View Full Version : Choke cable

Since I have the tank off to tackle the fuel sender issue, I thought I would try to resolve the issue with the ineffective choke cable.

97 R1100RT- 20,000 miles: Moving the choke lever does absolutely nothing to impact engine rpm. Been that way since I bought the bike over a year ago. Previously I removed the box that houses the cable connections between the choke/twist grip and throttle bodies. It wasn't much fun!

Everything was connected and the choke cable moved, but the whole system just seemed ineffective.

My 96 Oilhead RT had a different cable system and the choke worked.

Before I dig it out again, I'm seeking input from those who may have gone there before.

Any guidance/comments?

Thanks

not sure if your RT is set up the same as my '01R11S, but i found my choke would only raise rpms if i held it in the far open position, for which there is no "catch" to hold it there. there's a cable adjuster just off the handlebar control. that did the trick- no fishing under the tank at all.

My '97 RT's choke lever is unlike anything I have seen previously.

Move the lever to 'full choke' before starting the engine, then once running the choke lever stays at 'full' until you move the throttle, at which time it clicks off of 'full'. From that point to no choke, I see no difference.

I have an "all or nothing" choke, I guess. I hope this helps you; maybe you haven't got the detent for full choke.

I would like to learn more about this, also.
