Has anyone else noticed the convenient jump start battery connections on the newer (2004) Oilheads? It is visible just under the front edge of the seat. I wanted to add one of these connections to my R1100RT and have now done so. Here are the part numbers for anyone who wants to add one to their bike. Total parts cost is about $19.00

61 21 7 671 334 (Angle Piece)
61 13 7 672 395 (Protect. Cap)
61 13 7 671 354 (Connector)

There is also a new Ground Connector on the rear of the left head on the newer bikes but the older bikes do not have this raised casting with the tapped hole. I figure a good ground connection is not as difficult to find as the positive connection.

This is for the positive side, Mick?

Thanks. Now this might be a dumb question, but I will ask anyway. Can these connections be used for giving as well as receiving?

Dave,
Yep, hides under the front seat with a snazzy little rubber cover over it.

Brad,
Yep, giver and/or receiver. :brow

Here's the positive terminal with the cover on (if I can get the attachment to work!).

Hmm...not working. It's a 26.6K jpeg file, and it does appear in my uploaded images in my UserCP. I did get an Upload Error message and an "Attachment in Progress" message has lasted for at least 15 minutes. :dunno

I learned the hard way that I could use that + pole and had it put on last spring. I'm trying to remember the story . . They came on the GS's or they appeared on the later 04's or both. In any case, my 04 RT didn't come with the terminal.

I'm told the ground of the jumper cable can simply be clipped on to the cylinder head fins for easy access. I hope, I haven't had to jump start the bike since it was installed.

OK,
I got off my butt and pulled my seat off. Here is all you see once it's installed.

Here's one with the cover off showing the actual connector. BTW, the red wire provides power to my cycle alarm (giving, as Ben said). The ground wire to the alarm is attached to a neutral frame bolt.

Finally, here's the neutral/ground connector. As noted by others, any good frame ground should be adequate, just like when jump-starting a four-wheeler.

I've though about this kit for some time. It's approx $60.00 (expensive). It installs like a powerlet connector.

Chris,
I slipped a length of heat-shrink tubing over the exposed metal bracket so it can't be inadvertantly shorted to ground(that is why mine appears black). I dont' know why they didn't do that for ALL the brackets. Even dipping it in Plasti-Kote would be better than bare. I predict they will change that in the future. :stick

It definetly wasn't on the early model '04s. If you notice, the tupperware
bolts are now stainless and torx (except those on the belly pan).
