I need to change crank case hoses and several others. Some of the hose clamps are the one time use kind. I noticed on some postings that OEM clamps are put back on. Is there any reason why I can't just use regular old screw hose clamps ?

Dale,
The SS worm drive clamps work just fine. If you are replacing the fuel line hoses, the higher quality FI clamps (with the solid inner band) work best. BMW dealers sell these too.

As BMWMICK pointed out - if you're doing any of the FI hoses, make sure you use hose clamps with an inner liner (so the slots aren't seen by the hose).
For your other clamps - the reason for the one-time-use clamps isn't 'cause they are cheap or even quicker to install. They have one advantage over normal screw clamps.. you can't overtighten them. They are made to exert a specific amount of force on the hose when used with the correct hose and fitting, and tightened with the correct tool. In a few cases - they also allow clamps to fit where normally they wouldn't (or where it would be difficult - such as the throttle-bodies.)
So - long story short
1. If you go with screw clamps - do not overtighten them, especially on any plastic fittings such as the radiator fittings.
2. If you want to keep it stock - you can find the crimp tool for the one-time-use clamps at any auto-parts store. It's called a Honiker clamp, or better known as a CV joint boot clamp - used on lost of FWD cars.
3. Don't reuse the one-time-use. They do experience some metal fatigure every time they are tightened which could result in the clamp breaking at an inopportune moment. They're not expensive - go for new.

It's called an Oetiker clamp. I bought Oetiker pliers at an auto supply store to squeeze the clamps.

Some boat places have them. DLEARL who is sometimes active on the Airhead forum is a Wurth dealer. Contact him directly with the sizes you need and he'll fix you up.

These are the clamps to which Flash refers. Come in most MM sizes up to 18, beyond 18 there are only a few ie: 20, 23, 25, and 27 but I can get ZebraŽ clamps that are stainless steel which have a wider range but have no slots that damage hoses.

IMHO, these clamps are the only way to go. Very "field servicable". Oetiker clamps are a viable option only if you chose to carry spares and the pliers with you.

If you need a very small clamp for a vapor hoses for example, Oetiker clamps are the way to go. I've never seen screw type clamps smaller than about 3/8 inch. Even the Wurth clamps mentioned here only goto 8mm (about 5/16 inch).
