Looked a a 1989 R100RS and it would only run with the choke fully on. Even at 3500 rpm under load it just quits if you click the choke off even warmed up. Runs ok (a bit rich!), what is the typical carb issue? Thanks

Incorrect assembly? Seems like the biggest issue here...

Dirty/cruddy main circuits are the usual culprit for needing choke/enricher use. If carbs not recently worked on I would not look at incorrect assembly. If stored for a while then the fuel may have "turned", it has a distinct oder, even when burned.

Jets are clogged... I just went threw this. any motor left sitting for an extended amount of time will get varnish buildup in the carb bowls. most people don't drain their bowls or add an additive to prevent buildup. I've done two this spring already. drop the bowl off the carb and remove both jets and clean them. I use tip cleaners (gas torch) to clean jets.

The above quote is the correct way to get the problem fixed. If I have a problem like that and I know it was running fine when I put it away I give the gas a couple of doses of Techron fuel system cleaner. If you can put up with the rough running for a while and can run it at some speed/under load chances are you will be able to skip the disassemble part. Good luck :type

I had a similar problem today. '89 r100gs that had been sitting for nearly a year got a fresh battery. then i notice the fuel lines had deteriorated to crumble. replaced all w/ autoparts store gates rubber 1/4" fuel hose. Actually, I had to run a solid line (I had some 1/4" metal brake line handy) for the crossover cause the autoparts store variety was too fat to make it through the small hole.

Got it all back together, and the fuel just didn't seem to flow. It would run a bit, better choked, and then die. Crapped out a couple blocks from the house. I took off the bottom of the carb and it at best was trying to refill with a slow drip.

The problem in my case were the nylon/SS quick disconnects that were in the fuel line. Somehow, when I put it all back together, they were blocked mostly. I eliminated them and all is well.
