Just out of curiosity are there any K1's still on the used market other than collector items? How much could one expect to pay for one in good enough condition to ride on a regular but not commuting basis? Any particular areas that should be checked carefully before buying? Any input would be appreciated.

Yes there are, I came very close to buying one about 2 years ago. The going price is usually between $7-10K depending on condition and mileage, most have less than 20K miles. I test road the bike for about 60 miles and had a blast! It handled nice with the very wide handlebar, but wasn't really flickable in the turns, very good wind protection, so good that you had to really look at the speedo to know how fast you were going. I got it up to around 120mph and she was as stable as any bike I ever rode. It really draws attention at stop lights (this was the ketchup and mustard color). Personally I like the graphite and the blue and silver colors without the graphics. I guess you can tour on it, but there isn't much luggage capacity, and I found the pegs a little to high and rearward for long distance. As far as reliablity its basically a K100RS with a different fairing, so its as reliable as any other kbike, maintenance will be more because of the removal of the fairing for service Go for it!!!!:twirl

I vasilate between thinking the K1 is the Ugliest bike ever and one of the coolest. I'm pretty certain that they are, or will be, VERY collectible. Along the lines of a Craig Vetter Triumph Rocket III or a Bimota. And they are out there. The old Las Vegas dealer had one on consignment for a long time.
I would suggest making a serious decision about what you want the bike for prior to a purchase. If you want it for a "collector", spend the most money you can afford on the best, lowest mile example you can find. OTOH, if you intend to ride it, save some bucks and just buy a well maintained example.
