheel to the floor of my shop using an omega-shaped piece of steel strap through the wheel and bolted to the floor. Other than that, I followed the instructions like a cook-book.

I had the splines repaired on my /6.
Sent the whole rear to Speed's in MD.
I think at that time he charge about $250.00. To disassemble repair the splines, reassemble with new seals and adjusted.
If I remember it was back in 1996, so price may have gone up.
Very pleased with the workmenship and turn around time. :clap
