Winter is almost over around here and i went to crank my 2005 1200GS and she would not fire up.
Put her to bed last fall with full gas and battery tender worked well, etc. I siphoned the gas out, put in fresh, asked the moto gods to give me luck etc. No crank. (starter is working well) Pulled the plugs, put a little gas on the plugs and in the cylinders and she acted like she wanted to fire but no luck. Fuel pump?? where is it? ANY SUGGESTIONS, IDEAS of things a non mechanic can do?
Live in Steamboat Springs and the closest bmw shop is 4+ hours.
Thank you. :dunno

No crank. (starter is working well)
What does that mean? If the starter is working well the engine will crank. Or do you mean that the engine is cranking (turning) but not firing?

Fuel pump is in the tank. Access is from the upper left side of the tank. Pull of the left side cover and you'll see a black plastic cover sticking up from the tank. Lever that cover off and you'll see the pump output line and two electrical connectors. One of the connectors goes to a "controller". The output of the controller (hidden) feeds power to the fuel pump.
The controllers are known to fail, usually on later models. There was a recall on this item for the newer bikes.
You might want to pull an injector and see if the fuel line is being pressurized when you turn on the ignition. If it is I'd first look elsewhere for problems.
Any critters make their home in your air snorkel over the winter?

Boat... Have you tried twisting the throttle/giving it gas while thumbing the starter? Mine won't fire in the wintertime if I don't do this.

How do you check the injectors? Thanks.

Turn on the engine cutoff switch. make sure it is in neutral. turn on the ignition switch. You should hear a whirrrrrr, for a few seconds. Does it?

Turn on ignition. Crank throttle to stop. Turn off ignition. Turn on ignition then hit starter. This should reset the computer.

I have trouble with my '08 GSA starting when cold and when I haven't driven it in a couple of weeks. Plenty of pumping the throttle seems to help.
A friend has a F800GS and couldn't get it started. He took it to the shop and they found out it was a faulty fuel pump and injectors. Under warrenty but still two weeks to get the parts from Germany! Thats after a week at the shop already.
Snow is coming to Colorado today anyway.
