About 5 miles from home I noticed a strong gas smell, however my '02 R1150RT continued to run OK. After I got home and shut the bike down an inspection revealed one of the fuel line snap fittings had come loose and had leaked some gas. (IMO, as the bike ran after the gas leak, the line that leaked must have been the return line). After reconnecting the fuel line fitting, the bike will not start. My question: Is it possible running the rest of the way home without fuel circulating has damaged the fuel pump? I can hear what sounds like the fuel pump pressurizing when I turn the key on. The shop manual does state that circulating gas is what cools and prevents damage to the fuel pump bearings.
Anyone had any experience with this or care to offer a suggestion? TIA

If I remember right, the 02RT had a recall because of a fitting on the fuel system. I know because I had that problem and the dealer took care of it.

Is there something in the fitting that's blocking the fuel flow?

The pump is also cooled by the fuel in the tank so it ought to be allright. I would however bring the bike to the dealer as the recall may be effective for your bike too.
Good luck!!

Got a call from the dealer this AM. Seems one of the hose clamps inside the tank had also come loose, fuel pump is OK. Funny thing is, the dealer was the last one who removed and worked inside the tank. Can't complain, tho, all was covered by warranty, including a roll-on ride to the shop. Close call, mileage is 35,550!
