I have been told that there is a camp ground to stay at during Sturgis that is about 30 miles out of town. Does anyone know of this?

Frank,

During bike week at Sturgis, every farmer's field, pasture and dirt road turns into a campground, but do you really want to spend time stuck in the world's biggest Harley-Davidson traffic jam?

The Black Hills offer some great riding and some beautiful scenery, but I wouldn't go there during bike week if my life depended on it. If you want to ride the Black Hills, I'd suggest doing it in late June or early July and avoid the crowds.

Yup!! What he said! It is a very beautifull area to ride around in WITHOUT 500K bikers and posers :cry . Last year I was in the area a week before the big event and heard from one local :rolleyes he was leaving town that day just to avoid the crowds.

Sorry after re-reading my post I meant to ask about a camp ground for BMW riders. I heard there was a campground for BMW's. I do know about other camp grounds in sturgis, but so not want all the party life that goes with it. There are several you can camp at for just $100. I have a buddy who would like to experience sturgis for just a day and then go riding out that way and see the sites.

If you are looking to see the sights during bike week, for get about it!! I have attended the event 12 of the last 14 years on the other brand, and there is some much traffic with in a 100 mi. radius you will not enjoy the riding. We went to the Black Hills for 3 days last summer 2 weeks before bike week and were treated to some very good riding with the roads all to our own. I think the event is a must see 1 time but dont plan on doing any serious riding.

The South Dakota club used to have a campout during Sturgis week, but I don't see it listed on the MOA website for last year. They stayed at the Whispering Pines campground. I don't know the latest arrangements, but you might check out the website - it shows BMW meadow camping for $9.50 a person ; )

Last year's When and Where showed:
July 9-11, 2004; 1st Black Hills Buffalo Stampede, Black Hills BMW Riders #203

Now that was a great time to ride the hills!!

I have stayed at Whispering Pines (Jct 44 & 385) 5 of the last 6 years during Sturgis Rally Week. Peter and Natasha have a nice clean facility and always have plenty of room for tent camping in the pasture area. Typically 30 -100 BMW's at any time. About 30 miles to Sturgis. Be sure to take Vanocker Canyon Road thru Nemo to enter and exit Sturgis. Most of the road was just paved 5 years ago. About 1/2 mile on North end and 3 or so on the South end are easy gravel to ride, but worth it. This road goes past the BMW Sturgis delaer on the way into town. This avoids the 385 and 14A nightmare at Dead wood and a 15-30 minute wait to enter Stugis Rally areas.

If you have never visited the Black Hills, you are in for a real treat. Lots to see do and ride in a very compact area. If you stay at Whispering Pines be sure to take the road to Silver City. 5 miles of lightly traveled, curvy road. Sort of a mini Deal's Gap.
