On Sunday, my '09 F8GS decided to lock itself in 1st gear. would run fine in that gear, but would not do anything else.
Dealer has it, showed me a slightly bent gear selector shaft. Warranty repair, i'll just pay $10 to overnight the part (which lets me keep the loaner 1050Tiger for 2 days, instead of giving it back.)
Should be all back together tomorrow afternoon, which will let me go play some more on that Trumpet. fun bike- killer sweet motor & brakes.
Looks to be this guy:

#14 in the fiche pic.

Just posting as an FYI at this point. how common is this? I know i've read a few other reports, but does not sound like many at this point. just curious if the cause of the lockup is consistent, or are we seeing multiple causations?

Hi, The last time I bent on of those was on a Honda. I caught a branch in the shifter lever and brought it out to 90 degrees. The part looked very similar-a rod with a Y on the end. IIRC I had to take off both sides of the engine. This is the first I've heard of on the F8. If you can let us know how you make out and if there was a specific reason. Thanks, Gary :brow

repair completed, all under warranty (except for the overnite freight). no clear causation- Service Manager asked if i'd beaten on it, or dropped it- neither case applied. hmmm. another mystery.

Glad that it worked out and thanks for the report. :thumb

Appears to be a weak part. Various mentions of this in ride reports elsewhere for the GS 800, sometimes blamed on the rider -right.....

Last time I heard, designers were supposed to make stuff strong enough for anticipated riding conditions. The fact that BMW goes from prototypes to production without any significant test fleet or time is why these things happen..
