My dealer has a couple of CHIPS California Highway Patrol bikes for sale.
Any thoughts about them? They are both 1000 or 1150 oilheads with typical skinny police saddlebags, painted black and whiite (Ugh) and both have 60 K miles on them. One is a 2000 model for $5900 and the other is 2002 model for $8900 also with 60 K miles on odometer. My guess is that they have received regular service and maintenance and mostly freeway cruising experience. Questions might be: Do police officers leave bike idling while stopped and could this be a problem, idling on a sidestand for 10-20 minutes at a time? Another question is individual rider's habits, riding clutch or brake in heavy traffic conditions? I've seen police demo rides where the bike is pretty severely abused especially in slow traffic and controlling traffic situations. Considering making an offer on the 2000 model. Whaddya think?
Thanks in advance.

Fritz - I believe the authority RTs have an auxillary cooling fan to prevent overheating while the bike is idling or in slow traffic. It forces air through the oil cooler ducting (a nice feature really). Someone on this list (sorry; can't recall who) posted pics of the system a while back. It seems like a maintenance history should be available for the bike. I'd say if you like the PD style go for it! They look like they'd make a great solo ride.
