I need tires and am now thinking about Metzler Sportec M3 vs. Road Pilots for my R1150R.

Any objective......or even somewhat biased advice?

I have not used the Metzler Sportec M3 but I've had good luck with the Road Pilot II ..:thumb

I admit I am hard on tires, I toasted 5 sets last year. Probably due to running the twisty back road stuff and track days as much as I can, and I generally run them trying to keep the RPMs on the north side of 4K. I don't brake that much, rather I rely on compression braking which is 100% rear tire. That said, fronts are usually toast when the rear are too!

I have NEVER gotten over 3k on a rear tire. I do run high performance rubber on the street, I may not need it, but I do get some confidence in knowing the traction should be there if I ever NEED it, kind of like ABS, nice to know it is there.

Here is my recent history

Metzeler M's3 5 track days and 22-2500 miles- Still my favorite tire
Bridgestone BT-016 (triple compound) 1 track day and 1700 miles- Quicker side to side and for track days, but wear too fast for street
Dunlop D-218's no track days and 1800 miles
Metzeler M1's 3 track days and 1800 miles
Pirelli Diablo 3 -4 track days 2000 miles
Dunlop Sportmax Qualifer- no track days 1800 miles
Metzeler Corsa-3 (dual compound) no track days 1100 miles- OUCH!! only 1100 miles!!

I picked up a pair of PP-2's for this year

I am going to try the Pilot Road 2's this year as well., I bought a 2nd set of rims for track days,

Thanks - that helps - just got my 1150 in 2009 and went through a pr of new tires in 4k. Was a bit worried about that but they were soft so I guess that is about right.

I do not ride that hard and have gotten 16,000 on a rear Road Pilot 2
