I saw this mentioned in the spline lube thread........(hope he doesn't mind me using it)
"...The only part left over is a small spring from somewhere under the center stand. I think it has to do with the clutch activated side stand return (which doesn't activate now......."
So, can someone tell me about this? I have a '93 K1100RS, and a 2nd 'parts' bike on which I just straightened the side stand. Looking around under there I didn't notice any springs besides the 2 side stand springs. Is there some kind of niffty side stand stow system that is actuated by the clutch on some bikes? :dunno KC

Yes, was on my K75S. I don't know about K100s and K11s.
A rod connected the back-of-the-transmission clutch arm with the sidestand so that squeezing the handlebar clutch lever would retract the stand. Because of the clutch starter interlock switch, no clutch squeeze = no start.
If the bike was resting on the sidestand, the handlebar clutch lever just wouldn't move, an unsubtle reminder that the stand was down.
Go to one of the sites (Max BMW, RealOEM, et al) that present the BMW parts fiche online, and you'll be able to see how the parts interact.

Don't mind you using it at all. I was happy with the success of the clutch spline project and disappointed that I did not properly identify, or photograph, the mystery location for the spring. At that point in the project, I thought for sure it would be obvious on where it went back.
Lesson learned - notes or photos on all items for the first time. Relying on memory alone only works when I have done it at least one time previously.
Thanks for the tip on using the online parts list. I will give that a try and see if that pinpoints it for me. I did not realize how much I liked the clutch/sidestand feature until I stopped having it.
I took a quick peek - there are three springs I saw it might be, two in the side/centerstand and one in the clutch arm. Can you post a pic of the spring?

I discovered that auto side stand thing by accident yesterday. I just bought a K75 last Friday. yesterday I was showing it to a friend when he tried to pull the clutch in. it wouldn't move... so I got on the bike and stood it up and tried again. the clutch lever pulled in and the sidestand went up. I was in shock...I had never had a bike that did that. damn Germans...messing with my head. LOL

Thanks Ted. Appreciate your diligence on this. Did not have time to actually get back under the bike after looking at the side/center stand diagram. Haven't tried to put a picture on the Forum. Let's see if this works tonight.
Looks like the sidestand tension screw - #13 in this pic:

Nope. It's the brake pedal return spring. One end connects to a small bracket on the pedal linkage and the other to the pin to which the upper end of the center stand springs attach. The pedal spring goes between the c/stand springs.

I think lostboy is pointing me in the right direction. I remember it came off the brake side when I was taking off the center stand. It just did not look obvious in that area when I did the reassembly. I will check out another section of microfiche file to verify where I am going with it.
Thanks again to Ted and lostboy. The patience and targeted helpfulness (is that a word?) on this site make it, quite simply, awesome.
I expect to get the spring back on and then decide on what I do about the rear shock replacement.

When I bought my used 1992 K100RS there was no "owner's manual," so I ordered one. When it came, found it not nearly as informative as the manual with my previous K75. (I understand they have gone even farther downhill since 1992 - presumably to give the dealers more servicing business.)
But, back on track - on page 30 "Caution: Place motorcycle on centre stand. Prop stand has start lockout." Interesting, since mine starts just fine on the side stand, and that is how I usually start it at home. (Start the bike, insert ear plugs, put on the helmet, don gloves, shut off the "choke," ride.)
Honesty compells me to admit that more than once I've ridden off with the sidestand down which so far has just been embarrassing, but obviously could be really dangerous. Seems to me I've also read about people intentionally disabling this feature because road debris in the wrong place can keep your bike from starting.
Anyone know if this safety feature is something that has come, gone, and come back again? Despite my past errors, don't think I will attempt to make my bike refrain from running on the sidestand, if that is even possible.
If your bike too is happy to start on it's side stand, I believe it is prudent to pull in the clutch, check the neutral light, and check the gear indicator before you hit the starter button. And also build in the mantra "sidestand before gear."

Your bike came with a sidestand lock out switch. These were frequently disabled or "defeated" with a jumper lead from BMW or simply jumped.
Under the right battery cover and tied to the horizontal frame tube you should find a two-pin quick connector. See what is connected to it to diagnose it.

A closing thank you to lostboy and follow up picture. I went out this morning, looked in the designated spot and....sure enough, there was a slot between the two springs for center stand. When I knew exactly where to look, it seems so obvious. The mating hole on the brake lever was not so obvious. I've looked thru the online microfiche files and can't find any reference to my elusive spring. It's the collective wisdom of this site that has impressed me on my short time here.
Picture is of the properly installed spring (I hope), looking straight up from the floor.

That's the way mine on the 91 RT is mounted.
