Traded my LT in on a GS. The GS runs like a scalded dog.

:clap

Any other comments about your new bike? That's quite a change in speed from the LT.

Everytime I see one of the new GSs I think 2 things. #1 I really want one. #2 Those plastic side covers screem out to have some customization.. Flames, or reflective paint... flames done with reflective paint? Swap with your friends to make new interesting color combinations!

Happy New Year to Everyone.

May your miles be many and your "performance awards" be few....

Thanks All.

I bought the LT two years ago and think it is an awesome bike. The intent at the time was to ride two up (wife) and maybe a long trip now and again. As it turns out the wife did not want to ride as often as she thought and I ended up riding the LT alone most of the time. As the reality of riding alone most of the time and two up on few occasions came to mind I thought about finding another bike not quite so heavy and one I could run down the FS roads on (I live near one of the US forests). Wallah! enter the new 1200GS into the picture. Since riding one almost a year ago I continually thought about replacing the LT with one. Well, I guess all the planets lined up perfectly on 12/31/2004 and I was able to aquire the bike I wanted with the setup I wanted when I wanted it for the price I was willing to pay. I believe the GS will fit my riding style perfectly. :D I look forward to sharing many ride stories with you folks in the near future.

I can't stop thinking about this scalded dog thing...ouch. I've always thought the 1150GS rode like a dog...I'm thinking you mean something different.

I guess the LT weighing in at 800 lbs. with 100 BHP was a formidable ride in itself, but then switching to the R1200GS with 100 BHP and weighing about 300 pounds less gave me the feeling of a bike that would run much faster (scalded dog feeling). I guess it is relative.

Great looking ride, Jeff. Now that you've done the swaparoo, you can start with the addaroos! Engine Guards, Lights, Seat, Bags and/or Backrest (for the wife) Tall Windshield, and the list goes on and on AND Don't Forget...THE MILES......You Have to Add Miles! That's the Least Expensive Add On you can put on your GS!!.... I know. I'm $1,800 and counting for add-ons this Winter and 0 (That's Zero) Miles :cry

As it looks in the your picture; you can start your "Rounder Miles" right away!!! :thumb

Thanks Bigfoot105! I've spent most of my E time at bmwlt.net. I am glad I registered here. Seems like a great bunch to chat with about MC stuff.

It is a bit warmer here in Atlanta than in Alaska. Putting miles on will be no problem. About the accessories, I was joking with the dealer about spending a small fortune on acc. in the near future. I guess part of the fun with motorcycling is customizing your ride the way you want it. I used to think adding things on was a pain, but now I think I am starting to enjoy it more. I just wish everthing you want to add on didn't cost three hundred dollars.

Nice. Very nice. I've never seen a bad picture of a GS. Dirty or clean. In a lot or on the road. One-up or two-up. They always look good.

much luck with your good looking new ride. $300, i wish half of the stuff i put on my bike was that little an amount. :brow i would love to have an rt and that bike, but alas, too short to ride the r/gs.

" too short to ride the r/gs."

I know what you mean. The darn thing is high in the saddle. I have a 34" inseam and I am touching my front part feet on the ground. As far as bikes I have found two trains of thought.

1) I have one bike and that is all I ride. I wish I could have more to choose from.

2) I have too many bikes and when I open the door they all say "me,me,me"

Accesorizing and insurance on one is all I can do for now. My mind say's go and my wallet say's no! :)

The R1200GS is a good fit for me. I'm lovin it.

I have decided the best bike is the one that I am riding at that moment in time.

34"?
I have a 32" inseam and can almost flat foot an 1150GS with the seat in the high position. :dunno
How do you have the preload on the shocks set?

I am riding the R1200GS. Don't know if that makes any difference. I think the preload is about medium. No matter, once I get going it's all good.

Or: Bring Money With

Does anybody remember the two girls selling t-shirts at the Morganton Rally with the -ahem- "bountiful" graphics that said BMW stood for "Big Money Willie"? My wife hated that shirt so much it just disappeared one day when I wasn't looking...and I do the laundry around here too.

BTW: excellent choice of rides motojeff.

Ever since i have had my 600 mile service.I smell oil,I have checked everywhere for a leak. When they change the oil or ajust the valves would there be any oil spillover anywhere?I own a RT1150 have only put another 100 miles on the odometer since the service.
Thanks Saint Pete Phil

Yeah Walt,

I'm merging from one style to another. Ain't motorcycling great! I wish I could have kept the LT, but wasn't in my budget. Feel free to email me if you have some good tips on the GS maintenance. You should be getting your stuff soon. If not let me know. I placed tracking, ins., and priority on it. Later.

Jeff and I spent yesterday together working the BMW MOA booth at the Atlanta Cycleworld show.

We talked some accessories.

He left the booth at the end of his shift with his hand on his wallet... :p

ps => would have posted some pics of the K12S, but I managed to leave my stupid camera at the show. :(

I started out today below freezing weather. Hands are the only part that got cold even with guards and heated grips. It was tolerable as it warmed up nicely throughout the day. I can see an aftermarket windshield in my future to help with buffeting. However, we had winds in the afternoon of 20-25 mph crosswise that buffeted the heck out of everything. Still I put down 300+ miles today and enjoyed every minute of it. :)
