All: My '00 RT has developed several cracks in the RH footpeg mount plate. I was quoted a replacement cost of $230 so I'm looking at options.
Has anyone else gone thru anything similar? I'm thinking of drilling a hole to stop the crack(s) and using JB Weld to fill in the existing crack.
Hopefully there's an attached photo showing the cracks.....

As useful as the stuff is, I'm not a fan of JB Weld for anything like that.
Take the bracket to a welder that can TIG weld aluminum, and have it fixed properly.

Thanks! I'm assuming I should still drill a small hole to stop the crack?

Steve - LeRoux is smart; a TIG weld is definitely the way to go. Meanwhile, I'd drill the hole - it will help stop the crack from propagating. It doesn't seem like it would need to be of a very large diameter. Not much bigger than a pinhole. Jeez - that's an ugly picture. Do you know what caused it?

You could also try the South Beach diet to prevent any further cracks.

I also had a broken plate It came from a car knocking the bike over. Bought a new plate and promtly cracked it puting it on. Check for a very smooth fit shim anything that has any sort of gap. But go ahead and have it welded. You'll have to polish it out and repaint it silver to match. Not hard but it could save you bundle.

Sorry to be so pessimistic, but to this mech engr (retired) this is a classic fatigue failure. Probably the part is underdesigned. The NTSB may even be interested if there are many others.
Heliarc welding is OK for fuel tanks and such but for other applications, any aluminum weld is not very strong, unless it can be heat treated after welding. Not knowing the parent alloy and its possibilities, your chances of a long term fix are slim, though I suppose possible.
Nobody makes welded aluminum airplane structures for that reason.
Anybody else had this happen? I'm going to look at my 2000 RT although the mileage is low.

Ouch!
Probably just crash damage.
I'm a pretty good welder, and I could repair that part without a problem.
Pick a guy who does things other than lawn furniture and you'll be alright. :)
