Greetings,
I am pleased to announce that we have made an arrangement with Smugmug (http://www.smugmug.com) to offer our members a discount on this service. If you are familiar with photo sharing and want to get started simply follow this link (http://www.smugmug.com/?referrer=v6FeTKhJQ1cFE) to get started. For further explination of this service please see below.
As you have noticed here in the BMW MOA Forum users have the ability to include pictures in their posts. There are two ways to do this, either by attaching the picture or linking to the picture on the Internet.
Attaching a picture means that when you compose your post you include a reference to the picture which is on your local computer. When you click submit post the picture is transferred from your PC to the 'MOA server running this forum. Because we pay for the size of our site and the transfer of information (bandwidth usage) we limit the size of attachments and the number (one) you can include in each message. When you attach a picture if you want to have any of your non forum friends to see it you must either send them the picture as an attachment to an e-mail message or send them a link to your forum post.
Linking a picture means that your photo is already posted to the Internet, meaning folks can view it as they view these pages. The advantage here is that you can include multiple pictures in your post, you a not restricted to the size of the picture and if you want to refer friends outside of the forum to the photo you can do so.
There are many free services for hosting (sharing) your photos. The drawback to the free services is they either require registration, include advertisements or limit the amount of transfer per day. Each time someone views your image the data file is transferred to their computer. This uses bandwidth, so when you reach your bandwidth limit your photo is no longer available until the next day. This can be an issue with a picture you link to a forum post as each person who views the thread will be downloading the pictures which would count against the bandwidth limit. If you have ever noticed that once in a while you will see a white square with a red x, this would indicate a broken photo link, i.e. the picture is no longer available.
There are some pay as you go services for hosting your pictures. Our favorite is Smugmug. Smugmug is simple to use and in addition to being very user friendly Smugmug offers photo tools and a simple way to post your pictures to forums.
We have set up a community in Smugmug and have selected Smugmug for hosting many of the photos you will see on the BMW MOA website including our new feature, the picture of the week (coming soon). For a small annual fee Smugmug gives you 2 gigabytes/month of traffic. That's about 30,000 medium-sized (600-pixel) image views/month. Smugmug also offers photo tools, prints and tools to make it simple to include your pictures in forum posts or share with friends.
To sign up for Smugmug and receive the $5 discount available to 'MOA members to get started please follow this link (http://www.smugmug.com/?referrer=v6FeTKhJQ1cFE). Our cupon is entered automatically however for your reference our cupon code is: v6FeTKhJQ1cFE.
As always if you have any comments or questions we are ready to assist.

Yes, thanks a bunch Rob. I've been using Snapfish because it's free. But has all the drawbacks for others you mention.
I hope this paves the way to have "Photo Classifieds".

Smugmug has a nice tutorial on the subject here (http://www.smugmug.com/help/picture-sharing).
Basically what you need to do is find the URL for the image itself. In windows, right-click on the image to bring up a small menu. Select "properties". Highlight the URL of the image, copy it (ctrl-C), and now you've got it ready to paste it (ctrl-V). When posting to the forum, select the "insert image" button above the message window (looks like a little mountain on a postcard), and then paste the URL there. Hit "ok" and there you go.
On a mac, control-click or right-click on an image, select "open image in new window". This will open a new browser window with only the image in it. Copy the URL from the address bar and paste as described above to include it in the message.
Make sense?
hint: if the URL you are pasting doesn't end with ".jpg" or ".gif", you don't have the right URL.

Tom - Send me the address of your smugmug account and I'll get a photo linked for you. You can hit the Quote button and see how the address gets stuck between the two image markers.
I'll pick a good one. :D
Here's one of mine. Take a look at the post by pressing the quote button. You'll see two "tags" with IMG in the middle of them, surrounded by square brackets. The one with the / is the one that tells vBulletin to stop looking for characters to interepret as a link to an image. I got that address by right clicking on the picture I liked and looking for the URL that had the full name of the file, all the way to ".jpg".
It'll make sense when you look at it. Those Quote markers show that this text will be a quote in the post. Up at the top is another QUOTE marker, no slash preceding it.

While this can be nice, simply posting the appropriate sized image from smugmug is probably more than enough most of the time. Adding all the links and extra text can get fussy for both the creator and the reader.

Thanks for the props. It wasn't just me, Dave Swider (Kbasa) had quite a bit to do with this arrangement. I just got to make the announcement. :)
If you check out my gallery at rpb.smugmug.com you will see I have a decent amount of pictures. Bear in mind I am linking to photos on multiple forums and even with fairly heavy use I am still nowhere near needing to upgrade to pro.

Can I just say again I love smugmug. This is so great. My wife is finally off my back about getting all our photos on-line. It has made a lot of family members happy as well.
Also, about resizing pictures. I use a very simple technique do down-size my pictures before I upload them to smugmug. Assuming you are using Windows XP & Outlook.
1. Select or highlight the photos from a viewer window you want to re-size (the thumbnail view makes this much easier).
2. Select E-Mail this file or E-Mail the selected items if you have highlighted more that one picture.
3. A dialog box will open with two choices. The default is “Make all my pictures smaller” the other choice is “Keep the original size”. Keep the default choice “Make all my pictures smaller” & press the OK button.
4. A new E-mail message will be created with you selected picture or pictures in the attachment pain.
5. Highlight the attached (now smaller sized picture) & copy it back to a folder of your choosing.
This is a fast & simple way to make your pictures smaller & uniformed. I sure beats the heck out of resizing them one at a time.
I hope this is a useful tip.

Hey now,
I am glad you like Smugmug, we are very happy with the service. FWIW, many of the images you now see on our website are actually residing on Smugmug, this improves performance and saves us some bandwidth.
One of the beauties of smugmug is that it will share your photos in multiple sizes.
I put up my originals and when I insert them in the forum I go to the photo I want to share and click "share with friends and forums".
The next screen gives me the following options:
tiny > http://RPB.smugmug.com/photos/15387228-Ti.jpg (link) perfect for sigs
thumbnail > http://RPB.smugmug.com/photos/15387228-Th.jpg (link)
small > http://RPB.smugmug.com/photos/15387228-S.jpg (link) forums & blogs
medium > http://RPB.smugmug.com/photos/15387228-M.jpg (link)
large > http://RPB.smugmug.com/photos/15387228-L.jpg (link) high bandwidth!
I like to use the medium setting so the picture described by the links would be:
http://RPB.smugmug.com/photos/15387228-M.jpg
My GS getting prepped for the 05 Iron Butt Rally
In my opinion the only reason to resize before uploading is if you are on a slow connection.
HTH and thanks for the feedback.

iRene

Smugmug and other similar services are pretty nice and make life easy for pic posting, but there are some of us who just need a quick, free way in which to get a pic from the "My Doc" or "My Pic" folder into a post here.
For this task, I have been using Blogger. I simply set up a blog account, keep it private and then upload my pics as needed. There are three sizes available using Blogger's setup for pics and the pic quality is good enough for most of the posting I would do here.
I realize it's about as simplistic as it can get, but for those of us who are somewhat pc challenged, it's about the easiest and painless method I have found--and best of all, it's free.

How better? You can "upload" pics to the site and I'm not talking about a link to a pic on some photo hosting site. Other than an 800 x 800 limit per pic, there is no overall Mb limit for a member's pics/folders.

vBulletin does a lot of things really well, but when databases start to carry large quantities of attachments, response time gets slow. From the beginning here, we've encouraged members to hotlink photos.
I don't know that we need to jump into the photo hosting business when there are enough free or reasonably priced sites around that do it better. If you think about what it takes to host things like photos, the backup process alone could be quite overwhelming. I don't think that's quite in line with this organization's core competencies.
I've used free sites, but the tools that come along with smugmug, the lack of advertising and the support they show us as part of the affinity program makes me feel like the $30/year or whatever it is is well spent. (If you're a Mac user, the Smugmug uploader that integrates with iPhoto is absolutely outstanding)

Hi Ian,
I would have thought.
Maybe you can provide some suggestions.
I'm on dial-up (still) and my ISP provides 5Mb of web space for my site. Now if I choose to go high speed, that ISP provides 15Mb of web space, so I don't need my present ISP.
The other solution is to use a photo hosting site as my web site, but I would think that it would limit me in what I can do. Can I post links on SmugMug? I haven't tried yet. If I go that route, I can get high speed interent for a lot less from other providers, but with no frills such as web space.
So which route to go? And since I don't generate revenue with my site, I want to keep it cheap. Its there as a service, nothing more.

Hi Ian,

Maybe you can provide some suggestions.
I'm on dial-up (still) and my ISP provides 5Mb of web space for my site. Now if I choose to go high speed, that ISP provides 15Mb of web space, so I don't need my present ISP.
15MB isn't a lot of space when it comes to original photos. With SM, you can upload
any size original. SM will convert it into thumbnail and several other sizes (including
the original) on uploading. With your own service, you'll do the conversions yourself.
Or you might shoot pictures at a lower resolution.
My self, one image can be 12MB in size. I may edit it but I almost always upload
originals.
The amount of data you can store on SM is unlimited.
The other solution is to use a photo hosting site as my web site, but I would think that it would limit me in what I can do. Can I post links on SmugMug? I haven't tried yet. If I go that route, I can get high speed interent for a lot less from other providers, but with no frills such as web space.
SM isn't a web host per se but depending on the level of subscription, you can
heavily modify the look and feel of your site. Take a look at the customization section
in the SM support forums over on www.dgrin.com. I think you'll find there's a very
wide range of features.
SM Help (http://www.dgrin.com/forumdisplay.php?f=12).
SM Customization (http://www.dgrin.com/forumdisplay.php?f=31).
SM API's and Hacks (http://www.dgrin.com/forumdisplay.php?f=25).
So which route to go? And since I don't generate revenue with my site, I want to keep it cheap. Its there as a service, nothing more.
At a minimum, you get unlimited data storage. The reliability of data center class
services. No spam or banner ads and no requirement to purchase a minimum
number of prints to keep your subscription alive. Some of the recently update
"themes" are pretty cool too. If you want to add passwords on a gallery, just
click the button. The online help is pretty good too (plus it comes with a whole
community of peeps willing to help both with your skills and SM).
If you do choose to order prints, they come with an unconditional guarantee. If you
are not happy, SM will refund your money or reprint them at no charge to you.
As a side note, SM takes photography pretty seriously. Not only do they try to
present your photos in the best possible way, they provide some of the best
color correction (i2e) and explore why flash reddens prints (the science).
I really do think the founders are committed to providing the best photo sharing
site.
Not bad for $40.

I see you shoot in either RAW or TIFF. So do I, now.
The $40 isn't all bad, now that the US dollar has taken a dive. I just don't want SM to justify raising rates by adding features, features that I don't want (like the channels my CATV company is adding, channels I don't want as part of the original package, yet I have to pay more for them).
Thanks for all the info and tips.

Yes, I do shoot RAW. Greater flexability :)
Regarding price increases, when I first signed up, there was a high degree of
instability. For the second year, those who stuck it out were given a free year
of service. That price increase was the first in maybe 4 years.
The service is still a great value if for no other reason than the unlimited storage
feature. I know how much I have uploaded and I have a relatively good idea of what
that costs (I manage storage day to day). It's a pretty good deal.

I came across a really nifty Freeware program called IRFANVIEW (http://www.irfanview.com). I've only played around with it for thirty minutes and so far it looks good. It certainly reads more odd-ball formats than anything I've come across.

Irfanview is on a par with PhotoShop with regard to capability. My past experience
has been good however it does have its quirks and as long as you are aware of
them, it's a great tool. If you like it, don't forget to contribute to the authors for
all of their hard work.

By "we", I am assuming the BMWMOA?
I know I get a $5 discount, but who gets the $10 credit for signing someone up, the BMWMOA? If so, is it applied to my membership dues?
I'm just on a 14 day trial...still uncertain about the service.
The MOA gets the $10 credit. It's not applied to your membership dues, but goes toward the account we keep to manage image assetts for this web site.
I hope that helps.
FWIW, the owner of Smugmug rides a K12RS. He's one of us. :)

Ian,
What do you recommend for digital photo editing software? It has to handle TIFF and RAW.
If you have a Mac, try Bibble. It's free in the Light version and very, very powerful.

Who might that be? Maybe do a story on him/her and how their little image empire got started.

As is everything else for a Mac...but I've never owned one for the usual reasons.
You'd figure using a PC, I'd at least run Linux and have something crashproof. :laugh

It's actually Baldy, the guy that owns Dgrin and Advrider. Also know as Chris MacAskill.
He's a genuinely good guy. You know you're dealing with One Of Us when the categories for albums in smugmug include motorcycles. :ha

Like sausage boy said, Chris Macaskill is the man, along with his wife, son, and his wife, IIRC. They've been featured in a number of stories both in the web and print press. He used to own a GS, too.
But he has a dark side.
He owns a scooter. :p

His loss for selling the best in the BMW line-up. :nyah

This is my first attempt to link photos from Smugmug to the forum. If this works, I try adding more than one pic.

Now I shall try to put multiple images into the post, starting with a shot of Motel Blanchet.

Now for the 2nd image between text using a photo of the Com'Inn in Moncton NB.

Is it possible to put in 3 images?

I think that I have gotten the hang of posting photos. Thanks to all in the previous posts whose information has helped me with this. Paul

Now try them a wee bit smaller. :D
The big size is nice, but might be a bit much for users with smaller monitors.

I have been on Smugmug for years. I'd rather give my friend my coupon code so they can use it under me.

The forum software uses those tags for displaying images. You shouldn't need to remove them.
