There is a picture of a couple in the Dec 2004 BMWON at the 2004 Int'l Rally on page 86. The gentleman in the foreground is on a K1200GT and it looks as if he has panel protectors where his knee would touch below the tank. He also has protectors on the front of his system cases.

I recently made a ride out to Colorado, when I got back I noticed one of my panels got all scratched up. I think a rock or something got stuck there. I would love to contact that gentleman on the K1200GT and find out where he got those. Or can anyone tell me how to get some?? My beautiful 2004 K12 has and ugly scar...and I would like to prevent further damage.

Please help...

Those would appear to be genuine BMW parts. I'm sure you'll be able to find the Saddlebag Scuff Protectors at your local dealer but I can't see the tank protectors well enough in the photo. BMW carries a few different padded knee pads so one should fit. Check out this online vendor A&S Cycles (http://www.ascycles.com/detail.aspx?ID=1991).

I personally used clear paint protective film precut to fit the tank to protect my bike. You can cut your own 3M paint protective film if you wish.

I use the tank pads on my K1200RS. I bought mine from Santa Cruz BMW (http://www.bmwsantacruz.com/) and are Wunderlich pieces. They stick on with double stick foam tape (already installed on the pad) Just peel off the protector strips and apply where you want them. The set also comes with a tank protector pad. I believe the price was $30. The Wunderlich part number is #1250082.

Besides being functional, I think they add a cool look to the bike by accentuating the lines.

BTW, I also use the clear vinyl in other places, but the pads provide more than just scratch resistance.

Stevie Wonder,

I bought the Wunerlich Tank Pads from Santa Cruz BMW (I used to live there) and they took care of the problem alright! Plus they look awsome! You da man!

Also thank you M.Cohen for your advice. I think that clear paint protective film will come in handy as well.

Ride Safe,
Peter

PS. I will post a picture when I get home. : )
